Oakland-based trio Tremor Low clearly defines its sounds as “Synthesizers, drum machines, delay and distortion pedals - in that order.”

The band’s arresting sound and visual style were recently captured in the music video for the single “Give Blood,” premiered recently via Esquire, and signaling the Tremor Low’s first nationwide shot across the bow.  The slow-motion clip, inspired by films such as “Pulp Fiction,” and “Time Crimes,” was shot by director David Dutton in one day while trespassing on private property.

Band member Don Bellenger describes “Give Blood” as “A look at confusion and misplaced blame, and, in the end,” he says, “the details of ‘who did what,’ or in this case ‘who killed who,’ become irrelevant. We are doomed to repeat our mistakes.”

Of the production itself, Bellenger says, “I tasted lots of fake blood and didn’t like it.  In one particular shot, we threw a bloody knife and then couldn’t find it, so there’s still a very incriminating knife covered in blood out there on this person’s property.”

In addition to Bellenger, Tremor Low is comprised of Fabian Paredes, and Ariel Utz Wirnsberger, who was discovered by Bellenger and Paredes after auditioning two dozen prospective band members.

Coming up in the San Francisco scene, Tremor Low has since drawn the attention of respected Bay Area DJ Aaron Axelsen, who brought the band to the stage and greater exposure, as part of his popular local Popscene event.  Performances at nationally recognized San Francisco venues such as Great American Music Hall and Bottom of The Hill have further cemented the band’s local reputation.

Now, with “Give Blood” out, and new recordings underway, the world is finally ready to fully experience Tremor Low.

“Complex and dreamlike” –USA Today

“It’s not a concept album or anything,” Los Angeles-based musician and painter Faris McReynolds says of The Sea, his latest album as the one-man band, One Finger Riot. “But there’s definitely a Side One and a Side Two, because the first half is angst, and the second half is acceptance,” he explains of the record, arriving July 22nd.

The Sea documents the end of a very long relationship, and is the first One Finger Riot full-length since a slew of releases by McReynolds in 2012, which included two from One Finger Riot and second pair from his now-shuttered ExDetectives moniker.  A prolific creative, all of this musical work is in addition to McReynolds’ “day job” as a gallery-backed painter (see his work here.)

“I feel like it’s a song that would kick a lot of people out of a crowded room and leave behind the interesting ones,” McReynolds says of “Give Me A Drug Works Forever,” the lead track and first single from The Sea, which recently made its premiere via music discover website, Groundsounds.

Of the album’s overall sonics, which he curiously describes as “punk-simple, but not punk-modulated,” McReynolds explains, “There’s a guy in the outskirts of L.A. who built me a lot of inexpensive, simple, gear to get the sounds I am after. I rely on cheap random gear from the past or one-off devices.  A lot of Radio Shack and re-purposed pre-amps.”

One of the sounds prevalent throughout The Sea is the dry fuzz guitar tone that McReynolds says is meant to mimic “the sound my Dad’s stereo made when I would plug my bass into the mic input as a kid.”  It’s a description that calls back to the sense of discovery and fresh perspective that permeates the entire album.

“This is the first record I’ve seen all the way through by myself, and I think the first that sounds like it,” McReynolds affirms. “It sounds like my previous records, but rolled into something more coherent and upright.”

Negativland pays tribute to Casey Kasem, Makes multitrack master of classic “U2” single available for re-mixing.

Culture-jamming band returns to store shelves with new album “It’s All In Your Head,” about belief in God, this fall.

Download the master tracks here to start re-inventing Negativland’s “U2” single

+++

San Francisco bay area-based culture-jamming band, Negativland, has broken its silence regarding the passing of Casey Kasem.  The late radio legend who passed on Father’s Day was featured prominently on Negativland’s 1991 maxi-single “U2,” which for better or worse, has been a touchstone of the band’s career ever since.

In tribute, Negativland is offering the original multi-track master of the song for free download with the intent of allowing anyone and everyone to re-work the seminal track. The band encourages this link to the files to be re-posted and shared.  Read more about the “U2” single and listen today courtesy of Slicing Up Eyeballs. A full statement from the band’s legal team can be found below.

Negativland has been back in the public eye recently as it preps a new album It’s All In Your Head for fall release this October. For more recent Negativland activities and topics of conversation, see the recent feature pieces on the band in Noisey and East Bay Express, an interview with Jake Fogelnest on his Fogelnest Files podcast, and the two-week spanning cover story from the Santa Cruz Weekly (1 | 2).

Negativland will be deep in the heart of Texas for a series of shows this week.  See below for dates and info.  Album details are forthcoming, but in typical Negativland fashion, It’s All In Your Head and its faith-examining content about belief in God, will be sure to spark conversation.

