TKTTSM (an acronym for The Kiss Tried To Smack Me pronounced “ticketism”) has posted the latest single from its self-titled debut album for download.  Called “brilliant” by music discovery website adequacy.net, “Eyeyeye” is a “dazzling, surreal, dreamy number, lyrically seemingly in line with ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,’” according to writer Jen Stratosphere.

“That might be my favorite song on the album,” says TKTTSM vocalist, Johanna Stahley. “I remember I was so deep in thought driving through Queens that I got lost and ended up in the projects. That’s when ‘Fists punching in the skyeyeyeye’ popped into my head. I brought it to Owen (O’Mahony – the other half of the Brooklyn-based duo), and we figured out the rest.”

“‘Fists punching in the sky’ was just this really strong image for us,” explains O’Mahony. “The whole song is this kind of apocalyptic last stand against the end of time.”

The band also recently released the eye-popping, stop-motion animated video for its single “Plastic Fantastic” via music discovery website diffuser.fm.  See it here: http://diffuser.fm/tkttsm-plastic-fantastic-video. The video was directed by Bushwick, Brooklyn-based filmmaker Patrick Ryan Morris.

TKTTSM doesn’t mince words in its unabashed anti-social lyrics on the track and the video lives up to that stance.  “We requested something gritty, tongue-in-cheek and offensive,” says Stahley.

To his credit in fulfilling that request, Morris created a bright, colorful world which he then takes to a very dark place. “I think it fits the nature of the song,” Morris says. “The Barbie dolls just seemed like a natural fit as they do all of these terrible things, but have the same frozen smile on their face while they do them, just like many of our enemies and even many of our leaders.”

Oakland, California’s Tara Tati aka Metal Mother has posted “Mind_Off”, an album cut from her upcoming sophomore full-length Ionika, scheduled for a Spring, 2013 release on the artist’s own Post Primal label.  Ionika is Metal Mother’s follow-up to 2011’s Bonfire Diaries which received critical praise for its futuristic tribal sounds and also for Tati’s visionary video for the album’s single “Shake”.

“I like metal but that is not my sound at all,” explained Tati in an interview with Performer Magazine for its cover story on the artist last year. Tati took the stage name as a way to exemplify the power and strength that comes with being maternal, embodying a force of nature with strength and fierceness.

Tati makes good on the sonic promise of Bonfire Diaries with the upcoming Ionika’s “Mind_Off.” It’s a sound akin to an avant-dance underworld – heavily reflective, enigmatic and textured.  The track teems with the existential vulnerability that caused listeners to take notice when Metal Mother emerged in 2011.  “Mind_Off” will be followed by the first official single from Ionika, to be released at the top of the year, and then by the album itself in the spring.

San Francisco-based fans eager to hear more new Metal Mother music can see the artist live this coming weekend on Saturday, Dec. 1^st performing at The Milk Bar (1840 Haight St.) with oOoOO and WiToWMaKeR. More info HERE.

“We play your granny’s music in a way she never heard it!” – Starlings, TN

“I wanted to write a Christmas song that was closer to what I think the holidays are for a lot of people,” says Steven Stubblefield, the man behind Austin’s Starlings, TN.  That song, “The Holidaze,” now available for download, was directly inspired by a review by journalist John Book of the current Starlings, TN album Heartache In 4/4 Time which appeared earlier in the year on Book’s blog This Is Book’s Music.

“I started writing the song about the time the review came out,” says Stubblefield.  “I remember vividly thinking that dry socks, smokes, and a bottle of whiskey would be a hell of a Christmas gift.” Taking things full circle, “The Holidaze” made its debut today on Book’s website and is reviewed here: http://www.thisisbooksmusic.com/2012/11/20/some-stuffs-my-words-inspires-starlings-tn-to-write-a-christmas-song.

“This song is set during the holidays, in and around a dysfunctional family, and you are getting to look at this family as if you’re a fly on the wall,” Stubblefield explains of the song.  “There is a lot of holiday music I can’t stand. All that happy, cheery music is like nails on a chalkboard for me.  I think for a lot of us, the holiday season is overbearing and intense, so I wanted to pen something real.”
