65daysofstatic CDs Sell Out, Band Prepares To Launch Tour.

“...they have done what they've always done -- thrown the rulebook out the window and grown organically. With such clinical conviction 65DOS are utterly peerless...” -- Razio Rauf, Kerrang Magazine.

“65daysofstatic have made their masterpiece... The Destruction of Small Ideas is a weight, a tower of babel, a journey, learnings, understandings, communication, evolution.” -- Stylus Magazine.

In the first week of its release, 65daysofstatic's new album The Destruction of Small Ideas sold out the entire 10,000 discs of the first pressing, forcing its label Monotreme Records to scramble to meet the overwhelming demand. The British post-rock quartet's exponentially growing popularity in the UK, Europe and Japan is poised to spread across the U.S. with its upcoming summer 2007 tour with Fear Before the March of Flames.

This is the first stateside jaunt for the group, which normally plays for crowds of thousands overseas. 65daysofstatic made its American live debut to an enthusiastic audience at the SXSW festival this past March. The summer tour supporting its third album The Destruction of Small Ideas begins July 18th, running throughout the U.S. until August 10th. See complete dates below.

The Destruction of Small Ideas is the highly-anticipated follow-up to 65daysofstatic’s massively popular sophomore album One Time For All Time which was released in the US for the first time last fall. The three-song single “Don't Go Down To Sorrow” (MP3 | VIDEO) preceded the album on April 9th, building upon the critical and commercial success of One Time For All Time in the UK, Europe and Japan, which catapulted the band to festival stages and the pages of the NME, The Wire, Rock Sound and others since its release there in 2005.

The futuristic tone of The Destruction of Small Ideas is a refreshing gene-splice of electronic glitch and guitar girth, making for what amounts to a seductive score for an unwritten sci-fi epic, melding cutting guitars with sampled beats, live drums and glitch. Where IDM culture cuts out in the low end however, 65daysofstatic delivers a thunderous wall of guitars that's reportedly still shaking UK festival grounds since last summer's performances. The American press has begun to pick up on the band too, with forthcoming coverage in Magnet, Paste and Harp magazines.

Tooth & Nail releases unforgettable video for Neon Horse's “Cuckoo!"

For Immediate Release: Tooth & Nail releases unforgettable video for “Cuckoo!,” the first single from mystery supergroup Neon Horse’s debut album. New Starflyer59-related projects also now available from the label.

“Forgetting the fact that Neon Horse is a faceless entity at this point, the music of Neon Horse is able to be pegged. Entrenched in a nu-garage aesthetic, Neon Horse does an admirable job of mixing the macabre retro tones of Peter Murphy of Bauhaus or maybe Danzig...” – HM Magazine

Tooth & Nail Records has gone public with the video for “Cuckoo!,” from the debut album by mystery supergroup Neon Horse. In the tradition of the band's humble beginnings, the members of Neon Horse prefer to leave their identities a mystery. Now with the release of the “Cuckoo!” video, will the identities of these cloaked horses be revealed? Watch “Cuckoo!” HERE, and decide for yourself. And while you're guessing, check out two new Starflyer59-related Tooth and Nail releases from Joy Electric and The Brothers Martin.

Joy Electric’s latest Tooth & Nail release is The Otherly Opus. Says the band’s Ronnie Martin, “I’m trying to make an anti-dance electronic record. As soon as it’s an electronic thing, dance gets involved.” Aside from his work with Joy Electric, Martin has teamed up with brother, Jason, of the hit indie-guitar-pop band Starflyer59, to release The Brothers Martin. The fittingly named record contains ten flawless tracks – all potential hit singles. Unlike many collaborative albums, The Brothers Martin sound is not a hastily created amalgam of the Joy Electric and Starflyer59 aesthetics.

Says Ronnie Martin, “My main concern with the project was that I didn’t want it to be a B-sides thing.” Upon listening to The Brothers Martin, fans will concur that these two extraordinary songwriters have once again surpassed all expectations.

Kinetic Stereokids Make Kid Moves.