Subject: In Memoriam, Kemal Amin “Casey” Kasem (27 April 1932 – 15 June 2014): Negativland releases “U2” tracks for remixing and reuse

One of the most beloved voices in music radio, Kemal Amin “Casey” Kasem, died on Fatherʼs Day 2014 after a long illness, and also a very public family squabble over his continuing care. Negativland pays tribute to this broadcasting legend by reaching into its vaults and presenting what is perhaps Kasemʼs best-known work, on Negativlandʼs long-unavailable “U2” maxi-single, offering up for public consumption (and now, for creative reuse) what has been hidden from view for 23 years.

In 1991, Negativlandʼs “U2” single had one of the shortest releases in music history, squashed like a bug after less than ten days on store shelves, under legal fire from the Irish rock band U2ʼs music publisher (Warner/Chappell) and then-record label (Island). The history of this fracas was detailed in Negativland’s book and CD release, “Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2” (Seeland 013).

Now, instead of merely reissuing the “U2” record itself, Negativland presents, for free digital download, the original un-mixed studio multi-track tape for re-mixing, re-purposing and re-inventing in whichever way the listener may choose. Negativland encourages the re-contextualization of this seminal work for whatever reason, whatsoever. In keeping with the working methods and philosophy of Negativland, and the Fair Use provision in U.S. Copyright Law (Section 107, http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html), the group offers up this raw material in the hopes that entirely new versions of the work are created and disseminated.

Listeners / remixers are encouraged to post their creations in these locations: www.negativland.com and https://www.facebook.com/Negativlandland. The original record as briefly released in 1991 may be heard via the band’s website here or via YouTube here.

Negativland is a San Francisco Bay Area-based group which has been making music and collage since 1980, releasing more than 25 albums on CD and LP on their own Seeland record label. Their newest work, Itʼs All In Your Head, a long-form “collage documentary” about belief in God, will be released on Seeland in October.

Wild” by Loves It is the “Daily Download” at Rolling Stone

“Wild” is the “Song of The Day” at NPR-affiliate KUTX, Austin

The Austin, Texas based country-folk songwriting duo known as Loves It has announced and launched three months of summer tour dates in support of its current album All We Are, out now via Team Austin Records.

The band that has become known for its seemingly never-ending love of the road (playing 200-plus shows a year!) has also completed and premiered the video for “Dancin’” the latest single from All We Are.  Fans can see the video via the website for Canada’s largest music paper, Exclaim!, and an MP3 of the track is available now via Huffington Post.  A complete itinerary of tour dates can be found below.

Loves It has attracted the attention of Rolling Stone, Austin’s NPR affiliate KUTX and daily paper the Austin Chronicle, Daytrotter, airplay from Vin Scelsa’s legendary ‘Idiot’s Delight’ radio program and features from Pollstar and the UK’s R2 Magazine since its release in 2013.

‘Dancin’ is about the journey of a young emotionally vulnerable woman who goes out to find love and fulfill her potential,” explains the band’s Jenny Parrott of what bandmate Vaughn Walters describes as a Steve Earle Guitartown-era-feeling tune.” “More specifically,” says Parrott, it’s an autobiographical song about my first love, my music, my dreams and the loss, and ultimate resolution that followed.”

She continues, “My first love was a wonderful musician who invited me to move away to Nebraska and front my first band when I was 19-years-old. The problem was that everyone seemed to notice that he was an alcoholic but me. My Dad didn’t want me to go, he saw this behavior in him from the beginning, but I was so caught up with being in love.”

Parrott concludes, “I was blind at the time, but in the end there was resolution, and the song ends on a compromise between father and daughter where he shows his love by buying her dancing shoes. I had dreamed that my Dad took me shopping, and it meant that everything was okay and he could rest assured that I wouldn’t make any more horrible romantic decisions.”

The video for the tune, directed by Jillian Hall, an Audience Choice Award winner at SXSW for producing the film “Yakona,” is more lighthearted.  The clip sees Parrott and Walters racing to a gig, depicting them being transformed along the way by their experiences with the different dancers they encounter.

Director Hall explains, “We called on our friends, friends of friends, and even visited dance classes to recruit dancers.  We found quite a variety of talent including a yogi master, Cajun two-steppers, a contortionist, a ballerina, belly dancers, and even my grandpa. I mostly work on documentary films, but I’ve been wanting to collaborate with Jenny and Vaughn for a long time. I think their music lends itself well to fun ideas.”

“I think it’s a little bit ‘Alice In Wonderland’ meets bizarre but pleasant dream,” says Parrott. “There are a lot of neat details.  The two-steppers have performed at the Democratic National Convention and The Smithsonian, the extras were lured to Givens Park location by our flyers promising vegan snacks. The rest was shot in East Austin at Ortega Elementary School.”
