The dark pop of Los Angeles-based trio Early Morning Rebel generated lots of attention in 2013 after its single “Life Boat” was featured on “Grey’s Anatomy” the previous year.  “It’s easy to hear why this LA band’s aching ballad has provided a salve on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’” said People Magazine, and the continued accolades for the track quickly resulted in Early Morning Rebel becoming a go-to band in the fashion world when it was discovered that their style extended beyond their sound.

Immersed in fashion, art, film and music in LA, producers and musicians Nathan Blumenfeld-James, Dustin Bath and Joshua Mervin were soon invited to perform at fashion weeks in New York, London and Paris, making fans of Kirsten Dunst, Orlando Bloom and Drew Barrymore along the way, and racking up press from the likes of Details, BlackBook, and Vogue Italia among others.

Blumenfeld-James refers to “Shallow Breath,” the band’s new single and video, as “A forbidden love song inspired by The Smiths, ‘Goodbye Horses,’ and great American murder ballads.”  The video for the track (produced, directed, and edited by the band – though you’d never guess it considering the strength of the production values!) is even more beguiling.  “It’s a love story between a girl and a skeleton,” explains Blumenfeld-James.  “It reveals how this girl experiences intimacy. The skeleton singing to her is a look into what she fantasizes about.”  Blumenfeld-James confesses that he hopes a singing skeleton adds a quirky element to the clip as well.

Brooklyn-by-way-of-Japan-by-way-of-planet-Peelander foursome, Peelander-Z launches a 50-date tour tonight at SXSW at the Chicken Ranch Records showcase at Valhalla in Austin.  Peelander-Z takes the stage at midnight.  The band will perform several more times throughout the week including shows at the Fader Fort, and the band’s own Peelander-Fest and Mad Tiger Festival.  A complete Peelander-Z tour itinerary can be found below. Following SXSW, Peelander-Z will embark on a cross-country trek that will keep the band occupied until mid-May supporting its new album Metalander-Z, which references the glory days of hair metal’s reign.  Peelander-Z poured over hundreds of gear reviews and blogs, and started collecting era-appropriate gear to construct Metalander-Z, a recording that is both completely of its time and completely timeless.  The album’s latest single “Killer Thunder” can be heard via an exclusive premiere at The A.V. Club.

NYC-based singer-songwriter David Bronson is currently putting the finishing touches on what will be his first album of all-new material in ten years.  Working once again with Lou Reed producer Godfrey Diamond, Bronson’s as-yet-untitled new collection will be made extra special by some of the guests that will appear on the recordings, including vocalist Robin Clark and guitarist Carlos Alomar.

Bronson excitedly explains, “Robin is famously one of the voices of David Bowie’s ‘Young Americans” and Carlos was the guitarist on some of Bowie’s biggest hits, including ‘Young Americans,’ ‘Heroes,’ and ‘Fame,’ which he co-wrote with Bowie and John Lennon. Benefitting from Godfrey’s decades of experience, this new album has been done in a very different manner than the first two,” Bronson says of the new material, which follows-up 2013’s “The Long Lost Story,” comprised of two separate albums (Story and The Long Lost) that were recorded a decade earlier, but hidden until last year due to the painful nature of the content. “The new album is very far along, and sound-wise, it’s a whole different thing, a real evolution from ‘The Long Lost Story’ and the first music I’ll be putting out that’s contemporaneous with my actual life.”

The Cat Stevens and Harry Chapin-evoking songs on “The Long Lost Story” earned the attention of influential music discovery publications such as MAGNET, Under The Radar, Baeblemusic, American Songwriter, and My Old Kentucky Blog last year, and Bronson is set to make good on that with the new material.  He’ll debut acoustic versions of a handful of the new songs as part of his first Daytrotter session, taping on March 6^th, the same day that he’ll launch a string of tour dates.  See below for full itinerary.

When Bronson isn’t writing and recording his solo material, he can be found working as a contributing composer and editor on filmmaker Jennifer Elster’s “The Being Experience.”  The project is an unflinching look at existence, featuring a cast of actors, thinkers, and musicians including Dave Matthews, Moby, Questlove, Rufus Wainwright, and Yoko Ono among many others.
