Austin-based band Boy
+ Kite has premiered “Right Above
Me,” the latest track from its new “We
Can Go Anywhere We Want” EP (recorded by Nada Surf keyboardist Louie
Lino), out now. The track is a “Song of The
Day” at Austin’s NPR-affiliate, KUTX.
Additionally, the in-studio video for the song is now
streaming via Beats Per Minute.
Boy + Kite will play a record release show in Austin at Holy Mountain on May 16th,
preceded by several additional local performances, including an opening slot
with What Made Milwaukee Famous at
the Parish Underground on May 2nd.
“This song was written on a plane flying from Seattle
to Austin,” says Boy + Kite’s Darvin Jones about “Right Above Me.” “Seattle at dusk was quite beautiful with the sun
setting over the Puget Sound, the low hum of the plane, and the dim lights. I
started having this dream of a girl and boy who just couldn’t connect and the
boy flying right above her, just out of reach. I think subconsciously it’s
about a relationship I had in the Northwest. I was often very unreachable.”
For the “Right
Above Me” in-studio video, the band wanted to capture some behind the
scenes footage while recording the new EP. “I really like the style and
atmosphere of this video – it’s not your typical gimmicky video, and were not
that typical band either.”
“Take Sonic
Youth’s dynamic shifts and sexy sensibility. Add what could be said to approach a fetish:
Electric axes digging hard into blues-based riffs, then throw in some Pixies/Cure love,” said My Old
Kentucky Blog about Go Fly, Boy + Kite’s debut album. The
dueling musical personalities of vocalist/guitarist Beth Puorro and the aforementioned Jones do indeed remind of the Gordon
/ Moore and Deal / Francis dynamic,
a tried and true formula that works once again within Boy + Kite.
