Referencing the glory days of hair metal’s reign, the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Japan-by-way-of-planet-Peelander foursome Peelander-Z poured over hundreds of gear reviews and blogs, and started collecting era-appropriate gear, to construct the new album Metalander-Z, a recording that is both completely of its time and completely timeless.  The album arrives today via Austin’s Chicken Ranch Records and Peelander-Z will launch a nationwide tour in support of the record tomorrow in Pittsburgh.  See below for a complete itinerary.

Some of the albums that inspired Metalander-Z include AC/DC’s High Voltage, Cinderella’s Night Songs, Def Leppard’s Pyromania, Iron Maiden’s Number of The Beast, Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love, Van Halen’s 1984, and ZZ Top’s Eliminator.  The album’s lead single is “Ride On The Shooting Star,” about which band leader Peelander-Yellow says, “Don’t stay at home, let’s go to see Milky Way with flying shining shooting star!!! We need long hair (wig is fine), cool metal tee, dyed jeans, and go to karaoke bar!!! Then sing this song!!!  Ohhh yeahhh!!! This is answer for beautiful hair metals!!!”

“…a moody, complex, emotionally fraught record.” – San Francisco Bay Guardian

San Francisco-based band Yassou Benedict recently released the second single from its debut “In Fits In Dreams” EP, and now the song has a video to go with it. Shot over the course of one morning in Golden Gate Park, the clip for “Last Cicada” was filmed, directed and edited by Theo Quimby and Yassou Benedict vocalist, Lilie Bytheway-Hoy.  See the video now as exclusively premiered by Earmilk.

“‘Last Cicada’ is the first attempt at making a music video for ourselves,” band member James Jackson says. “It sticks pretty closely to the ethos of the song, focusing on running and destroying aspect.”  The initially quiet, but deliberate tune is a relatable take on the ever-present pressure of the weight of the world.  “It's about how we handle the times we live in.”

Formed when the band members were attending high school in upstate Hudson, New York, Yassou Benedict conveys a surreal longing in its music via unconventional structures and shifting time signatures that are bold, emotional, and immediate.  While back in Hudson to record the “In Fits In Dreams” EP, the band’s producer Steve Durand introduced Yassou Benedict’s music to his friend and collaborator, former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins member, Melissa Auf Der Mauer.

Melissa is also a resident of Hudson,” explains Jackson. “Steve played her some of our tracks, she really liked them, and offered to sing on them.”  Auf Der Mauer can be heard on two “In Fits In Dreams” songs, including the first single and video for “The Cloisters,” which recently premiered via Black Book Magazine.

With lyrics both personal and political, Yassou Benedict’s songs are inspired by coming of age in these turbulent times of progress and destruction, and they reflect the minds of a group of young individuals working to create music that is disconnected from any trends or revivals.  Each of the band members – the group also includes Patrick Aguirre, and A.J. Krumholz – brings wildly different tastes in music to the table.

“We dislike each other’s tastes for the most part,” jokes Jackson. “But, when we make music together, the differences lend themselves to this genre defying sound that we create.  All of these influences come through in our music at different times.”Yassou Benedict’s debut EP “In Fits In Dreams” is out now on the band’s own Be Easy Baby. Members of Yassou Benedict are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Still a teenager, but wise beyond his years, San Francisco-based songwriter Andrew St James to release “Doldrums” debut, Sept. 24th.

New single “The Lost, The Vain” is pointed commentary on vanity and class.  Hear it via Interview Magazine, see it via SF Weekly.

“This kid is headed for big things.” – USA Today

“He possesses remarkable lyricism and self-awareness.” – Interview

“Class is deceiving when it comes to understanding people,” Andrew St James says of “The Lost, The Vain,” the latest single from his upcoming debut album Doldrums.  Incorporating a beyond-his-years lyrical vision with a unique gift for melody-making, the 18-year-old musician from the fog-enshrouded misty hills of San Francisco’s Twin Peaks lands firmly in the alt-folk world, but displays a real knack for timeless songwriting.

“The Lost, The Vain,” recently premiered via Interview Magazine, is, as St James explains, “a comment on vanity, and more specifically that it won’t matter what your bank statement said when you’re six feet under. It’s a lyrically heavy song, so for the video, we didn’t want to distract from it with a narrative or too much production,” he says of the Aaron Eisenberg-directed clip for the song, streaming now via hometown tabloid SF Weekly.  The simplicity of the video is moving, with St James seen performing the song in a redwood grove in Nicasio, California, contrasted with some of the more upscale areas of Pacific Heights.

The scenes play directly into the song’s references to the rich and famous and whether or not there is any personal fulfillment to be gained from those lifestyles.  The video also highlights the subtle psychedelic undertones of the songs, as well, with the sparse lighting in the trees providing a backdrop for some post-production tricks.  Produced by St James himself along with veteran Bay Area producer Jim Greer (a platinum record recipient for his work with Foster The People), Doldrums will be released on September 24th via the Island Jar / Fortune label.
