About | “My Place”

“Looking like they’re L-I-V-I-N at an Ikea no doubt took oodles of clever camerawork and a lot of effort outrunning suspicious store employees. We can’t imagine the Brooklyn quintet broke a sweat, though. The conservatory-trained instrumentalists who created the scruffy and lived-in groove underlying “My Place” can handle a little retail incognito.” – BTRtoday

“It was two intensely fun (and awkward) days of guerrilla-style shooting in various Ikea display rooms and while I didn’t originally write the song with the Swedish chain in mind, there’s no unlinking the two now.” – Alden Harris-McCoy, The Rad Trads

The Rad Trads | In The Press

“Genre-defying, entertaining-for-everyone live performances.” — MAGNET

“Their second album, On Tap, is catchy, old school, and very New York at its heart. They will draw you in — unless you’re looking for more droll post-irony dreck, black-hole density production, or sour/dour/sky-is-falling-on JUST-ME angst. Guess these guys never got those memos. They must have been too busy just playing music and having fun.” — Paul Cavalconte, WFUV 90.7FM

“Their live performances can turn into a Saturday night church meeting, fueled by the fact that all five of them can sing. They got their start as a New Orleans cover band, which has clearly worked in their favor. You’re gonna love these guys.” — Rick McNulty, KUTX 98.9 (Austin)

The Rad Trads perform music that’s a confluence of excellent musicianship, deft writing and one wicked sense of humor. This is music for the unlucky in love and recalls the legendary NRBQ at its most comically romantic and Lake Street Dive at its most self-effacing.” — PopMatters

“The Rad Trads mix punk rock energy, horn drenched soul and jazz precision into their signature celebratory mood.” — BTRtoday

The Rad Trads | About

The gentlemen comprising the Brooklyn-based five-piece The Rad Trads distinguish themselves in ways few bands can. Already drawing lines around the block at home, the globe-trotting group’s singular take on rock n roll mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and jazz precision, all with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. It’s a sound and show that is gaining steam world over as The Rad Trads continue to tour in support of On Tap, out now from Hornblow Recordings. Listen to On Tap here.

Challenging but humorous, at times The Rad Trads bring to mind Springsteen and his “Big Man” Clarence Clemons, Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks-era vocal style, and Wilco’s epic guitar breakdowns. All of this sonic goodness is only upstaged by the fact that the guys in The Rad Trads manage to exist as five distinct songwriters and singers in a band that still sounds powerfully egoless, familial, and cohesive. And none of them even planned on being vocalists!

On Tap by The Rad Trads is out now from Hornblow Recordings. Members of The Rad Trads are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“You Walk Alone” is the third single taken from the debut self-titled album by BVRTH, out now. Featuring vocals by The Nurse (Sarah Koteles), she is also the co-writer, co-producer, and engineer behind the track.

BVRTH’s Derek Virta says, “This collaboration is years in the making. Sarah and I lived in Chicago and were introduced when I was touring with Dreamend.  She was into dance music, something I didn't know anything about, but she made me a mix tape that I loved, and we stayed in touch. All of the layering and patterns, are created from scratch, and at the time I wrote this, I was feeling a Battles / Adult vibe.”

About – BVRTH

While living in Italy in his late 20’s, Derek Virta of BVRTH wasn’t playing or listening to any music, he was just riding his bike all over Tuscany. By the time he moved back to Chicago six months later, he was an amateur bike racer, later winning three Minnesota (he is now based in St. Paul) state championships.

Virta refers to BVRTH music as “psych sludge,” which is not a total misnomer, but is likely overly influenced by Virta’s history playing in Graveface Records “house band” Dreamend and touring with Black Moth Super Rainbow. In actuality, Virta’s music takes that rich goo of a sound and bathes it in precise production values that make it not just rich, but wealthy.

Virta also counts Aphex Twin, Grails, Air, Stereolab, Suicide, and Low as influences on BVRTH.

The music on Virta’s self-titled debut BVRTH album (out today) is immediately impressive, especially for a guy who only jumped back into writing and recording in late 2018, handling all of the guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and programming himself.
Growing up, Virta discovered Fugazi, Bad Brains, and Unwound in high school, and also found himself getting into jazz at the same time. His love of hip-hop can be heard on BVRTH, too, especially on the single, “Warden,” inspired by Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, and Digital Underground.

