“The New Black” is the first single and video from the upcoming new album “We’ve Got A Map” by Tidelands.

Tidelands interviewed by the San Francisco Bay Guardian about “We’ve Got A Map” here.

“The video is basically an homage to the Mission Potrero neighborhood of San Francisco, which is not only where I live, but also where we rehearse and record,” explains Gabriel Leis, the flugelhorn playing half of the San Francisco duo Tidelands, about the band’s new video “The New Black”. The song is the first single from the duo’s We’ve Got A Map album due from Redgummy Records on August 7th.

“The entire thing is shot within about a four block radius and that was really my concept for the video,” Leis says of the clip which was shot and directed by filmmaker Nelsen Brazill. “Nelsen did a great job at capturing the feel in that part of the city, as well as matching the tension of the song,” Leis says. “The locations are all on the route from my home to our rehearsal studio out on Cesar Chavez. Tiny Telephone studios, where much of the video is shot, is on the other side of the fence from the skate park where the skateboarding shots are from and San Francisco General Hospital is right there too.”

We’ve Got A Map is the follow-up to Tidelands’ debut album, last year’s If…. As they had on If..., Leis and Araki once again collaborated with the Magik*Magik Orchestra (currently on a world tour with Death Cab For Cutie).  “We had such a successful collaboration with Minna Choi and the Magik*Magik Orchestra the last time.” Leis says.

The latest Tidelands album We’ve Got A Map will be released on August 7th.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic to talk to the band or for more information.

The leading cutting edge female-led French record label Lentonia Records will bring several of its artists to North America this week.  A string of shows, including a Lentonia Records night presented by Tom Tom Magazine (the only magazine in the world dedicated to female drummers) is on tap and will include performances from Phoebe Jean and The Air Force, EDH, and Video Love on various nights.  See below for complete dates and details.

The mini tour is in support of the launch of Lentonia Records on our shores.  The label has already established itself in Europe and with a new distribution deal with Portland, Oregon-based Nail Distribution, Lentonia is now making itself known here.  Today marks the release of the debut album Heartbreakers by Phoebe Jean and The Air Force.  The latest album Yaviz by Emmanuelle De Héricourt aka EDH is also out today. Prior to today’s releases, Lentonia has also issued the debut album by Video Love on May 8th in North America.

As for the aesthetic of Lentonia Records and its artists, the sounds are eclectic and span several genres, with the main ideology being to bring across the music of powerful women on a label run by women.  Video Love’s sound reminds of an electro-infused take on Stereolab’s pop concrete sound.  Phoebe Jean and The Air Force (actually the one-woman Baltimore based project of Phoebe Jean Dunne) is a hip-hop and pop inflected take on Baltimore club music.  EDH is the most experimental of the three, with sounds mainly mechanic, but still sensual are ripe for the remixes recently returned by artists such as Subtitle, UNISON, and Hypo.

All Lentonia Records artists are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Cut Them Where They Bleed, the latest “love/hate letter” from Atlanta, Georgia band Tiger! Tiger! is out now via Austin’s Chicken Ranch Records. The album, featuring cover art by renowned illustrator John Baizley, kicks off with its title cut which is also the album’s latest single.

Tiger! Tiger! front woman Buffi Aguero delivers a bitter, battering wind, alternately cooing and caterwauling in a haunting harangue throughout the album. In concert, the band uncorks this bottle of emotional spirits, dumps the contents and uses the empty vessel to make a Molotov cocktail of words.  See below for a handful of upcoming dates on the East coast.

In addition to the scathing vocals of Aguero, the reckless fivesome further describes its sound as being comprised of “guitars strung with razor wire (courtesy of Mr. Shane Pringle), tubercular organ (by Mr. San Leyja), stomach punch bass guitar (Ms. Susanne Gibboney), and drums that Mr. Mario Colangelo thumps and snaps like the neck of a hanged man, wrongly convicted, but guilty of... something.”

Tiger! Tiger! has performed with notable luminaries Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Woggles, and The Subsonics, superstar centurions The Fleshtones, and international big-shots Mastodon and Black Lips.

Cut Them Where They Bleed is the follow-up to 2007’s The Kind of Goodnight and is out now. Members of Tiger! Tiger! are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Portland’s Michael Gerard Levasseur, performing as Michael The Blind (a candid nod to his medically notable poor eyesight) released his latest album Are’s & Els today.  The album was recorded at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone studio and features the Magik*Magik Orchestra (currently on tour with Death Cab For Cutie).  Are’s & Els takes its title in part from the name of Levasseur’s band The Els, a clever reference to the fact that all of the band’s members have names beginning or ending in “el”.

Levasseur has been called “one of Portland’s most exceptional musicians” by The Portland Mercury for a sound that combines “the velocity of punk rock with mellifluous traditional folk instrumentation” and this is evident on “Who Is She?”, the latest single from Are’s & Els, streaming and available for download now.

“I wrote ‘Who Is She?’ about a friend of mine who always seemed to have a different new lady-friend that he would be trying to hide from everyone. He was so carefree about life in general and didn't seem to me to take romance and relationships all that seriously. Maybe I was a touch jealous. It’s sort of just name calling in good fun,” Levasseur humorously admits.

Unlike some of the more somber tracks on the album, “Who Is She?” bursts with the sunshine of a roaring guitar solo and the only appearance of a synth on the entire record, both reminders that Are’s & Els was recorded during the middle of a San Francisco summer.

Closer in tone to much of the other material on the album, My Old Kentucky Blog exclusively premiered the video for track “Sympathies” which can be viewed here: http://www.myoldkentuckyblog.com/?p=29624. The cast of “Sympathies” includes local New York-based artists, comedians and musicians including photographer Kelsey Bennett and her sister, actor Remy Bennett, both of whom happen to be granddaughters of singer Tony Bennett.

Michael The Blind’s latest album Are’s & Els is out today on Alder Street Records.  Michael Gerard Levasseur is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