Kinetic Stereokids has completed recording its next full-length album, Kid Moves.

After testing out some of the new tracks at recent shows, "Have A Nice Day," and other tracks from the record have been going over absolutely fabulously. "Like Yanni in Greece," according to band front man Justin Ford.

Ford describes the record as "Big rock guitars... pants on fire... it's a tsunami of bashing drums, hitting, ducks calling, preachers screaming, sonic waves of violence... but then something hugs you so soft and pleasant that you barely notice the knife in your back... it's rich, vibrant psychosis."

Kid Moves is scheduled for a late fall release on Brooklyn-based label Overdraft Recordings. In the meantime, Kinetic Stereokids will be making summer tour stops across the U.S. in support of its debut LP Basement Kids.

The album, with its featured track "Explosions Were Heard" (MP3) is now available at Insound, iTunes and Emusic, and at retail establishments nationwide. The album also features the track "Donuts Are Here" which can be seen and heard in a live clip shot at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn (LINK). Keep an eye on the Kinetic Stereokids website (LINK) and MySpace (LINK) for updates.

J. DiMenna Exclusive Track - "A Lizard's Tongue."

"DiMenna's made a CD that's infectious. Its the kind of infectious music that took time to grab me, the kind of infectious music that I find myself singing and not realizing what it is or how it even crept into my subconscious." - Bob Boilen of NPR's "All Songs Considered"

Fanatic is proud to present an as-yet-unreleased track from J. DiMenna. "A Lizard's Tongue" (MP3) features J. along with other members of the Exotic label roster including bilingual, multi-instrumentalist jar-e and DiMenna's sister Meredith of Saint Bernadette on backing vocals. The track predates DiMenna's album Awkward Buildings, which recently spawned the digital-only live EP If He Could Speak Now (STREAM).

As Meredith DiMenna explains, "This is one of J’s oldest songs that he wrote when he and jar-e were in a band together in Asheville. J. had moved beyond it when he went in the studio to do Awkward Buildings. But I always really, really loved it and thought it was a classic song. I asked if they would record it so we could use it at some point in the future to promote both their albums. So jar-e and J. came into the Exotic studio with Keith Saunders, who produced jar-e’s record, and came up with this version. I think J. might feel like this is his version of “Cherry Pie” - like the song that’s not really like the rest of your music, but so catchy that no one will ever let you perform without asking for it!"

J. DiMenna's new six-track digital-only EP If He Could Speak Now has hit the blogosphere and the radio stations at America's institutions of higher learning. The EP features live versions of songs from DiMenna's critically acclaimed album Awkward Buildings. The video for one of Awkward Buildings' featured tracks, "Preacher," (MP3 | VIDEO), which appears in live form on If He Could Speak Now, was directed by Roland Becerra. Becerra recently won the Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film contest and screened his winning film Dear Beautiful at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

Austin’s Peel – “a bunch of jolly honkies,” according to Vice Magazine – lauches tour.

“You can’t go wrong with a bunch of jolly honkies from Austin who play tight pop songs smeared with fuzzed-out keyboards and caustic guitars. I bet they love coloring books, sharing strawberry milkshakes at the local soda fountain, and ‘being good.’ It's like Stephen Malkmus and Belle & Sebastian adopted a litter of wiry, freckle-faced redheads and, instead of receiving severe beatings for the rest of their lives, the kids were taught how to play slacker twee tunes that don't make you feel gay for listening to them.” – Vice

“Austin indie-rock revivalist act Peel is a throwback to the heady Post-Pavement days of the mid-90’s, when hundreds of small timers married affectless vocals to springy guitars and scattered sonic slop, creating a joyous din. The band’s debut album, Peel (Peek-a-Boo), would’ve been a standout then, with catchy oddities like “Oxford” and “1949” sounding simultaneously vintage and immediate. – The Onion

“Listening to Peel, a young five-piece hailing from Austin, Texas, is like taking part in a high-speed pursuit through garageland at the height of summer with the Velvet Underground and Apples In Stereo on your tail…This is exhilarating stuff which gravitates towards greatness the more you play it.” – Popmatters

Peel will set out in June on its first U.S. tour in support of its self-titled debut album. Drummer Alex Brown from the band Prom Night will be joining the band on drums for the tour. The record has had the press raving, and has been gaining the band comparisons to everyone from Pavement to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. While flattering, these comparisons have left the members of Peel scratching their heads.

