About Dream System 8

Dream System 8 is the newly-formed, synth-based pop duo out of Los Angeles that combines the talents of veteran musicians David Klotz and Erica Elektra.

The vintage instruments used on the band’s upcoming debut album We Sleep Again (out now via Minty Fresh) are veterans, too, and include a large assortment of Rolands, Korgs, and Yamahas. Not only is the musical partnership of the humans in Dream System 8 new, so is the relationship to the band’s large brood of keys.

Recording with synths from the early 1980’s, Dream System 8’s debut emerges from these origins of artifice with natural-sounding pop songs inspired by Vangelis, The Human League, Tangerine Dream, and Duran Duran.

Klotz, whose day job has earned him four Emmy® awards as the Music Editor of television shows such as “Stranger Things,” “Game of Thrones,” and “American Horror Story,” started acquiring the gear in 2015.

“I was inspired when I started working on ‘Stranger Things’ in 2015 and first heard the score,” Klotz recalls. “I loved the sounds that the show’s composers created with synths. It was unlike anything I’d heard before in the world of film scoring.” Klotz, who has been making records under various band names for years, began plotting to make a record of pop songs based around the sound of these keyboards. His first stop was eBay.

The first three synths Klotz bought are the main instruments heard on “Losing All of You,” the debut Dream System 8 single.

At this point in the story, Dream System 8 might be conjuring images of a Nick Rhodes-ian utopia where racks of gear stretch to the sky, surrounding an isolated man who looks absolutely perfect in an expensive linen suit and make-up. But just in time, Elektra’s lyrics and vocals take these tunes out of the atmosphere and ground them in feeling – heart-tugging and delivered with emotion – exposing the roots beneath these musical landscapes.

“I grew up in a musical household, my Mom is a piano teacher and songwriter,” she says. “I’ve always loved songs with good melodies and classic chord progressions, but I’ve been held back by the technical aspects of music making.”

And then a Tinder match with Klotz yielded a band instead of a romance. Moreover, it gave Elektra the opportunity to make the greatest use of her strengths as a songwriter and vocalist.

“We’re both single parents, both musicians, and both live in Pasadena, so I thought we might still have a bit of a connection,” Klotz says. “It was a short date but at the end of it we decided to meet up again to collaborate on music.”

Emotional maturity in the age of app-based dating is hard to come by, but when it happens, great music is the result.

“I honestly thought I’d never hear from her again, but she reached out,” Klotz continues. “Dream System 8 is the perfect name for us,” Elektra concludes. “For me, it’s literally a musical dream come true.”

About The Fretless

The Fretless is the Canadian fiddle foursome playing an essential part in the emerging movement mainstreaming traditional Irish folk music.

Starting with its debut album in 2012, the band has steadily pushed further into the public eye, winning Instrumental Album of the Year at the​ ​​​Western Canadian Music Awards and Instrumental Group of the Year at the​ ​Canadian Folk Music Awards. Its 2014 tune​ ​​​“Waving To Ryan” has topped a million​ ​Spotify plays, and in 2016,​ ​The Fretless took home a​ ​​​Juno® award for Instrumental Album of The Year for its most recent full-length​ ​Bird’s Nest.

Through its deconstruction and transformation of the usual rhythmic, harmonic and structured arrangements of fiddle styles around the world,​ ​The Fretless is pushing traditional music to a new place, and has now issued itself an atypical challenge in the mission to find and convert fans unfamiliar with “progressive” traditional music.

With its latest recordings, instead of attempting to make a more “accessible” follow-up to​ ​Bird’s Nest,​ ​The Fretless is taking advantage of the recent recognition by releasing an instrumental album of tunes representing the player’s traditional roots. Recorded live in a barn in upstate New York before a handful-sized audience assembled only a few feet away from the players,​ ​​​Live From The Artfarm (​​April 6^th) is the raw result of this performance.

​​Live From The Artfarm is a joyous recording that shows off why traditional folk music is finding an audience among the non-traditional, and also why​ ​​​The Fretless is leading the charge. Among the album’s “sets” – the term used in traditional Irish music for groups of three or more tunes arranged and played together – are three new originals by

​​The Fretless.​ ​The album’s total of ten tunes were also beautifully filmed before multiple cameras, and singles from​ ​​​Live From The Artfarm will be circulated that way in order for the uninitiated to fully experience the boundless electricity of the evening.

“We’ve made a record of our favorite pub tunes, but transformed them in our world of arrangement and intricacy,” says fiddle and viola player,​ ​​​Trent Freeman. “We are hoping to bring the current pub crowd audience to us and we are hoping to bring a new crowd to the pub, too. We want everyone involved and there’s no better way than to have you in the room with us.”

It’s a give and take that makes the audience the fifth member of the band towards the end of the new album. As the enthusiastic response from the crowd grows, the band responds in kind.​

“Making this record was a test in getting out of the mindset of recording and into the mindset of performing,”​ ​says The Fretless cellist, Eric Wright. “To capture the energy of a concert, we had to play it like a concert. With​ ​​​Live From The Artfarm, we’re so excited to share the best part of​ ​​​The Fretless, which is seeing us live!”

Los Angeles! See Fawns of Love live on April 29^th at the weekly Part Time Punks event at The Echo!

“We think Flying Nun had the coolest roster on the face of the planet during the 1980s and 1990s, and they still do,” says Joseph Andreotti of Fawns of Love about the inspirations behind the band’s new music video for the song “Zine Days,” taken from the married Bakersfield-based band’s upcoming 7-inch (out March 2^nd.)

 “A lot of our favorite Flying Nun bands, like The Chills, The Bats, and The Clean, used stop motion in their music videos,” he continues. “We think those bands are ridiculously cool, and we want to be like them. We aimed to capture the theme of the song by surrounding Jenny (Andreotti – Joseph’s wife and bandmate) with objects she would have used during her adolescence, and by making it in 3-D we thought it would be a nice way to overdose on nostalgia.”

 “Zine Days” adheres beautifully to the Andreotti’s most personal inspirations, from its title, to its inspired artwork, music video, and even a Spotify playlist the band created to act as a blueprint of the influences that went into the song’s creation.

The new single arrives a year after the band’s debut album Who Cares About Tomorrow, and is the follow-up to its mid-2017 single release “Falling/Standing,” which Paste called a “dreampop gem,” and was honored as one of the best songs of the year by Los Angeles-based radio show Part Time Punks and venerable indie rock bible The Big Takeover.

“Gone are the zine days, Gone are the me and you days,” Jenny sings.

“‘Zine Days’ is a tribute to my teenage self, and a eulogy,” she explains. “I lost my eldest brother to cancer when I was fourteen, but he was sensitive to my growing pains even when his own life was tragically spiraling out of control. With ‘Zine Days’ I have done my best to capture that sense of innocence and loss.”

This depth of emotion comes to life in physical form with the single’s cover art which is viewable in 3-D and comes complete with glasses.

Both full-time teachers, the Andreottis have been married for 13 years, performing together for 16, and recording, touring and releasing music throughout that time under various band names.

“Zine Days” is the latest 7-inch by Fawns of Love, arriving on March 2^nd, 2018. The single follows-up the band’s 2016 full-length Who Cares About Tomorrow and its mid-2017 single “Falling/Standing.” Jenny and Joseph Andreotti are available for interviews.
