J Hacha De Zola, Icaro Nouveau, and “Reductive Synthesis”

“This is an ‘Urban Junkyard’ record.”

It’s a descriptor that J Hacha De Zola has been casually using over the course of three album releases. With the new full–length Icaro Nouveau (out now), the Jersey City–based musician defines the genre in detail.

Produced by iconic engineer John Agnello, a career–long cohort of another “J” – J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr – and more recently the man behind albums by Waxahatchee, the new Hacha De Zola songs are described by the artist as full of “villains, spells, desires, romance, danger, redemption, and revelations.”

“The way I go about making an ‘Urban Junkyard’ record is through my ‘Reductive Synthesis’ method,” Hacha De Zola explains of his approach to record-making. “I’ll borrow structures from existing musical forms, break ‘em up, and then recombine them. I’ll sit in the producer’s chair next to a master producer like John Agnello and then bring in my cabal of musical associates. I honestly let the session players play whatever they want over these structures and just have ‘em all throw the kitchen sink at it. I am an
enabler!”

J Hacha De Zola’s fourth full-length album Icaro Nouveau is out now. The artist’s current EP ‘Syn Illusión,’ a four-song, 80s-era synth-driven, all-Spanish language release, is also available now.

Hacha de Zola is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“This song came out very different than I thought it would. When I play it by myself, it sounds like a stoner folk song about a dude that doesn’t like his job. In its final version, I feel like it came out as a prog folk song where Sunny Day Real Estate meets Pink Floyd.” Listen to “I Got Lost” by The March Divide at Northern Transmissions or at the link below. The song is taken from the latest release in The March Divide’s “Distractions” series of singles.

The songwriting and performing career of San Antonio-based artist Jared Putnam aka The March Divide continues to wind and weave its way along the highways of America. Putnam is invading the hearts and minds of new fans every day as he continues a seemingly endless tour, with over 50 dates already played and confirmed in 2019, and more on the way.

See below for The March Divide’s current itinerary.

Putnam is a prolific songwriter, and has developed his style in public by releasing material at a non-stop pace. A deeper, more personal, and risk-taking approach to his lyrics took hold with Putnam’s most recent full-length, 2018’s Anticipation Pops, and continues with the “Distractions” series of singles that is now up to its third volume as of last Friday. The three-song “Distractions: Vol. 3” contains the Sunny Day Real Estate meets Pink Floyd tune “I Got Lost,” which can be heard here.

“‘Distractions’ is something I came up with as a way to continue to release the music I’m working on, between albums,” Putnam explains. “The name refers to the fact that when I’m writing and recording these songs, it’s usually a distraction from the things that I feel like I should be doing, like the business part of what I do. But at the end of the day, writing and recording is all I ever want to do anyway.”

Showing audiences more and more of what he’s about has helped The March Divide build a loyal following in the markets that Putnam frequently visits, and he’s not only a good showman on stage, he takes the time in-between songs and after the gig to connect with fans. It’s a personal touch that’s keeping him in business.

It’s Putnam’s affable way of grinding it out and hustling that has allowed him to do the thing most touring songwriters are unable to do, which is to keep on doing it at all. His growing fanbase funds the tour and their belief and appreciation of Putnam’s work has pushed him to his best songwriting to date.

The new three-song single “Distractions Vol. 3” by The March Divide is out now. “Distractions Vol. 2,” “Distractions Vol. 1,” and Anticipation Pops, the fourth full-length album by The March Divide, are also all available now via Slow Start Records. “Distractions Vol. 4” is in the works. Look for Jared Putnam out on the road throughout 2019.

“A unique place of soul, shimmy, and shake.” —  Elmore Magazine

Denton, Texas is the home of Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers, introduced as the “fabulous Cicada Killers” on “Cicada Sweat,” the James Brown-inspired opening track of Shook, the north Texas band’s new album, which follows-up its 2017 debut Faded & Frayed.

The pronouncement is the only vocal on the song, an improvisational moment that the band loved and kept, but it’s all that’s needed: The Cicada Killers’ unique brand of soul, shimmy, and shake speaks for itself.

The press has spoken as well: “Filled with an echoing Southern sway and groove-infused melodies. The band deftly melds brash electric guitar, bursts of sax and bouts of country-rock movements into a cohesive musical point of view. As unique as it is infectious,” says music discovery website The Southern Sounding in its premiere coverage of the band’s music video for single “Borrowed Repertoire”. Watch it here.

“‘Borrowed Repertoire’ is our tongue-in-cheek, fiery commentary on the industry tending to promote image over artistry, and how it’s always a struggle to remain authentic,” Welch and bandmate Kelly Evans explain of the tune.

The video for “Borrowed Repertoire” is a sequel of sorts to the band’s previous “Shoenapper” clip, and was shot at the (some say haunted) Campus Theatre in Denton, Texas. The band took a few hits to make this! The “One Ton” cardboard weight in the clip hit band leader Chris Welch in the face instead of just dropping on his head and guitarist Patrick Newkirk took a spill during one of the chase scenes (it’s still in the video) that may require a hip replacement. He suggests not running on carpet in Doc Martens!

Welch’s influences aren’t rooted only in Otis Redding, he also brings plenty of Alex Chilton, and even The Replacements song’ “Alex Chilton” to the party, fronting an indie-rock rave-up sound with the lived-in voice of a guy who went to one-too-many parties. Additional influences on the band include the Stax and Hitsville label rosters, along with Kris Kristofferson, Lou Reed, and Afghan Whigs.

Unlike the band’s debut album, The Cicada Killers approached the songwriting on Shook as a fully collaborative effort, recording in a marathon five-day session in early 2018 at Cool Devices Studio with Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan of legendary pop-punk band The Marked Men.

Shook by Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers is out now via Goliad Media Group. Chris Welch is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
