Referencing the glory days of hair metal’s reign, the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Japan-by-way-of-planet-Peelander foursome, Peelander-Z, poured over hundreds of gear reviews and blogs, and started collecting era-appropriate gear to construct the new album Metalander-Z, a recording that is both completely of its time and completely timeless.

Metalander-Z’s lead single is “Ride On The Shooting Star,” which recently premiered via USA Today and now has an accompanying video, streaming now via MTV Hive. Directed by Rand Borden from monster battle federation Kaiju Big Battel, the clip depicts the story of Peelander-Purple’s journey to Earth from Planet Peelander.  “He was super bad boy before, but he is our friend right now!!!,” says band leader Peelander-Yellow.

Some of the albums that inspired Metalander-Z include AC/DC’s High Voltage, Cinderella’s Night Songs, Def Leppard’s Pyromania, Iron Maiden’s Number of The Beast, Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love, Van Halen’s 1984, and ZZ Top’s Eliminator.

Peelander–Z has appeared at major music festivals including Bonnaroo and the Vans Warped Tour and has also been featured on TV programs such as VH1’s “Best Week Ever” and Comedy Central’s “Upright Citizens Brigade.” The band has also been covered by Rolling Stone, SPIN, the Village Voice, NPR and The Onion among many others.  Peelander-Z is currently in the midst of a 35-date nationwide tour in support of Metalander-Z.  See below for the remaining itinerary.

Peelander-Yellow of Peelander-Z is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information, guest list needs, etc.

“Lenz sings her rockabilly odes with the sort of randy sass that would have been considered unladylike in the King’s court.” – People

“Like most of the songs I write, this one came to me in the night,” Los Angeles-based musician Kim Lenz says of “Pay Dearly,” the opening number from her latest album Follow Me.  The track recently premiered via Black Book Magazine, and now the Joseph Cultice-directed music video for the song makes its debut via BLURT.  “I woke up with the first verse fully formed, and after waking up four more times that night, I had ‘Pay Dearly,’ Lenz explains. “It’s a song about what you will do, what you will give up, what you will ultimately pay for something taken away from you that you dearly want back.”

Lenz has been cultivating her take on rockabilly since 1998, releasing three albums, and playing hundreds of dates around the world.  Director Cultice is already a famed celebrity photographer who has shot Lenz previously, but is helming a music video for her for the first time. “We worked together on her last two albums,” he explains.  “I was very touched that she wanted me to do her new video. The song is strong and heartfelt – an instant classic.”  The shoot was completed at Quixote Studios in Hollywood where Cultice has previously produced iconic images of everyone from Marilyn Manson to “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall.

Follow Me was produced by roots music icon Carl Sonny Leyland, and recorded by Los Straitjackets bassist Pete Curry in a manner that honors the recordings that have come before – on vintage tube gear to two-inch tape in mono.  The record is a bit of a departure for Lenz in that its lyrics deal with matters that she has yet to touch on in her songs, and that are atypical of the genre in general.  Following the release of 2009’s It’s All True, and that album’s subsequent tour, Lenz suffered a series of personal setbacks.  Discovering that she was adopted, and that her family had kept it secret all of her life opened up a flood of terrible memories for Lenz to sort through and come to terms with. At the same time, she also lost her friend and bandmate, Nick Curran to cancer.

“Some people have asked me if this is a break-up record,” she says of the life events that informed Follow Me.  “I guess it is. It’s about the breakup of the life I had known. I’d always been a fiercely independent woman, but I was really just trying to protect myself. What I’ve gone through has ultimately made me stronger, though – real strength.”  Follow Me by Kim Lenz and The Jaguars is out now via Riley Records.  Kim Lenz is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“The slo-mo heaviness of a 2,000-pound pendulum, as much grit as an abandoned highway, and a fearless sense of rock ‘n’ roll.” - MTV Buzzworthy

Oakland-based duo Steel Cranes will be blowing up eardrums nationwide starting later this month when band members Amanda Schukle (drums) and Tracy Shapiro (vocals, guitar) take their intense live show across the country.  See below for a complete itinerary for the tour that kicks off with a hometown record release show at The Night Light in Oakland.  The band’s debut album Ouroboros will be released on September 24th.   The album’s latest single “Moving On” recently spawned a music video shot in various locations around Berkeley and Oakland,

“We love the East Bay,” says Shapiro. “So, we purposely chose recognizable locations.” Those familiar with the area will notice an industrial stretch of 2nd St., a piece of the San Francisco Bay Trail that crosses over Highway 80, and a scene set in front of downtown Oakland’s Paramount Theater.  The video kicks off at the Albany Bulb, an odd place on the edge of the Bay where lots of people live in tents among graffiti-covered sculptures, structures, and huts.  This appropriately strange place is where clip’s main character first wakes up and we see her covered in paper scraps.

“They represent the various beliefs she has accumulated that are no longer relevant in helping her move forward,” Shapiro explains.  “She begins a journey toward shedding them, but holds on to the one that’s actually important.”  Shapiro’s bandmate Amanda Schukle (drums) comments about the tune saying, “‘Moving On’ was the Steel Cranes song where I knew that we had found our sound. That nasty bending-note guitar riff intro just kicks it off.”  Shapiro wholeheartedly agrees: “That nasty bendy note makes me happy.  Very happy.”

Ouroboros, produced by the band and engineered by Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Deerhoof), captures the raw energy of Shapiro and Schukle in a way that is rarely heard on records these days.  As Shapiro explains, “It was essential to us that the tension that comes with our live performance be present on the album.”

Ouroboros by Steel Cranes is scheduled for release on September 24th, 2013.  The members of Steel Cranes are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
