Texas Monthly kicked off Cotton
Mather’s “Songs From The I Ching” project on Nov. 16th, 2015.
Read about it here.
Iconic Spoon front man, Britt Daniel once said of Cotton Mather’s
1997 landmark album Kontiki that, “It gave me something to shoot
for.” In addition to praise from musicians, the record was especially
loved by the UK press, with both Uncut and The Guardian awarding
it five-star ratings.
To celebrate the instantly memorable
pop songs that made (and make) Kontiki influential – a two-disc
reissue released in 2012 received
similar praise all over again – Cotton Mather will perform the album in its entirety in Austin on Nov. 25th.
Tickets
are available now. The event will also celebrate the run of iconic local
venue Threadgill’s, which has announced that it will likely close in
2018.
In addition
to performing Kontiki, Cotton
Mather will also do a set of songs from the band’s eponymous “Songs From
The I Ching” project that evening.
The project was launched in 2015 with a
feature in Texas Monthly in
which Cotton Mather leader Robert Harrison explained his possibly
impossible endeavor to write and record 64 songs for each hexagram of the I
Ching, which Harrison describes as “an extraordinary book about ordinary
life.”
“Songs From The I Ching” is now 35 songs
along. Two full-length albums and two EPs have been commercially released (along
with fan-friendly
alt-mixes and demos) to much acclaim, and now Cotton Mather is pleased to announce a tentative release date of
early 2018 for Native Son, the third full-length in the “Songs From The I
Ching” series.
In conjunction
with the writing and recording of Native
Son, Cotton Mather has launched a PledgeMusic
campaign – naturally appropriating their “Songs From The I Ching”
tune “The Cotton
Mather Pledge” as a
theme song – and is offering pre-orders of all kinds. Visit the Cotton
Mather PledgeMusic campaign here.
Kontiki ultra-fans that already
have tickets in hand for the upcoming Threadgill’s performance will be thrilled
to see items such as original Kontiki
session notebooks, and even multi-track ADAT tapes of the sessions available in
exchange for a donation.
The “Young Life” E.P., the
latest release by Cotton Mather, was released on Oct. 13th, and contains six tracks comprising another
portion of the 64-track “Songs From The I Ching” project that also
includes the 11-song Death of The Cool album (released July
19th, 2016), the three-track “Cotton Mather with Nicole Atkins EP”
(released December 30th, 2016), and the 11-song Wild Kingdom album (released April 7th, 2017), along with
additional one-off, online-only songs released “in real time and real weather.”
Native
Son, the project’s next full-length album release, is scheduled for
release in early 2018.
