“Wilderness,” the debut release from San Francisco-based trio Little Shrine, is an unexpected, classic-sounding folk record.  Unexpected, because the songs were written by Jade Shipman, best-known around the bay area as a bassist and drummer, playing in groups she describes as “rock bands with distorted guitars.”

Performing a record release show to a packed room at hometown venue The Lost Church last week, it was clear from the immediate response that Shipman is also a singer-songwriter.

The music video for “Stone,” the first single from “Wilderness,” showcases the city that Shipman calls home.

“It was our director, Justin Ramsay’s idea to start shooting the video at 5AM in order to get San Francisco’s pre-dawn light,” Shipman says. “And to also have empty streets, which allowed us to shoot in the middle of the road. It rained off and on throughout the day, but somehow that seemed appropriate and right for the song.”

Shipman continues, explaining the personal inspiration behind these songs, by saying, “This project came from something else, I guess from some tender, raw part of myself that I’ve been hiding musically. I didn’t set out to write folk songs, but I was going through some difficult life stuff and my experiences kept turning into folk songs.”

Writing music has been the way that Shipman has made sense of the world for years, but something was different this time. “The feelings were too raw to hide them in rock music,” she says of the revealing and relatable lyrics on “Wilderness.”

For a time, Shipman felt these revelations might be only for herself, too personal to actually share with the world.

“I was talking with a friend of mine,” she remembers. “He helped me realize that we never know how we will have a positive impact on someone. Making ‘Wilderness’ has been a long process of peeling away doubts and fears, but it’s part of having faith that people can gain something from hearing these songs.”

“Wilderness” by Little Shrine is out now. Jade Shipman is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
