“…the clearest running thread throughout Ionika is fascination with Druids,” notes the San Francisco Bay Guardian in its cover story on Taara Tati aka Metal Mother.  The feature, published in the paper’s current issue, arrives a week before the release of the sophomore Metal Mother album, due April 16th on the artist’s own Post Primal label.

Tati elaborates, saying, “This inspiration was reinforced by my recent travels to the UK, entertainment like ‘Lord of The Rings’ and ‘Game of Thrones,’ and an obsession with my own Celtic ancestry.”  Have a listen to what this sounds like on “Tactillium,” the latest single from Ionika, now available via Under The Radar and Spinner.

“‘Tactillium’ pays homage to the alchemical love story of ‘The Terrible Mother’ (prima materia) and Aether (light),” Tati explains.  “The crushing analog bass conjures a cathedral event, while the syrupy vocals and thick blend of classic 80’s drum samples enclose the aural ritual of chaos worship in a warm and hauntingly maternal experience.”

“One of the main intentions of Ionika is to get energy up when the songs are performed live,” Tati says of how the new album differs from her debut album, 2011’s Bonfire Diaries.  Fans can see for themselves when Metal Mother performs at a record release show for Ionika on May 2nd at The Public Works in San Francisco.

Midnight Faces is a new duo of comprised of musicians Matthew Warn and Philip Stancil.  The DC-based duo’s debut single “Feel This Way” makes its premiere via music discovery website Baeble Music today.  The track is part of an album sampler available now that previews the band’s debut album Fornication, scheduled for release on June 18th.

.  “It’s one of the last that we worked on,” Warn says of the song.  “I wasn’t sure how it would fit in with the rest, so I didn’t plan to spend much time on it, but when Phil heard it, the melody for the chorus came to him immediately.”

Barely into his teens, Warn began making music with childhood friend Jonny Pierce (of The Drums), resulting in a full-length album released by Columbia Records.  At age twenty, Warn went on to co-found post-rock instrumental giants Saxon Shore with Josh Tillman (of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty), releasing three EPs, and two albums produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips.)

“I had been writing new music during Saxon Shore’s hiatus, with no idea as to where the songs would end up,” Warn says. “Towards the end of 2012, I asked Phil Stancil to take a shot at adding vocals to a couple of the tunes and that’s when things started to fall into place. Our influences seemed so different,” Warn explains. “But that’s what makes us unique. It’s like Tom Petty fronting The Cure.”

Midnight Faces recently completed its debut full-length album Fornication in Los Angeles with producer Jason Martin (The Drums, Cold War Kids, Starflyer 59) and will tour the US, Asia and Europe with a full band upon the release of the record this summer.  Fornication is scheduled for release on June 18th, 2013.

Red Wanting Blue performs “Hope on a Rope” for NPR’s “Mountain Stage”

2012 was year of growth for Columbus, Ohio-based band Red Wanting Blue.  Starting in January with a Top 10 debut on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart for its best-selling album to date, From The Vanishing Point, the band supported the album with non-stop touring all year.  The “From The Vanishing Point Tour” took Red Wanting Blue on its first west coast tour (which drew triple-digit crowds in markets the band had never been to previously), and to Canada for a string of acoustic support dates in front of theater-sized audiences (who purchased every copy of every CD that the guys had for sale.)  Red Wanting Blue also sold out the House of Blues in Cleveland, Lincoln Hall in Chicago, and the Bowery Ballroom, drawing a crowd in NYC five times larger than just one year previous.

In addition to appearances that included its network television debut on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” slots on VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live,” NPR’s Mountain Stage and a long-awaited session for Daytrotter, Red Wanting Blue shot an hour-long performance for the Audiotree website that showcased the band live in a way new fans had yet to see. Red Wanting Blue also sailed on The Rock Boat cruise for the second time, sharing the stage with Brandi Carlile, NEEDTOBREATHE, Good Old War, and more, and received media attention from Rolling Stone, MTV, Paste and others.

Instead of taking a break, Red Wanting Blue is now hard at work on the follow-up to From The Vanishing Point.  Working once again with producer Jamie Candiloro (REM, Ryan Adams, Luscious Jackson), singer-songwriter Scott Terry spent a week in Candiloro’s Los Angeles studio cutting skeleton demos before convening with the entire band in their Columbus, Ohio warehouse studio to begin the recording process.  The album will once again be released by Fanatic Records, distributed by Caroline/Capitol Music Group which is now part of the Universal Music family.  No release date has been scheduled.

Red Wanting Blue will take a break from the sessions for two shows this month on April 19th in Toledo at Mainstreet and on April 20th in Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls.  Tickets for both shows are on sale now.
