Chicago-based band Clara May charts an immigrant’s inner journey to the United States on “American Desi” concept album, out today.

“Rich and alluring... a mini-melting pot of new American music.” – Chicago Sun-Times

“I’ve never heard an Indian song that had the grandeur and toughness of an early 70’s prog-rock ballad,” says Tom Silva, the Indian-American leader of Chicago rock band, Clara May.  “‘American Desi’ is about the 20 million Indians who left India in search of a new life,” he says of the title track of the band’s new concept album, out today. “The words in English and Hindi evoke the feeling of not belonging, of being looked at by other people who define you and don’t understand where you’re from.”

American Desi, like its predecessor, explores themes surrounding identity and ethnicity, but this time from a more singular perspective.  Silva recently discussed the record with MTV Desi and its story of how, at a time when immigration has become a flashpoint topic, the album makes the issue intensely personal by following a young man from the shores of Asia to Los Angeles to Middle America on a haunting journey of border crossings, loneliness, love and ultimately triumph.

“For every Indian who has become a success overseas,” Silva explains, “There are the millions who work in low-wage jobs without an education and without legal status. We never hear their voices. These people may never see their homeland again. This is the narrative at the heart of it.”  It’s a story that may seem too heavy for a rock and roll record until you actually listen to American Desi.  The album’s sound is heavy itself in all the right ways, making an epic noise with anthemic guitars, rattling bass, booming drums and Silva’s baritone.

Combined, it conjures something as offbeat but interesting as Lou Reed fronting Led Zeppelin as heard on the American Desi track “Badlands,” which features a drum solo in the great tradition of British drummers like John Bonham and Keith Moon.  The video for the album’s title track recently premiered via Rolling Stone India.  The clip was directed by John Michael Bister, an accomplished Neuroscientist who hung up his lab coat to pursue his real passion: animation.

Silva explains, “We used archival footage, stop-motion and old-fashioned graphics to create a very tactile feel that juxtaposes Indian footage with iconic images of Mount Rushmore and the Golden Gate Bridge as a way of suggesting the immigrant journey at the heart of the song.”  Bister concurs, saying, “Once Tom suggested juxtaposing iconic American images with footage from India, the surreal, dreamlike aesthetic of the video really took off.”

Of the song’s sonics, Silva says, “I love the early 70’s British bands, but the biggest influence on this song was ‘Private Investigations’ by Dire Straits from 1982. It has a deep, brooding emptiness that is atmospheric, but also urgent. That’s why the song also has so much silence and emptiness – it’s to evoke that experience of having leaving home. That said, the swell in the second half of the song and the guitar work by Alex Gowland are meant to be defiant and convey the strength of these brave Indians.”

Midnight Faces is the L.A.-based (recently relocated from D.C.) duo comprised of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Warn née Matthew Doty (best known as co-founder of post-rock instrumental pioneers Saxon Shore with Josh Tillman of Father John Misty) and vocalist Philip Stancil.  The pair makes an epic noise on the title track from their debut album Fornication, out now.

“I wanted to paint a picture of despair, so I headed to the dark side for this song,” says Stancil of his soaring vocals on the album’s title tune, which is also the soundtrack to the band’s first music video.  Directed by Stephen Venezia and Dan Giraldo for Nimblefox Productions, the clip is set in the late 1800s, a time in early America when people were personally responsible for burying their own kin.

It is this tradition, as depicted in the video, which evoked the saying “saved by the bell.” Families would create a safety coffin in which one would attach a bell above ground and leave a string in the deceased’s hands below. If the presumed dead were to be mistakenly buried (which was common at the time) this method would ensure that the “dead” would be able to call for help.  The video for “Fornication” was shot on location Woodstock, New York in August, 2013.

Warn first began making music with childhood friend Jonny Pierce (of The Drums) when they both were barely into their teens, and later went on to co-found Saxon Shore, releasing three EPs, along with two full-length albums produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips.)

“I had been writing new music during Saxon Shore’s hiatus, with no idea as to where the songs would end up,” says Warn. He soon asked future Midnight Faces bandmate Stancil to take a shot at adding vocals to a couple of his new tunes.  “That’s when things started to fall into place,” Warn explains. “Our influences seemed so different, but that’s what makes us unique. It’s like Tom Petty fronting The Cure.”

Midnight Faces completed the Fornication album in Los Angeles with producer Jason Martin (The Drums, Cold War Kids, Starflyer 59).  The album has already received attention from music discovery sites such as MTV Buzzworthy, Earmilk, Under The Radar, My Old Kentucky Blog, Baeble Music and more.

Columbus, Ohio-based band rock band Red Wanting Blue launches its nationwide “Dime-Store Circus” tour in Des Moines, IA tonight at Vaudeville Mews.  By the end of the run in Denver at the Bluebird Theater on December 19th, the band will have been supporting its current album From The Vanishing Point for the better part of two years.  The record, which debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” chart, is the band’s best-selling album to date, and has helped see the group go from relative obscurity to sold-out shows at the House of Blues in Cleveland, Lincoln Hall in Chicago, and the Bowery Ballroom in NYC.

In that time, Red Wanting Blue also sailed on The Rock Boat cruise for the second time (in the company of Brandi Carlile, NEEDTOBREATHE and Good Old War), made its network television debut on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” appeared on VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live,” taped a session for Daytrotter, and received press attention from Rolling Stone, MTV, Paste, and more.  Late last year, Red Wanting Blue recorded a set for NPR’s heralded “Mountain Stage” program, which recently aired nationally and is now streaming via the NPR website.

Band leader Scott Terry recently spent time chatting with touring industry bible Pollstar about the band’s long journey (he founded Red Wanting Blue in the 1990’s while still in college), and dropping some details about the next Red Wanting Blue album. The upcoming, as-yet-untitled record is once again produced by Jamie Candiloro (REM, Ryan Adams) and is tentatively set to arrive in the first half of 2014. Read the in-depth interview here.

In the meantime, Red Wanting Blue will be doing what the band does best.  See below for a complete tour itinerary including dates with fellow Rock Boat-ers Will Hoge and Swear and Shake.  Scott Terry of Red Wanting Blue is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
