Top 5 via YouTube
The debut album by Los Angeles-based visual artist,
producer, and vocalist Rae Okino
arrives today via traditional
consumer digital outlets, but the artist is also making the record
available for free download via her Soundcloud
account for a very limited time. The public can grab a copy of Valentine’s Day starting
today, March 23rd at 12PM PST!
Why today instead of the newly-traditional release
date of Friday?
Okino explains, saying, “It’s a full moon in Libra and I’m a Libra, and
today is a day that closes out a cycle Libra’s have been in for two years.” Okino created Valentine’s Day within
that two-year period, and goes on to say, “It’s a great day for Libra’s to
release what they’ve been doing during that time, and my desire to offer the
record for free as a gift to all of the lovers and feelers out there reflects
that.”
“Lovers and feelers” is what Valentine’s Day, the
holiday and the album, are all about, after all.
“Valentine’s Day not only touches on
love, lust, and the general ins and outs of relationships,” Okino explains, “but also on the
relationship between togetherness and separateness as a means to achieve
oneness. Show the people you love why
you love them, any chance you get. Why
wait for Hallmark to bank on your love for each other?”
“Game Changer,” the lead single from Valentine’s Day (premiered on February
14th by ear-to-the-ground music discovery site Buzzbands.la),
starts where relationships do – at the beginning. It’s about that “difficult stripping back of
the layers,” Okino says.
The track, featuring rapper Lafa Taylor (a collaborator with Bassnectar and Beats Antique),
is described by writer Kevin Bronson
as a “dreamy, synth-drenched banger,” and is just one cut that comprises an
overall effort by Okino to create
what she calls a “sex positive” album.