With classically trained pianist Allison Moore managing multiple keyboards, country music fan Dakota Smith giving Peel its twang, and lefty-ruling-right-handed-guitarist Josh Permenter in the mix, the members of the group like to think they’ve set themselves apart.

Moore muses, “It’s really weird when people do long winded comparisons to bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, or The Islands, or most hysterically claim that my songwriting is ‘definitively influenced by Architecture in Helsinki,’“ says Moore. “I've never even listened to those bands. I have no idea what that article even means!” Moore isn’t totally out of the indie rock loop, however, as she shares a house with Jared Van Fleet from another Austin buzz band, Voxtrot. “You should see our house... it’s ridiculous,” she explains. “We're both keyboardists, and I think there's literally like 14 different organs, synthesizers, and types of keyboards and pianos in our house.”

Peel will make its way down south and back up the east coast, and will play three New York dates before returning back home to perform with The Liars and fellow Austin band The White Ghost Shivers.

Wooden Wand A.K.A. James Jackson Toth announces interview days preceding release of Ecstatic Peace debut album produced by Lee Ranaldo.

The prolific James Jackson Toth, working under the nom-de-tune Wooden Wand has released some 20-plus albums (even he has lost count, most of them cassettes and CD-Rs only) over a handful of years. However, Toth considers his forthcoming Ecstatic Peace debut James & The Quiet the third proper Wooden Wand full length. While each release has explored a psychedelic-folk wonderland, this album is far and away one of the most concisely focused and downright catchy recordings in the WW oeuvre. And, along with that, this may be the last record under the Wooden Wand moniker.

In anticipation of the album's June 12th release, Toth has announced interview days on May 29th and 30th. Members of the press are encouraged to sign up for interview time slots quickly. Thus far, press response to the album has been phenomenal, with early praise running in Spin, Alternative Press, CMJ, Uncut, Filter and many more.

Sonic Youth's spry, eternally-teenaged guitarist/vocalist Thurston Moore recently signed Wooden Wand to his Ecstatic Peace label (home of Be Your Own Pet), announcing the release date for James & The Quiet. The album was produced by SY guitarist Lee Ranaldo (who also plays some stringed things on the recording), and longtime SY drummer Steve Shelley provides his signature rhythmic strut.

When Toth told his band his plans for his new album, they all looked at him like he was crazy. Likewise, when Toth announced these peculiar ambitions to Ecstatic Peace label head Moore and label manager Andrew Kesin, they gave him a similar look – an unmistakable mix of disbelief, skepticism and fear.

“I want it to be an un-weird record,” was Toth’s plan. The road-weary songwriter had been spending a lot of time with old Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings records, and wanted to transcend the ‘psychedelic’ connotations he’d been pegged with since his days fronting Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice. He wanted to do what Elvis Costello did on Imperial Bedroom or Leonard Cohen did on I’m Your Man – he wanted to not give the people what they wanted, necessarily, but instead endeavor to follow his muse and create something altogether different.

Sure, everyone was baffled by this proclamation. How could Toth – who is to a wah-wah pedal what George Bush is to bad foreign policy – tone it down enough to make a record without any of the experimental leanings and idiosyncratic eccentricities of his previous work?

He didn’t, exactly, but he tried damn hard. “It’s just that when you get someone as brilliant as Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo to produce and co-arrange a record, it gets very hard to pass up the opportunity to see a song through to its logical end and explore every possibility,” Toth says. With the help of Jarvis Taveniere (Vanishing Voice, Meneguar), DM Seidel (Vanishing Voice), Jeremy Earl (Woods, Meneguar), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), and Ranaldo himself (who sings and plays guitar and piano on the album) Toth’s folk songs quickly became densely layered and meticulously arranged, and, soon enough, an album began to take shape.

