“I had been writing new music during Saxon Shore’s hiatus, with no idea as to where the songs would end up,” says Matthew Warn of Midnight Faces.  Barely into his teens, Warn began making music with childhood friend Jonny Pierce (of The Drums), resulting in a full-length album released by Columbia Records.  At age twenty, Warn went on to co-found post-rock instrumental giants Saxon Shore with Josh Tillman (of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty), releasing three EPs, and two albums produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips.)

With Saxon Shore on hiatus, towards the end of 2012, Warn asked future Midnight Faces bandmate Philip Stancil to take a shot at adding vocals to a couple of his new tunes.  “That’s when things started to fall into place,” Warn explains. “Our influences seemed so different, but that’s what makes us unique. It’s like Tom Petty fronting The Cure.”

The DC-based duo’s debut single “Feel This Way” made its premiere recently via music discovery website Baeble Music, and the Certain Creatures remix of the song has now premiered via Earmilk.  “I connected with ‘Feel This Way’ because of the dark, struggling heart being poured out in the lyrics,” says Oliver Chapoy, the man behind Certain Creatures.  “I thought it would be interesting to take the song into a darker, frigid, sonic landscape.”

Midnight Faces recently completed its debut full-length album Fornication in Los Angeles with producer Jason Martin (The Drums, Cold War Kids, Starflyer 59) and will tour the US, Asia and Europe with a full band upon the release of the record this summer.  Fornication is scheduled for release on June 18th, 2013.

“Should be called Picture Perfect.” – Roctober

“One of Us” is the latest single from the St. Louis-based band’s new EP “Every Day Is Picture Day,” and is available for download now via Beats Per Minute and streaming via Groove Loves Melody.

‘One of Us’ was inspired by the desire to play something with an honest-to-God riff,” says Picture Day band leader, Brian Wiegert. “We’re not often a heavy band, but it’s definitely part of our musical DNA.”  Wiegert, a fan of Black Sabbath and Metallica, is also a fan of Ween, and explains that, “While we couldn’t get away with jumping stylistically all over the map like Ween, we reserve the right to be a product of our combined influences.”

“I can’t front like Robert Pollard hasn’t been a huge inspiration to me, as well,” Wiegert continues. Speaking about the band’s tune “Madoline,” previously featured by MAGNET, Spinner, and KDHX, St. Louis, he explains, “It’s us consciously trying to do something upbeat. The chorus is inspired by Del Shannon and Frankie Valli, except with Brian May-style layered guitars.” The catchy, to-the-point tunes on “Every Day Is Picture Day,” show off the combination of chops and sense of humor that defines this band.

Influenced by confirmed rock legends such as The Who, Bowie and the previously mentioned Guided By Voices, Picture Day also embraces the unexpected by participating in Ween tribute nights, fostering a hip-hop side project with three album releases to date under the name MLD, and performing with self-described ragtime entertainer, Pokey LaFarge (a St. Louis sensation who appears on Jack White’s Blunderbuss.)

“It occurred to me some years ago, that music is the one thing that no one is forcing me to do,” says Wiegert. “I punch a clock, and when I’m done, I drag my ass to band practice because I want to hear some loud guitars.”  Picture Day’s latest EP “Every Day Is Picture Day” arrives on April 16th, 2013. The single “Madoline” is streaming now. Members of Picture Day are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“When I wrote this song,” Linda Draper reflects on her new single “Hollow,” “I was thinking back to a conversation I overheard on a plane. The woman was talking about her step-son not being committed to any ‘real’ career, and that all he wanted to do was write. She said that he better ‘get it out of his system.’ As I heard this, I thought about another of my inspirations for this song, Nick Drake, and what a dull world this would be if he had been told this and listened.”

“Hollow” will appear on Draper’s upcoming new album Edgewise, scheduled for release on May 21st, 2013.  The album arrives on the heels of a half-dozen Draper albums released throughout the years, including four LPs recorded with legendary cult-icon and music producer Kramer (Ween, Low, Galaxie 500.)  A video for “Hollow,” shot on the beaches of Montauk on Long Island, New York, is currently in production.

“With this album, I feel myself returning to the roots that originally sparked my enthusiasm for music,” Draper explains, referring to her childhood growing up in a musical household with parents and siblings who are all musicians (father Frederick Draper is a classical guitar virtuoso who studied with Andres Segovia.)

Draper gives a peek into the making of Edgewise via a video interview here.  The album is scheduled for release on May 21st, 2013, and its first single “Hollow” is streaming now.  Linda Draper is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
