“Distractions:
Vol 1.,” the first in an ongoing series of singles releases by The March Divide,
is out today!

San Antonio-based songwriter Jared Putnam is following-up the late-2017 release of his singles
collection Five Years of The March Divide: The Singles 2013-2017 with what
is expected of this highly prolific songwriter: more songs.
Today, The
March Divide has released “Distractions:
Vol. 1,” [LISTEN]
the first in what will be an ongoing series of singles (two tracks in this
case) that represent songs that Putnam
is proud of, but that don’t quite fit into his album projects. Putnam explains it this way: “I don’t
like to call anything I actually take the time to record a ‘B-side.’ ”
The “Distractions”
series is not the only new venture for Putnam.
The single, arriving in the midst of Putnam’s
work on what will be the eventual fourth album from The March Divide in little more than half a decade (amongst five EP
releases and his popular fun run on 80’s-era cover songs), is the first release
for Slow Start Records, a new El
Paso-based record label founded by Putnam
and longtime friend, business associate, and industry veteran, Luis Mota. The label is distributed by Burnside Distribution via The Orchard.
Why start a new label now?
“We’ve both spent our lives in the music business,” Putnam says of himself and Mota. “Luis, primarily as a show promoter, tour manager, and someone who
has run venues. I’ve been putting out music for 20 years now, working with
labels and independently and touring. We have a lot of experience, and our
expectations are realistic. It’s an awkward time for record labels, but I’ve
been able to navigate that pretty well with my own releases, and I feel like we’ll
be able to do the same.”
Slow Start
Records has already signed its first
acts. Sleepspent, the El
Paso-based dreampop trio led by 21-year-old songwriter Austin North, will release its debut EP via Slow Start on May 4th.
Sorrytown, from Las Cruces,
NM, is currently wrapping up a six-week tour and will see its current catalog
distributed via Slow Start before commencing
work on new recordings for the label in the near future.
Slow Start’s hometown venue Lowbrow
Palace in El Paso will host a label-presented showcase featuring The March Divide, Sleepspent, and Sorrytown
on April 14th. Tickets are available
now. The showcase falls in the midst of a barrage of tour dates that head
deep into the summer for The March
Divide (see itinerary below), with more to be announced. As usual, Putnam will find time to hit the
studio, as well.
“I’ve been recording the new songs one at a time,
which has been great, because I can give each one the time it deserves,” Putnam says of his current process. “But
it’s also slowed me down a bit, with my always busy show schedule. I only have
one more song to go though, and I feel like this record has been a real
evolution in my writing.”
“Distractions: Vol. 1”
is the first in a series of singles releases from The March Divide and is available now. Slow Start
Records is tentatively scheduled to
release the next album by The March
Divide in the fall of 2018.
