“Wanna feel good? Press play.” – Noisey on Charlie Belle

“It’s pretty R&B inspired, which excites me,” Jendayi Bonds of teen sister-brother duo Charlie Belle explains about the band’s new EP “I Don’t Want To Be Alone,” scheduled for release on Sept. 18th, 2015.  “I’ve really been feeling the groove and trying to figure out a way to put that into Charlie Belle without taking away from who we are.”

She has succeeded.

This time, complemented by the agile bass playing of studio vet David Andersen, the songs jump in a way that gets in your face, under your skin, and into your heart and mind.  The groove Jendayi is feeling hits home and is immediate.

“Nobody knows me like I do / But everyone is telling me what I’m supposed to do / And nobody knows what goes on in my head / But everyone is acting like all my thoughts can be read,” Jendayi sings on just-premiered the track “Petting Zoo,” the song most reminiscent of the band’s previous EP (early 2015’s “Get To Know”), bearing a distinct UK sound that doesn’t quit.

The Bonds siblings, who began playing together as a duo in 2011 (promptly landing in USA Today with a cover of “Strange Powers” by Magnetic Fields), made a splash earlier this year with their breezy debut, which recalled the English “alternapop” sound of the 90’s in a succinct and memorable handful of songs that reflected Jendayi’s mature-beyond-her-years songwriting.

Displaying a style that she began to hone starting with her first songwriting attempts at only 10-years-old (brother Gyasi started on drums at four!), the “Get To Know” EP earned Jendayi’s songs their first bit of national attention.  The new collection shows off a major step forward in the young lyricist’s songwriting and abilities with a hook.

“I Don’t Want To Be Alone,” the latest EP from Charlie Belle, arrives on Sept. 18th, 2015. Jendayi Bonds is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Austin-based trio I Am The Albatross writes about Austin on its upcoming debut album “Lonesome Son,” arriving August 7th.

“The band’s ragged rock is triumphant,’ says NPR-affiliate KUTX in its “Song of The Day” premiere of band’s “Port City.”

‘Port City’ is an ode to the part of I-10 which runs between Texas and Louisiana and passes through the many industrial port cities that lie between Houston and New Orleans,” says vocalist and guitarist Jesse Berkowitz of Austin-based trio I Am The Albatross.

The song, just-premiered by local NPR-affiliate KUTX, Austin (which said “the band’s ragged rock is triumphant”), is taken from I Am The Albatross’s debut album Lonesome Son, scheduled for release on August 7th via Rail Rider Records.  The new record is a natural, but substantial progression from the band’s early-2014 EP, which Ovrld called “Haunting and alien, full of menace and fire.”

“It’s a rock record for sure,” Berkowitz says matter-of-factly of the new group of tunes that mightily show off the influence of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Kyuss, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and ClutchBerkowitz’s heavy, blistering guitar work is complemented on the album by the no-nonsense contributions of Giuseppe Ponti on bass and vocals, and Marc Henry on drums.

Berkowitz continues to discuss “Port City,” saying, “The song is about that time spent alone, driving. On long drives it’s easy to get lost in thought and caught in a flood of memories.  Lonesome Son is a record about things ending. It’s about searching, aging, and all the irreparable change that comes with the passage of time. It’s very much inspired by life in Austin.”

Lonesome Son by I Am The Albatross arrives August 7th, 2015 via Rail Rider Records. I Am The Albatross is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

NYC!  See Jeremy Bass live @ Rockwood Music Hall this Sunday, June 7th for the New York In Spring record release

‘New York in Spring’ is essentially a love song for New York,” says classically trained guitarist and songwriter Jeremy Bass of the title track from the second of two seasonally-based records he’ll release in the first half of 2015 (the first being Winter Bare, out now.)  “I think a lot of people, artists especially, have a love-hate relationship with this city.  It’s inspiring, with an energy that’s inimitable, but at the same time the relentless pace can suck you dry.”  Bass continues saying, “Then spring comes, people take off most of their clothes, everyone’s in the streets and cafes and bars after months of being cooped up, and you think, ‘How could I ever live anywhere else?’”

For the last decade, Brooklyn-based Bass has been the Musical Director of The Secret City, the OBIE Award (Off-Broadway Theater Awards)-winning performance gathering.  Bass started with the group when its membership numbered in the single digits, and has seen The Secret City’s membership grow to the thousands during his tenure.  Even with such a substantial and supportive artistic community as an integral part of his daily life, Bass wrote his new pair of albums in literal isolation.  Returning to single living in Brooklyn after a rough divorce in late 2013, Bass found himself secluded in an empty house, sifting through his memories.

“All I wanted to do was hole up in a cave and wait for the storm to pass,” he remembers of that brutal winter of 2013.

Ultimately, the period resulted in two distinct but complimentary records: Winter Bare is a Merle Haggard, Tom Waits, and Johnny Cash-influenced group of songs that feature the mandolin and banjo, “divorce gifts” that Bass bought for himself, and the upcoming New York In Spring (arriving June 9th), a collection of Bossa nova-inspired tunes featuring Bass’ live band, and influenced by the great Bossa nova composer Jobim and Brazilian guitar masters Luis Bonfa and Baden Powell.

Winter Bare by Jeremy Bass is out now.  New York In Spring is scheduled for release in June 9thJeremy Bass is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
