“It’s
vintage aesthetic is a loving homage to the classic pop of the 80s.” – Matt
Matasci, MXDWN
“‘Be Like Mike’
is an attempt to pay tribute to vintage Janet
Jackson and Michael Jackson, where
the melodies just seemed to float on air!,” says James Benjamin Thomas, one half of the new Philadelphia-based duo, Rush Week. The debut Rush Week album Feels is out today via
Madrid’s enduring indie-pop label Elefant
Records.
Producer Thomas
and vocalist Rachel K. Haines update
the Nu-disco, Soul and R&B sounds from the late 70’s / early 80’s on the
record, and combine them with the elegance and melancholy of Roxy Music and Talk Talk. Modern touchstones include St. Vincent, Étienne de
Crécy, and Justice.
“We were trying to capture an intangible feeling in a
powerful way,” says Thomas of Rush Week’s lush debut single, “Feelings,” out now. “We wanted to song to have
a current drum beat but with an early 90's R&B chord progression underneath
it that sounds familiar but still new and exciting.”
The striking single is matched by an equally striking music video,
created by director Juanma Carillo,
and premiered
this week via music discovery website
PopMatters.
Carillo explains, “Right from the start, ‘Feelings’ took me straight to American indie films from the 90s
with Gus Van Sant and Larry Clark, and also to Clark’s photography. His ‘Tulsa’ series has always been a
reference for me, but in this case I didn’t want the characters to end badly,
they’re just lost, but also in love. The song has that positive energy that
called for love and adolescence to prevail over everything else.”

“With the music influenced by a range of styles,
including soul and R&B, as well as the luxurious sounds of Roxy Music and Talk Talk or the more contemporary settings of St. Vincent or Tennis, (Rush Week’s) Haines and Thomas move
the listeners throughout this deeply emotional track.” – Jedd Beaudoin, PopMatters