“I was pretty much a sponge,” he says.

Everything Virta soaked up gets wrung out on the eight-track BVRTH album, contributing to the instantly familiar, but intensely layered, quality of these tracks. BVRTH is the self-titled debut album by BVRTH aka Derek Virta, out via the musician’s Virtageaux Records label today.

Virta is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

More about Oliver Kennan

“Some people have an internal monologue,” explains NYC-based bandleader, Oliver Kennan, “I have an internal jukebox and I want to show people what it sounds like.”

‘The One’ is about that state of infatuation when you just can’t get someone off your mind,” Kennan says of the latest single and music video from his upcoming debut album Oh Boy (May 10th, Hornblow Recordings). “It can be like a sweet kind of torture that you create but can’t escape. I think it’s a feeling that almost everyone can relate to and writing the song was like creating a place outside of myself where I could put those emotions. Writing ‘The One’ allowed me to finally take a big batch of songs that seemed so different and view all those stories through the same lens.”

Of the music video for the song, premiered this week via music discovery website Groundsounds, Kennan explains, “This music video is actually a smaller piece of a short film that we made called ‘I Hate You, Please Come Back’. The film was about the about the same breakup which the song was written about, so we ended up also cutting a studio edit. We tracked all the parts of this song to tape in one day. We really wanted to capture the specifics and the fun of the session."

Beneath Kennan’s youthful appearance lies an old soul. The internal jukebox he speaks of is stocked with classic 45s from the golden age of soul and funk. It’s the vintage kind, where you can see the inner workings behind the glowing glass dropping your current bop into play. On Oh Boy, Kennan is spinning bits and pieces of those records into something entirely his own.

The jukebox is stocked with modern hits, too: Kennan’s stated influences range from Otis Redding to Arcade Fire, Dr. John to Radiohead, and Wilson Pickett to Amy Winehouse. Kennan’s vocals, songwriting, and guitar playing skills honor all of his heroes, classic and contemporary, but his greatest talent may be in leading his band. The ensemble is comprised of accomplished performers in their own right, and together they are one of the city’s most exciting soul ensembles.

“I want people to feel like they’re reading my journal on the dance floor at my party.” Oh Boy by Oliver Kennan arrives May 10th via Hornblow Recordings. Oliver Kennan is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Songwriter Ryan Thompson draws influence from Johnny Cash to Wilco on country-inflected “Waiting On A Ghost” debut, out May 24th.

“We are strong, but delicate. We are wolves with a conscience. We are Delicate Hounds,” says Sacramento-based artist of album’s heartfelt performances.

“This song was written, composed and recorded in a closet in my mother-in-law’s house in Mexico,” says Ryan Thompson about Waiting On A Ghost’s title track. “A man is sitting alone in an empty house. He’s talked himself into the fact that his significant other is coming back. But he knows it won’t happen. However, he keeps waiting because he doesn’t want to give up hope. He knows he’s just waiting on a ghost.”

Waiting On A Ghost by Ryan Thompson & The Delicate Hounds was produced by Max Hart (The War on Drugs, We Are Scientists)

Ryan Thompson has been a visual artist, poet, husband, father, businessman, alt-rocker, and singer-songwriter. It took a lot of living to find his voice, and now Thompson is finally set to release his debut album of songs about that life (and maybe about your life, too.)

Waiting on a Ghost by Ryan Thompson & The Delicate Hounds arrives on May 24th. The album is comprised of Country-influenced songs about feelings and events that we’ve all experienced. Songs that resonate lyrically, but also melodically.

“Even the sad songs need hooks!,” Thompson jokes with the bit of truth that all good humor has. These essentials get taken home on the album by the pro-style of session players on drums, pedal steel, and keyboards. Full-of-heart female backing vocals merge beautifully with the swells, bends and layers of a Hammond B-3. Thompson named this band to represent these sounds that they made together: “We are strong, but delicate. We are wolves with a conscience. We are Delicate Hounds.”

“I did not spend my twenties on the music scene, trying to make a name for myself,” Thompson explains of his origins. “From the age of 21, I focused solely on my family and building my business career to support us. I always loved everything about making music, but it just wasn’t in the cards during these years.”

The Sacramento-based musician finally found sound in his 30’s, though he had yet to discover himself.

