“You Go, We’ll Stay Here” is the first single from the upcoming Br’er album City of Ice.

+++

Philadelphia-based songwriter Benjamin Schurr (recording under the name Br’er) kicks off a month-long tour today in support of City of Ice, the follow-up to Br’er’s 2007 album Of Shemales and Kissaboos. The album will be released via the Edible Onion label on November 22nd. The first single from the album “You Go, We’ll Stay Here” is now available for free download. On City of Ice, bleak industrial soundscapes, bittersweet pop songwriting, and modern classical music are combined with the refined hand of a young, but experienced songwriter.

Like a dark, electronic version of The Smiths or Bright Eyes produced by Trent Reznor, the songs on City of Ice are also similar to those artists by satisfying the listener’s need for intensely personal songs containing universal truths and accessible melodies. Focusing on topics that tend to be marginalized such as abuse, displacement, and mental illness (love and joy make appearances too), Br’er manages to still wrap it in a way that commands repeat listening.

“Since Br’er is a personal coping mechanism for me, I really want the music to reflect the lyrics appropriately and to get the right sounds by any means necessary,” says Schurr. This meant either learning an instrument simply to satisfy the need for a specific part or as Schurr states, to arrange for “musical one night stands” by recruiting players he’d meet at parties. Schurr would record them and typically never see them again. City of Ice will be released on November 22nd, 2011 by Edible Onion Records. Benjamin Schurr is available for interviews. “Undertow” is taken from the first Robert Deeble album in six years, “Heart Like Feathers.”

+++

Having performed with like-minded artists such as Sam Phillips, Low, and Pedro The Lion over the years, Seattle-based folk singer Robert Deeble is now scheduled to release Heart Like Feathers, his first album since 2006 and the latest addition to a deep discography dating back to 1994. Previously proclaimed “an arresting talent, able to gain entry to places rarely imagined by most songwriters” by Paste Magazine, Deeble’s new work is deeply informed by his time off, in which he earned a master's degree in psychology and, along with his wife, became a foster parent to a baby girl.

“I felt my personal life starting to slip,” says Deeble regarding his reasons for the time off. “I wanted to re-build who I am at home and not on the road.” On the Heart Like Feathers album, the details of the reconstruction are heard clearly on songs about life change and personal struggle such as “Undertow,” which grapples with the struggle of fidelity in a relationship. “Or infidelity depending how you view it,” elaborates Deeble. “It’s basically the movie ‘Once,’ only in gender reverse. It’s the most painfully honest I've ever had to be as a songwriter.”

Adding to Deeble’s vocals and guitar on the album is Victoria Williams (folk heroine and one of Paste Magazine’s “Top 100 Living Songwriters”) with vocals on the track “Sunflower,” Stephen Hodges (drummer with Tom Waits and Mavis Staples) on percussion, Ric Hordinski (co-founder of noted Americana band Over The Rhine) with guitar on “Eucharist” and “The Colors of Dying” and Anna Lynne Williams of ethereal dream-pop band Trespassers William with vocals on “Undertow.”

Heart Like Feathers was produced by Dylan Magierek, founder of Badman Recording Co. (My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, The Innocence Mission) and will be released on February 7th, 2012 via Deeble’s Mind Bomb Publishing label in association with Dead Letter Records. Robert Deeble is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“Bastrop (These Dark Times)” represents a fundraising effort to aid victims of the Bastrop, Texas fires.

+++

Austin’s Steven Stubblefield has released a new two-song digital single under his Starlings, TN moniker to aid the victims of the tragic fire in Bastrop, Texas.  The song “Bastrop (These Dark Times)” is being sold by donation via Bandcamp with all proceeds scheduled to go to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts.

The song is coupled with the track “Can’t Do Nothin’” from the most recent Starlings, TN album How Dark It Is Before The Dawn.  The song was written in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on the eve of Hurricane Katrina as Stubblefield awaited the fate of his home, which ultimately suffered $12,000 in damage. After the storm, Stubblefield found personal recovery in the reconstruction, spending three years helping others through his work with the humanitarian organizations Samaritan’s Purse and the American Red Cross Hurricane Recovery program.

Once Stubblefield’s instruments were replaced and his hard drives restored, he started writing and recording again, eventually relocating to Austin, Texas to revitalize his music career.  When the Bastrop fire broke out, Stubblefield took inspiration from his own experiences with Katrina to again help victims of a natural disaster.

The result is “Bastrop (These Dark Times),” a beautiful song that is sure to evoke emotion and hopefully donations to this worthy cause, as well. All proceeds from sales of the song will be donated to the American Red Cross. Steve Stubblefield is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