Co-arranger and vocalist Jessica Toth may be the record’s secret weapon. While perhaps best known for her role as lead vocalist and occasional guitarist in Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice, on James & The Quiet she emerges as the perfect foil to Toth’s inimitable artistic voice. Together with Ranaldo, Jessica wrote and fine-tuned most of the album’s exquisite harmony vocals and piano lines while Toth himself sat in the studio lounge, drinking beer and reading old issues of Tape Op magazine.

Longtime fans will note that James & The Quiet is markedly darker than Toth’s previous album Second Attention, and features many songs that have become live staples in the Wooden Wand oeuvre over the past year. It is also significant in that it will likely be the last album under the Wooden Wand moniker (future releases will be released under Toth’s Christian name) and as such, simultaneously closes one chapter and introduces another. “I'm tired of answering questions about the Vanishing Voice stuff,” Toth succinctly explains.

Hoping to transcend genre tags, Toth, with more than a little help from his friends, has crafted a consistent and creative batch of songs that rewards repeat listens and continues to showcase his talent as a songwriter.

Bryan Scary and The Shredding Tears To Embark On Filter-Sponsored Nationwide Tour.

“Bryan Scary's debut album rocks the candy shop, pillaging it for as many audio confections as possible. It's adventurous, fully fleshed, and catchy as hell.” –Pitchfork

Bryan Scary and his band, The Shredding Tears, will take its unique brand of kaleidoscopic, psychedelic pop out on the road this month for a nationwide tour sponsored by Filter throughout May and June. The band's debut album The Shredding Tears evokes the spirit of Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Roald Dahl and H.G. Wells, and also incorporates sinister elements of macabre and epic fantasticism throughout its 15 tracks. The record is already commanding the attention of fans of late-period Beatles, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, XTC and The Kinks with its huge hooks, stories, dynamic arrangements and strangely infectious lyrics.

The folks at MySpace have taken note, and Bryan Scary and The Shredding Tears will be the site's featured artist from June 4th through June 10th. Not to be outdone, the celebrity blogger turned music tastemaker, Perez Hilton, also had some choice words about Mr. Scary (LINK).

UK buzz band The Lodger to release debut album Grown-Ups stateside via classic California pop label Slumberland Records.

“They may be the perfect three-piece pop operation” – Artrocker

“...a clattering, Buzzcocks-like classic...” – NME

“When it comes to mastering the art of getting tunes stuck in heads, few in Leeds can rival The Lodger” – Leeds Guide

On the heels of the successes of bands like The Kaiser Chiefs and The Arctic Monkeys, the north of England is fairly bursting with exciting guitar pop bands, and The Lodger is amongst the brightest hopes. Taking its cues from fellow northerners The Smiths and The Wedding Present, The Lodger's music is classic melodic pop, fueled by sparkling hooks and plangent lyrics. The tunes are sharp and timeless, a thoroughly modern distillation of great Britpop from the 60s right up to today. Grown-Ups is a perfect introduction to the thrilling pop charms of The Lodger.

Oakland, California-based label Slumberland Records has always had an ear for the next big thing, and is best known for releasing records by Velocity Girl, The Aislers Set, Hood, Rocketship, and The Softies. Label head Mike Schulman has been fairly quiet over the past several years, waiting for the next Slumberland worthy act to strike his fancy. The band that did just that was The Lodger, a band that Schulman feels has made a timeless pop record in Grown-Ups. The label will release CD and vinyl versions of the album this summer.

The Lodger was born in Ben Siddall's Leeds flat in 2004. Encouraged by local label Dance To The Radio, Ben recruited friends for bass and drum duties, tuned-up with live shows around town and debuted in early 2005 with a track on a Dance To The Radio compilation. The band quickly followed-up with its excellent debut single “Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion,” the “Watching” 7-inch on Double Dragon, and a track for the Wrath label's split 7-inch series.

