“I didn’t have much more than the general idea of
depicting 'walking through time,' when I approached Jordan Rathus, an old friend whose video art I was a huge fan of,”
says songwriter David Bronson of the
video for his Cat Stevens-esque
single, “The Turns.”
Bronson considers the song a summation of his entire “The Long Lost Story” project, which
encompasses a 22-track-cycle divided into two albums, The Long Lost and Story.
“The Turns,” recorded with Lou Reed producer Godfrey Diamond, is essentially that: an overture.
Video director Rathus,
a classically trained musician herself who integrates music composition into
her work, brought in award-winning cinematographer Saro Varjabedian to shoot the clip, and that’s when Bronson says the three began to “discover
the ‘bones’ of the whole thing.”
“It started with the imagery of a river and a house –
big, thematic motifs to express the ideas of moving into, through, and out of
domesticity,” Bronson explains. “When
we found the country house where the video is set, we decided that a large
portion of it would consist of two long continuous shots. Our entire crew of seven basically lived in
that house for days. It really felt like a family, which I think comes out in
the finished piece.”
David
Bronson’s Story will be released in
the UK on January 7th. The album’s single and video for “The Turns” are out now. David