“I started what was basically a 90’s, alternative band with some lifelong friends,” Thompson remembers. “It’s kind of weird, but I wrote most of our songs on the bass guitar, and even though the songs were not great, and we were definitely not good, after a couple years practicing and writing, we put together some pretty catchy tunes.”

As so many bands assembled “just for fun” will do, Thompson’s went away. It was at this time that the burgeoning Americana genre began to take hold, drawing Thompson to artists such as The Avett Brothers, Drive-By Truckers, and Justin Townes Earle. Coincidentally, Thompson had just moved from playing bass to playing guitar at this time, though he had yet to start focusing on writing again.

The change happened when another friend, in need of an acoustic guitarist for his new country band, approached Thompson about joining them.

“It was fun because the crowds were always into it and could sing along and dance,” Thompson says. “I enjoy that type of energy and I also love the formula for country songs. So, I started writing songs on the side. The most popular was called ‘Poppin’ Pills and Sweatin’, which I wrote based on a discussion about how Johnny Cash must have felt when he was flying while all hopped up on pills. The crowd always loved this song, and after I started to write more and more, I decided to leave the band and focus on my own sound.”

Thompson began writing country-influenced songs with a little more depth to them than “Poppin’ Pills and Sweatin,” and soon another fortuitous friendship saw him forming a new band, Million Dollar Giveaway, which released two EPs, toured throughout California, and provided the proving ground for the songs that later became Waiting on a Ghost.

“The making of this album started in Mexico,” Thompson says of the trip he took there with his former Million Dollar Giveaway bandmate. The two were accompanied by a laptop, microphone, keyboard, a ukulele, an old guitar, and an upright bass previously owned by Thompson’s wife’s grandfather.

“I remember sending the demo of the song ‘Waiting on a Ghost’ to my wife after we recorded it and realizing that I was on to something,” Thompson says. “A whole new sound and feel was starting to emerge.”

Inspired by the Mexico demos, Thompson knew he needed to flesh out the songs and complete an album.

“I reached out to Max Hart to see about recording the songs. He had just worked with The War on Drugs and was finishing up the We Are Scientists album. He is also the full time keyboard and guitar player in Melissa Etheridge’s band, so the fact that he was interested in taking on my project was flattering. I went to Los Angeles to record my tracks, and we continued to work on things remotely between LA and Sacramento. It truly was a collaboration. Both of our visions are represented, and I believe fulfilled, on this album.”

Waiting on a Ghost by Ryan Thompson & The Delicate Hounds arrives on May 24th, preceded by the singles “Stop,” “Dreamin’ and Wishin,’” and “The Gift.” Ryan Thompson is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

"I've known about the brilliant balloon artist, Addi Somekh for some time. It was almost too perfect: The marriage between the twisty intricate keyboard lines of ‘Infantile’ and the complex balloon inventions. The song is about throwing adult tantrums so it just seemed natural to get dressed up in balloon outfits and frolic in the controlled chaos.” – Alex Lilly

“Gorgeously performed on acoustic piano, this stripped down performance is a lilting and sadly lovely ode to lost love,” says Parade Magazine in its premiere coverage of the acoustic version of “Firefly” by Alex Lilly. The original version of the tune closes out Lilly’s debut album 2% Milk, out now.

“This version of ‘Firefly’ is solo piano and vocal with ambiance! I added a glock and a couple of moody elements. If there’s ever a piano at a venue, ‘Firefly’ is my go-to, so it made sense to record it.” – Alex Lilly

Alex Lilly – About

Los Angeles-based artist Alex Lilly is a renaissance female.

In addition to the writing, arranging, producing, and playing of her own music, Lilly has established a notable career out on the road as a part of the touring bands of such esteemed musicians Beck, Lorde, Ry Cooder, and the bird and the bee. When Lilly’s in L.A, she has stayed busy throughout the years with her own projects such as Obi Best, The Living Sisters, Touché, and Zero DeZire.

Now Lilly has brought all of her talents, ideas, and her singular voice to the table in the form of 2% Milk, her debut full-length album, out now via newly-formed Release Me Records.

Lilly’s songs – she describes her sound as “sexy psychological thriller” – are synthy, syrupy, and suspicious i.e. there’s something going on here that’s not only pop, but actually pops. The intrigue that abounds on 2% Milk moves the listener beyond toe-tapping and finger-snapping, straight to brain-mapping.

2% Milk, the debut album from Alex Lilly, is out now. Alex Lilly is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
