“Exactly
what The Cannanes needed to mark their return.” – CMJ on the “Small Batch” EP
Last month, Australian duo The Cannanes (Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil) released its first collection of new material in
over a decade. The “Small Batch” EP has now been followed-up with the release of the
appropriately titled “Small Batch
Remixes” EP. Tracks from the remix
EP have already been circulating (see below for links to popular UK producer Richie Phoe’s reworkings), and now Diffuser.fm has premiered
the Dr. Version remix of The Cannanes track “Zone” here.
Highly influenced by decades of listening to Jamaican
dub and riddims (otherwise known as ‘versions’), Dr. Version is the newest project for Explosion Robinson producer, Stephen
Hermann (Casiocore, Sukpatch.) “I use the studio as a member of the band,” Hermann says of his work. “I use
delays, effects, and analog tape saturation to mangle the sounds and push the
boundaries of the concept of a remix.”
The Cannanes will visit the US for the first time in many years to
promote the “Small Batch” releases
and to appear live at the Chickfactor 21
festival, taking place June 11th-13th at The Bell House in Brooklyn, NY. More info about the festival can be found here.
The Cannanes have been releasing modest, ramshackle records since forming in Sydney, Australia almost 30 years ago. Though essentially underground, the band has amassed a legion of fans in that time, including Kurt Cobain, who, it was later discovered, name-checked The Cannanes as a personal favorite in his posthumously published journals.
