Negativland’s new album, IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD, finds the group tackling their biggest subject ever: why humans believe in God.  Millennia-in-development, this ambitious and densely-crafted double CD is packaged inside an actual Holy Bible which has been appropriately repurposed into a “found” art object.

IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD intends to entertain, inform, and provoke.  On the CDs, Negativland mixes found music, found sound, found dialogue, guest personalities and original electronic noises into a compelling and thoughtful musical essay that looks at monotheism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, neuroscience, suicide bombers, 9/11, colas, war, shaved chimps, and the all-important role played by the human brain in our beliefs. Reading the attached Bible is optional.

The audio is presented as a live radio broadcast, modeled after Negativland’s weekly “Over the Edge” radio program on KPFA FM in Berkeley, CA. This theater-of-the-mind project has been carefully crafted from basic tracks recorded live in front of blindfolded studio audiences, and documents the unique style of live collage performances that Negativland has been presenting on stages, and on radio, since the formation of the group in 1980.

Since its previous album release six years ago, Negativland has kept busy with its weekly radio program, lectures, art gallery shows and live performances in the U.S. and Europe.  Currently in the works are several different studio albums, including Negativland’s all-electronic “Booper Symphonies,” two brand new “Over the Edge” album releases, more art shows, and a new touring live show called “Content!” with an upcoming performance in Portland, OR on August 29th and at Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival on August 31st.

“Music licensing queen.” – Wall Street Journal

“Relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.” – Entertainment Weekly

The Wall Street Journal dubbed musician Salme Dahlstrom a “music licensing queen” when, like Moby before her, she managed to license every track from her 2008 album The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade to various corporations and television programs.

At the time, Dahlstrom, who produces, performs, edits, and mixes all of her tracks herself, was not only just getting noticed, she was just getting started. “C’mon Y’All,” one of catchiest numbers on an album of catchy numbers, climbed Billboard’s Dance Chart and eventually received prominent placements in major ad campaigns for CoverGirl, Suave, and Kellogg’s that ran on primetime network television for months.

While managing what inevitably became a highly successful licensing business, Dahlstrom continued to do the work that got her there, and will now release “Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” on September 16th, 2014.  The new six-song collection is preceded by the single “Pop Ur Heart Out” – streaming now via Entertainment Weekly which calls the song “Relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.”

About “Pop Ur Heart Out,” Dahlstrom says, “I felt like bringing some soul and poetry to the party.  I used organic instruments - piano and acoustic guitar - and mixed them with glitch effects and Kaoss Pad to give it an electronic edge. It's one of my new favorites!”

The first remix available from the collection is the glitchy take by San Francisco-based crew, SpekrFreks (www.spekrfreks.com). Consistently found in the Top 10 of Beatport’s Electro and Dubstep charts with their productions, SpekrFreks spend their days providing soundtrack music for Disney, ABC, MTV, and other major networks.

“Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” by Salme Dahlstrom is scheduled for release on September 16th, 2014 via Kontainer Music.  The first single “Pop Ur Heart Out” arrives on August 5th, 2014, accompanied by a trio of remixes of the track by SpekrFreks, DJ Phunkae, and Quadrat Beat on August 26th, 2014.

See Una Lux live in Brooklyn at Glasslands on Sept. 18th!  RSVP here. Tickets here.

Living somewhere between Vespertine, Dummy, and Dark Side of The Moon is NYC-based four-piece Una Lux.

Do the artists behind these iconic albums need to be identified in order to evoke the feelings their music creates?  Probably not, as the tone of each of these classic records is individual enough—just like the music of Una Lux, arriving with a sound that speaks for itself and possibly you as well.

This can be heard for the first time when the “slippery gravity” of the first Una Lux single “Simon,” featuring the unforgettably clarion vocals of singer Kelso Norris, is released on August 26th.  Brooklyn Vegan recently premiered the track, describing it as “amber-hued synth rock with a grandiose slo-mo attack.”

The sound of “Simon” is rare: beautiful but troubled, futuristic but immediate, mysterious but universal.

“I've always felt ‘Simon’ was about the need to be heard and understood, no matter who you are or what your mental state is,” Norris says. “Simon just wants someone to understand him.”  The track will be followed by its official music video, and Una Lux is also now finishing its debut EP with a release date to be announced soon.

Intimate and yearning, this first group of Una Lux songs are being brought to the surface by producer Nick Sansano (Sonic Youth, Le Tigre, Public Enemy), who began working with the band in 2013 after recognizing their idiosyncratic style and ability to translate the human condition into something timeless.
