“A unique place
of soul, shimmy, and shake.” — Elmore
Magazine
Denton, Texas is the home of Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers, introduced as the “fabulous Cicada Killers” on “Cicada Sweat,” the James
Brown-inspired opening track of Shook, the north Texas band’s
new album, which follows-up its 2017 debut Faded & Frayed.
The pronouncement is the only vocal on the song, an
improvisational moment that the band loved and kept, but it’s all that’s
needed: The Cicada Killers’ unique
brand of soul, shimmy, and shake speaks for itself.
The press has spoken as well: “Filled with an echoing
Southern sway and groove-infused melodies. The band deftly melds brash electric
guitar, bursts of sax and bouts of country-rock movements into a cohesive
musical point of view. As unique as it is infectious,” says music discovery
website The Southern Sounding in its
premiere
coverage of the band’s music video for single “Borrowed Repertoire”. Watch
it here.
“‘Borrowed Repertoire’
is our tongue-in-cheek, fiery commentary on the industry tending to promote
image over artistry, and how it’s always a struggle to remain authentic,” Welch and bandmate Kelly Evans explain of the tune.
The video for “Borrowed Repertoire”
is a sequel of sorts to the band’s previous “Shoenapper”
clip, and was shot at the (some say haunted) Campus Theatre in Denton, Texas. The band took a few hits to make
this! The “One Ton” cardboard weight in the clip hit band leader Chris Welch in the face instead of just
dropping on his head and guitarist Patrick
Newkirk took a spill during one of the chase scenes (it’s still in the
video) that may require a hip replacement. He suggests not running on carpet in
Doc Martens!
Welch’s influences aren’t rooted only in Otis Redding, he also brings plenty of Alex Chilton, and even The Replacements song’ “Alex Chilton” to the party, fronting
an indie-rock rave-up sound with the lived-in voice of a guy who went to
one-too-many parties. Additional influences on the band include the Stax and Hitsville label rosters, along with Kris Kristofferson, Lou Reed,
and Afghan Whigs.
Unlike the band’s debut album, The Cicada Killers approached the songwriting on Shook
as a fully collaborative effort, recording in a marathon five-day session in
early 2018 at Cool Devices Studio
with Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan of legendary pop-punk band The Marked Men.
Shook by Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers is