Soon after, the UK press was raving, with the NME repeatedly mentioning The Lodger and featuring “Many Thanks for Your Honest Opinion” in the influential “What’s on the NME Stereo?” column. London-based indie label Angular Records picked up The Lodger's third single “Let Her Go” and in late 2006, the band entered a small Sheffield recording studio to being work on its debut album. The result is Grown-Ups.

The Lodger recently returned from a tour with Rough Trade buzz-band The Long Blondes and another extensive European tour in support of Grown-Ups is in the works. The Lodger plans to hit US soil later this year. For now, check out Grown-Ups and its stellar first single and video for the song “Kicking Sand.”

Neurosis fans watch the making of its forthcoming album Given To The Rising.

Fans of the Bay Area's legendary masters of behemoth, psychedelic operatic guitar girth Neurosis have already shown their urgent anticipation for what is shaping up to be the band's biggest release to date. The album Given To The Rising is slated for release this June, but already lower-quality leaked versions have circulated online, while a short promotional video posted on the band's Neurot Recordings website and Fanatic Promotion's YouTube page received thousands of views days after going live.

The video features new live footage and in-depth interviews conducted during Neurosis' breakneck six-day recording session with engineer Steve Albini in December 2006. To give press a taste of the disc, the album is available to listen to (along with a video link, bio and additional info) online.

Also, the influential sextet has released an MP3 of the track “Water Is Not Enough” for free download.

Topping it all off, Neurot Recordings has announced plans for a series of “isolation listening events” for journalists leading up to the album's release. Members of the press are invited to partake in this special event geared to create the proper listening environment for the album in which writers experience the tracks in full isolation. More details will be announced soon.

Given To The Rising is like being submerged in an isolation tank -- it's enveloping, subverting the senses with surreal visions we'd swear were our own, cleverly jarring and disorienting consciousness beyond any footing in reality. As any diehard Neurosis fan will tell you, there's a moment with every new record and live show at which the band will stop as if the world has frozen in position, then suddenly kick into the primordial wail that we've all come to recognize as the “Neurosis note” that forces the listener's head and shoulders to lurch and sway almost uncontrollably. Given To The Rising is Neurosis at its most captivating and hypnotic.

Put simply, the album is some of the band's most raw and immediate material to date, but it is also more complexly orchestrated and richly thickened with psych-damaged overtones. Given To The Rising is more than a just a powerful collection of songs -- it's more like a religious experience. While personal epiphanies are repeatedly told by those who've been converted by Neurosis' sensory overloading live show as well as its recordings, there's a hypnotic quality to this album that takes hold from the opening guitar squall of the title track.

Once again recording with revered engineer and longtime friend Steve Albini (as the band has for five previous albums,The Eye of Every Storm in 2004, A Sun That Never Sets in 2001, Sovereign in 2000 and Times of Grace in 1999), Given To The Rising bears the band's signature crushing heft and cathartic force. However, it also finds Neurosis delving into increasingly psychedelic effects and twisted, inventive song structures. Much of the dramatic lull of recent works is forgone in favor of full-on attack. While it's reflective of the band's signature aggressive pummeling, Given To The Rising is not just an exercise in Wagnerian thunder. Neurosis instead takes an exploration into psychoactive prog-rock and eviscerating symphonic thud that moves well beyond anything that might fit snugly within a particular genre. It's as though the band has taken cues from such psych-noise predecessors as Hawkwind, Faust, Skullflower and Chrome, merged those elements with the sickening frequency assault of Throbbing Gristle and then submerged them within Neurosis' saturated sonic strata.

