Little Steven Van Zandt, famed guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and former co-star of The Sopranos, fell in love with the Moonlight Towers track “Heat Lightning” this summer. Naming the track his “Coolest Song In The World” for the week, Van Zandt went on to give the tune (and others from the album) lots of airplay over the following weeks on his long-running SiriusXM radio show, “Little Steven’s Underground Garage,” which is also syndicated to stations around the world and heard by 1.2 million listeners a week.

Now Moonlight Towers has followed-up “Heat Lightning” with another gem of a track from its latest Day Is The New Night album. The new single “The Easy Way Out” is streaming now.  The band is also wrapping production on the video for “The Easy Way Out” in addition to a live EP recorded at hometown venue Antone’s in Austin, Texas.  The “Live At Antone’s” EP features a high-energy version of “Heat Lightning” which can be heard here.

Proclaimed “amazing” by Performing Songwriter for creating what the Chicago Reader calls “perfectly molded power-pop,” the members of Moonlight Towers are “Austin’s favorite three-minute heroes” according to the Austin American-Statesman. The band will be playing a handful of dates on its way to this year’s CMJ conference where it will perform as part of a showcase presented by Chicken Ranch Records and Fanatic Promotion.  The show on Saturday October 22nd at Bowery Poetry Club also features Nashville band The Clutters and New York’s own Peelander-Z.

Moonlight Towers is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“You Go, We’ll Stay Here” is the first single from the upcoming Br’er album City of Ice.

+++

Philadelphia-based songwriter Benjamin Schurr (recording under the name Br’er) will release City of Ice, the follow-up to Br’er’s 2007 album Of Shemales and Kissaboos via the Edible Onion label on November 22nd. The first single from the album “You Go, We’ll Stay Here” is now available for free download.

Schurr’s influences range from the dark songwriting of Leonard Cohen and Michael Gira of Swans to 60’s pop and even the sounds of Philadelphia itself, with Schurr explaining that “The sounds and rhythms of the trains are what influenced the album’s percussion.” On City of Ice these bleak industrial soundscapes, bittersweet pop songwriting, and modern classical music are combined with the refined hand of a young, but experienced songwriter.

Schurr’s sensitivity to his surroundings is what makes City of Ice such compelling listening.  “Since Br’er is a personal coping mechanism for me, I really want the music to reflect the lyrics appropriately and to get the right sounds by any means necessary,” says Schurr.

This meant either learning an instrument simply to satisfy the need for a specific part or as Schurr states, to arrange for “musical one night stands” by recruiting players he’d meet at parties. Schurr would record them and typically never see them again. While extreme, this method served his mandate to honor the vulnerable subject matter on the album.

Like a dark, electronic version of The Smiths or Bright Eyes produced by Trent Reznor, the songs on City of Ice are also similar to those artists by satisfying the listener’s need for intensely personal songs containing universal truths and accessible melodies. Focusing on topics that tend to be marginalized such as abuse, displacement, and mental illness (love and joy make appearances too), Br’er manages to still wrap it in a way that commands repeat listening.

City of Ice comes packaged in a double gatefold CD sleeve built out of recycled paper, with an attached booklet containing lyrics and photography. The sleeve is housed in handmade cases covered in gel transfers of photography used in the album artwork on top of acrylic and watercolor washes. Each one is unique and hand numbered.

City of Ice will be released on November 22nd, 2011 by Edible Onion Records. Benjamin Schurr is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“Silverdrive” is the first single from the upcoming Alert New London debut album Youth.

+++

Columbus, Ohio band Alert New London is set to release its meticulously crafted debut album Youth on November 15th.   The album’s first single “Silverdrive” is available for streaming and download now.  Youth was completed over the course of 15 months in six different studios, reflecting a dedication to precision that can only come from people who truly love what they do.

Using effected guitars (up to 39 pedals), vocal harmonies (voicing universal messages), and heavy drumbeats (to entice connoisseurs and average listeners alike) on Youth, this band of best friends has created a melodic wall of atmospheric ambient pop with the album’s 11 tracks.

Live, the walls come down, as Alert New London reflects the soul of its audience, a diverse crowd that wants to move with jubilation instead of standing at the back of the club. Alert New London is creating a community with its show and is charting a path for this kind of expression in its Midwestern home town (and soon to towns beyond!)

Youth will be released on November 15th, 2011. Members of Alert New London are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
