“There’s something about starting the record with a voice other than mine that I really liked,” says NYC-based songwriter David Bronson of “Songbird,” the lead-off track and first single from his new album Questions (Big Arc Records), out today. “You would only do that if it’s something special, and you’re not going to get more special than Robin Clark.”

“Robin is one of the voices of David Bowie’s Young Americans and her husband Carlos Alomar was the guitarist on some of Bowie’s biggest hits, including ‘Young Americans,’ ‘Heroes,’ and ‘Fame,’ which he co-wrote with Bowie and John Lennon,” Bronson explains of the showbiz legends, who along with their daughter Lea-Lórien, are an integral part of Bronson’s band throughout Questions.

Besides being one third of the immortal backgrounds on Bowie’s landmark “plastic soul” album, Clark has also lent her talents to recordings and performances by Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyonce, to name a few. In addition to more than twenty-five years on Bowie's most commercially and critically adored work, Carlos Alomar can be heard on records by Iggy Pop, Paul McCartney, and Alicia Keys, among many more.

As it was with The Long Lost Story, production for Questions was handled once again by Lou Reed producer Godfrey Diamond, who is also the man that turned the Alomars on to Bronson’s work.

“When I mentioned Young Americans to Godfrey, I didn't actually expect him to bring in the actual singers from the record!,” Bronson exclaims.

It seems that the Alomars were more than happy to be there. “I love intelligent songs. Songs that are worth singing, songs that would stand the test of time,” says Carlos. “When I first heard David Bronson, iconic writers came to mind. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and dare I say it, even Bowie. Recording Questions was pure joy.”

Clark concurs, saying, “In every generation there is always a need for a great storyteller, one that can shine a light on the human condition. I think that David Bronson is that person.”

Austin-based rock & roll foursome Moonlight Towers released its latest album Heartbeat Overdrive in the hubbub of late 2014, and now in these first days of 2015, the album is positioning itself as a “one you might have missed” contender. Coming on the heels of notice from the local Austin media for the seasoned band’s infinitely catchy and wholly satisfying roots rock and pop songs, Moonlight Towers will play a string of Southern dates in support of the release this week. See above for full itinerary.

Additionally, in response to Heartbeat Overdrive becoming an instant top seller at local Austin institution Waterloo Records, the Moonlight Towers’ label home Chicken Ranch Records has pressed up an LP edition of the album, including a limited 180-gram white vinyl limited to 100 copies. While the wax won’t hit stores nationally until March, both the white vinyl and standard black vinyl versions are available via the Chicken Ranch Records website, local Austin retailers, and will be sold by the band on tour.

Moonlight Towers distinguished itself 2011 when revered musician-actor-legend Little Steven Van Zandt named the tune “Heat Lightning” from band’s Day Is The New Night album one of the “coolest songs in the world.” Back then, band leader James Stevens said “We just want to make people dance,” and while he states that Heartbeat Overdrive “doesn’t totally overwhelm the listener with heavy ‘me, me, me’ deep thought,” it’s a claim that still sounds very much like “We just want to make people dance.”

Regardless, Heartbeat Overdrive is, as its title suggests, passionate and strong. So much so that “recommended if you like Springsteen, Petty, and 70’s-era Dylan” is kind of putting it mildly. This last bit is clear on the album’s first single “Out Of The Gray,” which Stevens explains “was written to chronicle that shitty feeling of watching someone you love go away forever, yet doing your best to pick it all up.”

With all of this “not heaviness,” one might think Stevens is perhaps putting on a brave face rather than be thought of as a purveyor of sadness when he says Heartbeat Overdrive isn’t a heavy album. But, to his credit, when you get to the grooves themselves, the album is a real jam. “I think we thrived on that energy,” he says. “It was an emotional roller coaster, but I just wanted to get the rawest performances I could.”

Charlie Belle is an Austin, Texas-based trio comprised of three teenagers with 30-plus years of music-making between them. The group, comprised of sister and brother Jendayi Bonds (vocals, guitar) and Gyasi Bonds (drums, vocals), and Zoe Czarnecki (bass) will see the national release of its debut EP on January 13^th, 2015.

The band’s catchy sing-alongs bring to mind the English “alternapop” sound of 90’s – bands such as The Sundays, Belly, and The Lemonheads (more popular in the UK than its native Boston, after all) to name a few. Charlie Belle – named for the Bonds siblings’ great-grandmother – further sites Esperanza Spalding, The Strokes, and Arctic Monkeys as more contemporary influences.

At 16-years-old, Jendayi is the elder in Charlie Belle. Born in Atlanta, she picked up the guitar at seven years old after moving to Philadelphia, quickly began writing her own songs, and at the age of ten, formed Charlie Belle with Gyasi after relocating to Austin in 2008. Gyasi was only four when he began drum lessons and it didn’t take long to discover that he was a natural.

In 2011, the then-duo covered “Strange Powers” (dang, these kids are cool!) for a series of videos related to the promotion of the documentary of the same name about The Magnetic Fields. Shot in Gyasi’s bedroom when he was just eight-years-old, the clip later landed them in USA Today.

Soon after, Jendayi was interviewed by Amy Poehler as part of the comedienne’s “Smart Girls” web series and, at age 14, Jendayi fulfilled a personal goal when Charlie Belle was invited to perform at the Austin City Limits festival, an appearance that became the jump-off point for the band as a live act in Austin.

As Charlie Belle begins down the road towards national recognition with the national release of its debut EP, the band is continuing to get noticed at home. Just this fall, The Austin Chronicle named Jendayi the “Best ‘It’ Girl” in the paper’s annual “Best of Austin” issue, summing up their coverage with a simple statement: “Yup, she rocks.”