“We stand encircled by wing and fire” growls vocalist/guitarist Scott Kelly, opening the album and its title track, the band's heels already dug deep in the dirt, blasting forth in all directions at once. It's as though we join the battle already in progress, and by all means we have -- Neurosis has fought hard to maintain its sovereignty not just in the music business, but as a boundlessly creative entity consisting of Kelly, guitarist/vocalist Steve Von Till, bassist/vocalist Dave Edwardson, drummer Jason Roeder, keyboardist Noah Landis and visuals manipulator Josh Graham. The band brought keyboards to heavy punk. It brought experimental noise to metal. It merged antique droning folk with Black Flag's desperation. All the while, forging onward toward new means to explore the infinite realms of catharsis and self-transformation, while myriad bands simply follow in its wake. Consistent with this new, darker and evermore powerful sound is Graham's stunning album artwork depicting antique Eastern European statues and symbols interwoven to create a landscape of strength and survival.

The guitars grunt and groan like sinister beasts on “Fear and Sickness”, propelled by Roeder's clever rhythmic shifts delivered by thunderous, rollicking tom beats that lunge into half-time thumping kick drum and snare blasts. “To The Wind” opens with a deceptively delicate, albeit forlorn melody unlike anything we've come to expect of the band, which is abruptly choked off at the 2-minute mark by one of the most brutally sudden shifts of mood and tempo. A slight, barely audible growl hints at the change to come, but when a wall of chiming bent-notes and drop-tuned sludge guitars, paired with a stomping beat erupt over the melody, it's truly monolithic in impact. Edwardson slings heavy low-end distortion over the top with howling bent notes adding powerful harmonic overtones. But, perhaps the highlight of the song comes during a brief respite, when Kelly lets out an astounding 29-second-long throat-curdling scream at the song's climax. Von Till's rasping whisper sounds downright haunting over the rhythmic churn and Landis' syrupy tones on “Hidden Faces” prove ample evidence to the band's latest evolutionary step. “Through eyes of the wheel I will see you coming,” Von Till howls, the band erupting in consensus.

The Berg Sans Nipple announces U.S. tour with The Faint in support of Team Love release, Along The Quai.

“...The Berg Sans Nipple played an amazing set last night at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. The half-French, half-Nebraskan duo had a setup that could have easily belonged to a pretentious noise band; each member sported drums, keyboards, and a host of other various electronics and instruments (a steel drum, a melodica, cornet, etc.). However, The Berg Sans Nipple use these elements to create beautiful, sweet melodies.” – CMJ

The Berg Sans Nipple (it means “the mountain without a top”) is comprised of the pseudonym-donning Lori Sean Berg -- a debonair Parisian who looks like he might come from Omaha -- and Shane Aspegren, a European looking fellow who is actually an Omaha native who lived in Paris for six years.

The band proves to be as entertaining live as it is on its newest release Along the Quai (Team Love.) At a March show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom with friends and collaborators Do Make Say Think, The Berg Sans Nipple had everyone from dreadlocked hippies to backward-cap-wearing frat boys to generally stoic hipsters dancing along to its afro-beat inspired percussion, immaculately layered loops, and hypnotizing melodica laden set.

Fans of The Berg Sans Nipple’s live show can stop hoping and start rejoicing. Having toured extensively throughout Europe, the band is now prepared to give audiences a reason to show up to venues early by bowling them over on a 20-date U.S. tour with Omaha electro-rockers The Faint. After one album, three EPs (one of which was a soundtrack) and a handful of compilation tracks, Along the Quai is the band’s first “proper” North American release and is the most ambitious recording to date on Conor Oberst’s (Bright Eyes) Team Love label.

The Berg Sans Nipple holed up last year in a house in a remote Parisian suburb with producer Antoine Gaillet (NTM, Johnny Halliday, M83) to create Along The Quai. The end result somehow manages to effortlessly blend dreamy electronica, percussion-heavy afro-beats, layers of feedback, pop melodies and dub blankets, creating a cohesive collage of everything that's influenced the duo since birth. While the duo’s organic sound lends support to the rumor that they are actually Siamese twins separated at birth, the reality is that they are two kids both best known for their skills as drummers, trapped in a tangled mess of cables, keyboards, samplers, horns, bells and machines.

When not creating music as The Berg Sans Nipple, Aspegren and Berg are still creating music. Aspegren can be heard playing drums on the latest Bright Eyes record Cassadaga and Berg was most recently a member of the beloved and hyped French anti-folk group Herman Dune. The Berg Sans Nipple plans to return to Europe at the end of the summer to begin recording a new album.

