“I can’t front like Robert Pollard hasn’t been a huge inspiration to me,” says Brian Wiegert of St. Louis-based band Picture Day about the Guided By Voices frontman. “‘Madoline’ is us consciously trying to do something upbeat. The chorus is inspired by Del Shannon and Frankie Valli, except with Brian May-style layered guitars.”

Check it out for yourself as MAGNET, Spinner and hometown independent music radio station KDHX–St. Louis have all featured the hook-filled track recently.  “Madoline” will appear on the upcoming Picture Day EP “Every Day Is Picture Day,” out April 16th.  The catchy, to-the-point tunes on “Every Day Is Picture Day,” show off the combination of chops and sense of humor that defines this band.

Influenced by confirmed rock legends such as The Who, Bowie and the previously mentioned Guided By Voices, Picture Day also embraces the unexpected by participating in Ween tribute nights, fostering a hip-hop side project with three album releases to date under the name MLD, and performing with self-described ragtime entertainer, Pokey LaFarge (a St. Louis sensation who appears on Jack White’s Blunderbuss.)

“It occurred to me some years ago, that music is the one thing that no one is forcing me to do,” says Wiegert. “I punch a clock, and when I’m done, I drag my ass to band practice because I want to hear some loud guitars.”  Picture Day’s latest EP “Every Day Is Picture Day” arrives on April 16th, 2013. In a release day review of the Australian duo’s first official musical output in over a decade, CMJ has called the “Small Batch” EP, “Exactly what the Cannanes needed to mark their return.”  The new six-song release (available from exro.fm/Lamingtone) contains the single “Crawler” which was recently premiered via USA Today.

“Crawler” is also the subject of a remix by popular UK producer Richie Phoe (described as as “Brighton’s Lee Scratch Perry” by BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank) and is scheduled to appear on the April 16th release of the “Small Batch Remixes” EP which includes “Small Batch” re-workings by Phoe and fellow producer, Dr. Version.

The Cannanes have been releasing modest, ramshackle records since forming in Sydney, Australia almost 30 years ago.  Though essentially underground, the band has amassed a legion of fans in that time, including Kurt Cobain, who, it was later discovered, name-checked The Cannanes as a personal favorite in his posthumously published journals.

The new “Small Batch” EP is the first release in over a decade from band members Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil.  SPIN recently premiered the EP’s first single “Bumper,” with USA Today recently premiering the follow-up single “Crawler.”

Austin-based band Boy + Kite will follow-up its 2011 debut album with a new EP, scheduled to hit digital retailers next week.  Titled “We Can Go Anywhere We Want,” the new EP (available on March 19th) was recorded by Nada Surf keyboardist Louie Lino.

The band will play songs from “We Can Go Anywhere We Want” during South By Southwest this week (see above for details) including the first single “Fall,” which has just been premiered by Diffuser.fm.  Boy + Kite will also be blogging from South By Southwest for the popular music discovery website.

Of the new song, band member Darvin Jones says “‘Fall’ describes what it would be like to know that you’re dying and to try and shape the attitude you’d have on the way out. Reality lies in our minds, so why not choose to make the world seem really small in the face of death?”

“Take Sonic Youth’s dynamic shifts and sexy sensibility.  Add what could be said to approach a fetish: Electric axes digging hard into blues-based riffs, then throw in some Pixies/Cure love,” said My Old Kentucky Blog about Go Fly, Boy + Kite’s debut album.  The dueling musical personalities of vocalist/guitarist Beth Puorro and the aforementioned Jones do indeed remind of the Gordon / Moore and Deal / Francis dynamic, a tried and true formula that works once again within Boy + Kite.

The new Boy + Kite EP “We Can Go Anywhere We Want,” will be released on March 19th.  Boy + Kite will perform at South By Southwest at the Stubhub Live! Presents showcase at The Old School in Austin at 1230AM on March 13th and at an official showcase presented by Audible Treats and The Vinyl District on March 15th at the Parish Underground in Austin at 825PM.
