More about “Queercore: How To Punk A Revolution”

What happens when the community you need is not the community you have?

Tell yourself it exists over and over, make fan zines that fabricate hordes of queer punk revolutionaries, create subversive movies, and distribute those movies widely–and slowly, the community you’ve fabricated might become a real and radical heartbeat that spreads internationally. This is the story that “Queercore: How To Punk A Revolution” tells, from the start of a pseudo-movement in the mid-1980s, intended to punk the punk scene, to the widespread rise of artists who used radical queer identity to push back equally against gay assimilation and homophobic punk culture.

Interviewees discuss homophobia, gender, feminism, AIDS, assimilation, sex, and, of course, art. The extensive participant list includes Bruce LaBruce, G.B. Jones, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, John Waters, Justin Vivian Bond, Lynn Breedlove, Silas Howard, Pansy Division, Penny Arcade, Kathleen Hanna, Kim Gordon, Deke Elash, Tom Jennings, Team Dresch, and many more.

Underscoring the interviews are clips from movies, zines, concerts, and actions iconic to the movement. As steeped in the radical queer, anti-capitalist, DIY, and give-no-fucks approach as queercore itself, the movie reveals the perspectives and experiences of bands, moviemakers, writers, and other outsiders, taking audiences inside the creation of the community–and art–so desperately needed by the same queers it encompassed.

“Queercore: How To Punk A Revolution” starts a nationwide theatrical run on Sept. 23rd in Brooklyn, NY. Director Yony Leyser is available for interviews and appearances in conjunction with screenings. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Married Bakersfield, California-based duo Fawns of Love (Jenny and Joseph Andreotti) will issue their recently aired session for the Los Angeles-based “Part Time Punks” radio show as a limited edition 12-inch vinyl (already sold out in pre-orders!) and digital release on August 24th, 2018. Also included will be a cover of the song “Rocket Science” by one of the Andreotti’s favorite bands, The Chills.

Hear the Fawns of Love take on “Rocket Science” by The Chills at MAGNET now!

Being such a huge fan of The Chills comes from this belief that they have one of the most eclectic and exciting back catalogs, and are also making contemporary music that is not only amazing but socially and politically significant as well,” Jenny says.

Fawns of Love chose to cover “Rocket Science” for a couple of specific reasons. As Jenny explains, “We would have been thrilled to cover any of The Chills’ songs from any part of their catalog, but we decided on ‘Rocket Science’ because the lyrical message of the danger of political complacency is powerful, and we were excited by the possibility of taking one of The Chills more aggressive songs and filtering it through our sound.”

Listen to a ten-song collection of Fawns of Love’s favorite cover songs at Spotify.

Describing the “Part Time Punks” session that is documented in this release, Joseph says, “The six songs included are also alternate versions of the songs that appeared on the original releases. We edited them to be more minimal, we re-programmed drum beats, and we included a few new instruments and melodies.”

Both full-time teachers, the Andreottis have been married for 13 years, performing together for 16, and recording, touring and releasing music throughout that time under various names and labels. The latest label to welcome the band is Sacramento-based Test Pattern Records, which will release the second Fawns of Love full-length in early 2019.

“We were already fans of their previous work, but when Joseph and Jenny gave us a sneak peak of a couple tracks off of their upcoming record we instantly knew that it was going to be something special,” says Test Pattern’s Ross Levine. More details about the new Fawns of Love album are forthcoming.

The latest Fawns of Love release “Part Time Punks Sessions (plus “Rocket Science”) EP, arrives on limited edition vinyl and digital on August 24th, 2018. Jenny and Joseph Andreotti are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

You think we’d know Jared Putnam by now.

Over the course of three albums, five EPs, numerous singles, and a batch of cover songs in a mere half-decade, Putnam’s mostly one-man project The March Divide has delivered a seemingly unending stream of songs that have established the San Antonio-based artist as one of the best rock songwriters working today.

Over the past couple of weeks, Putnam has continued to roll out pre-release content from Anticipation Pops (Aug. 24th, Slow Start Records), the upcoming fourth album by The March Divide, produced by Mike Major (At The Drive In, Sparta, Gone Is Gone). Hear “Spinning” now via PopMatters, and see the music video, the first in what will be a trilogy of animated clips, for “I Don’t Care” courtesy of Groundsounds.

Anticipation Pops is Putnam’s best work to date, mostly because its ten songs reveal a greater emotional depth, along with performances, and lyrics, that go beyond anything that Putnam has offered up before. Perhaps his near-manic recording and touring schedule was prologue that has led to the relatable sensitivity that is this album.

“This record feels like a new direction,” Putnam says.

Putnam claims that the work on Anticipation Pops represent a thematic “consistent inconsistency,” different from his more planned past albums. And while he dials that back when he agrees that the album is cohesive, he’s either being modest, or is far enough outside of his comfort zone now not to notice that Anticipation Pops is actually his most thematic record of all.

Writing ten personal songs from a unique perspective, but relatable to everyone, is an artistic goal most songwriters never achieve. Putnam affirms that he made Anticipation Pops by deciding, “this is what I’m doing, take it or leave it.” Apparently he didn’t know that the result would be the work his fans can care for most of all.

Anticipation Pops, the fourth full-length album by The March Divide is out August 24th, 2018, on the artist’s recently co-founded Slow Start Records label. The album’s first two singles, “I Don’t Care,” and “Spinning,” are available now, along with digital, CD and vinyl pre-orders at Bandcamp.

Lexington, Kentucky based label collective Desperate Spirits releases Empire Waste today, the debut album by mysterious disco-influenced chanteuse Jeanne Vomit-Terror. See the music video for the album’s single “Jokes Comes True” via The Big Takeover now.

‘Jokes Come True’ is a sonic chop-shop job of Detroit techno and Latin freestyle with gaudy detailing of Egyptian modes and breathy insouciance,” Vomit-Terror tells us. The message is this: absurdity is the fundamental element of this reality, and if you learn to manipulate it like rolling mercury in your hands, you can score some real points in causality (and reverse causality).”

Though sparse, Vomit-Terror’s discography is eclectic, encompassing electro-pop (“Mirror School,” which boasts a suitably trashy Robert Beatty music video), Italo disco (“The Seat of Same,” touted by Rub N Tug and Mike Simonetti, remixed by the latter), and industrial noise (The Quixotrix Tapes).

The eight songs that comprise Empire Waste showcase Vomit-Terror’s fearless weirdness and pop ingenuity. “Jokes Come True” wheels a sleek dystopian Drexciya groove into a joyous, synthetic Gloria Estefan refrain. “Lost in Luxury” juxtaposes a soaring anthemic chorus that wouldn't be out of place on a Ke$ha B-side with turbulent analog riffage straight out of Hardcore Devo: Volume One.

Vomit-Terror rips black metal guitar solos over minimal house, climaxes a pop epic with the first straight-faced industrial rap since Pretty Hate Machine, and gives Thinking Fellers Union Local 282’s “Tell Me” the “Jellybean” Benitez treatment, all the while cooing, moaning, and growling her Dadaist screeds, exhorting (or else, demanding) the listener to “close the door on reality forever!”

Empire Waste, the debut album by Jeanne Vomit-Terror, is out today via Lexington, Kentucky-based Desperate Spirits. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