Former Swervedriver frontman Adam Franklin aims Bolts of Melody at the U.S., collaborates with Interpol drummer in Setting Suns project.

Adam Franklin spent the 1990s as singer, guitarist and main songwriter for London-based Swervedriver, the genre-breaching Creation Records rock band. Was it dream pop? Was it shoegrunge? Listeners could always shuffle the words “dream”, “grunge”, “pop”, “shoe” and “melange” to their own tastes, but what remains consistent even to this day is the diehard dedication of Swervedriver fans. Certainly the group's heavy melodies incorporated traces of The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, Husker Du and Sonic Youth, but it never fit conveniently into a singular genre. Swervedriver's live shows were known for being loud and hypnotic with soaring, hook-laden tunes about UFOs and driving through the desert in the middle of the night.

Since Swervedriver went into orbit in 1999, Franklin has experimented with a number of stylings on six releases under the name Toshack Highway and one appearance on a compilation album under his own name. Franklin's forthcoming seventh post-Swervedriver solo album, Bolts of Melody is his first under his own name.

Franklin's newer work alternates between a full band sound with acoustic/electric guitars, electric keyboards and bubbly moogs played through guitar effects pedals -- someone described the first album as “Spacefolk.” Sometimes, it's a much more back-to-basics affair -- just Franklin on his own playing simple melodic pop songs accompanied by the warm glow of the compression of the tape machine. Bolts of Melody is occasionally a little electronic and sometimes a little bit psychedelic, a little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll. You know, whatever... Just take a listen.

In addition to his Toshack Highway and forthcoming albums, Adam Franklin's collaboration with Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino, Setting Suns is in the works. The power duo has posted a few new tracks on its MySpace page.

Bolts of Melody features Franklin's recent “Syd's Eyes” single and “Birdsong (Moonshiner Version),” which were previously only available as Black Mountain seven-inch and Shifty Disco download-only releases respectively. Additionally, the singer/guitarist's cover of Wolf Parade's “Shine A Light” that was posted on the Toshack Highway MySpace page. The lead of track from Bolts of Melody, “Seize The Day” is also available for download (MP3).

Bolts of Melody Tracklisting:

The Basement Play First US Dates, Debut Album Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs Available Now

“Their Irish barroom sing-a-long sound is done with impeccable precision” – The Tripwire

“…Ultimately impressive” – No Depression

“…will sail beyond all other pretenders” – NME

“Authentic blues swagger to delight fans.” – Uncut

“A whole record full of that kind of rich, organic rock that so few bands do these days (or at least do well).” – Dagger

With a unique blend of indie-rock, blues, country and Irish barroom folk songs, The Basement have become a household name in their native Northern Ireland. Produced by Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys) Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs already feels like a living and breathing classic. The US version has been totally re-sequenced and features two early singles not included on the European version. The Basement will appeal to fans of M Ward (who they recently toured France with), Jenny Lewis, Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket as well as older artists like Son Volt, Ryan Adams or The Old 97’s.

The Basement launched amid a mass of praise from the UK's leading music press and are currently in the midst of playing their first US shows. Early singles wetted a feverant appetite and the Irish four piece went into the studio to record their heavily anticipated debut. After literally years in the studio, The Basement officially announced their arrival in July of 2006 the release of Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs. Now available in North America via Zealous Records, Americans can now get a taste of what NME predicted “will sail way beyond all other pretenders”. [MORE]

“...the Roc's golden boy [Kanye West] has all the accolades, the Grammys, the sales and the buzz. But there's another beatsmith in the Windy City that hip hop fans should be looking out for...” – Elemental

“Rookie Chicago beatmaker Copperpot puts more bounce in the step of underground rap than it has seen in many a moon. [Four Stars].” – Remix

Chapter 7 will stand the test of time because of Copperpot's excellent production work.” – RapReviews.com

“Four Stars” – Vapors

On Tuesday, May 15th, Copperpot continues his monthly residency at Shebeen, NYC, in the "Plays Well With Others" series. It is a stellar night with additional music provided by the Y party champion R.P. Freely and drinks provided by the always gracious Dalya and Taryn.

Copperpot has been producing hip hop since 2000 when he joined The Phonograph Scientists, a Chicago-based turntable crew. Pot went solo in 2005 with his album Chapter 7 and soon after things got hot when The Chicago Reader ran a feature spotlighting his appearances on local projects from artists like Qwaazar (Typical Cats), Iomos Marad (All Natural) and several acclaimed 12" singles featuring local Chicago emcees paired with lyricists from London.

Now, with his new album, WYLA?, Pot has strayed from the bedroom producer style. Enter Matthew Lux, a member of the experimental group Isotope 217. Lux called upon a slew of artists from all over Chicago to help create of WYLA?, most notably Jeff Parker and Dan Bitney, members of supergroup Tortoise. WYLA? also features many notable guests, including hip hop legend KRS One.

Copperpot will release his sophomore album WYLA? this summer on the EV Productions label. Check out the album's lead track "Come Back Home" featuring KRS One (MP3).

Shebeen is a great spot located in Soho (202 Mott St. btw Spring & Kenmare) so be sure to come out and have a drink or four with Copperpot and friends.

J. DiMenna News

"... His style tempts and entices, not unlike being mesmerized by the eyes of a cobra." - Amplifier

J. DiMenna played a show at Brooklyn's Luna Lounge last Friday (see photo at left. Credit: Johnny Leather) that the New York Press called "...quite impressive, especially the use of a drifting steel guitar."

The instrument mentioned is played by Joe Novelli on a custom guitar made by his uncle and it can be heard all over DiMenna's new digital-only EP If He Could Speak Now. Stream it HERE.

The EP is an accompaniment to DiMenna's Awkward Buildings album which recently caused Bob Boilen of NPR's All Songs Considered to say, "DiMenna's made a CD that's infectious. Its the kind of infectious music that took time to grab me, the kind of infectious music that I find myself singing and not realizing what it is or how it even crept into my subconscious."

The video for one of the songs from Awkward Buildings, ["Preacher," (MP3) which appears in live form on the EP] was directed by Roland Becerra. Becerra recently won the Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film contest and will be showing his winning film Dear Beautiful at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

The film (LINK) contains DiMenna’s song "To Meet You" and was created in Becerra’s signature animated style which is also featured in the "Preacher" video (LINK).

Mingle With Singles

Hi – this is Josh Bloom, president of Fanatic Promotion writing. With the proliferation of the MP3 culture, the era of the album is giving way to the single again. While I love to linger with a singer, I also love to mingle with a single.

And thus, this post entitled MINGLE WITH SINGLES. With this, I intend to give you a peek into new bands on the Fanatic roster that are getting a lot of spin time on my personal iPod.

These include: ahead-of-time tunes (a track from a record that we’ll be talking about more extensively in the near future), exclusive tracks (remixes and hot-off-of-the-boards new songs), and otherwise unavailable cuts (like vinyl-only tunes and even MP3's of 7"s – the original single – bringing it all back home!)

There are many ways to listen: you can download individual tracks via the links below, download a fully mixed 30-minute MP3 version here, subscribe to the Fanatic podcast via iTunes or another podcast service via our newsfeed.

Any way you choose it, please MINGLE & ENJOY.

This edition of MINGLE WITH SINGLES includes tracks by:
01. People Noise (new band featuring Zeke Buck, formerly of VHS or Beta.)
02. The Lodger (catchy new UK band on the revitalized Slumberland label.)
03. Adam Franklin (Swervedriver frontman with a great new solo album.)
04. Chris Bathgate (Michigan singer-songwriter giving Sufjan a run for it.)
05. Meowskers (Kick-ass pop band from Brooklyn that I know you'll love.)
06. Black Moth Super Rainbow (A remix by The Octopus Project.)
