The latest track released from NYC-based folk singer Annie Crane’s upcoming album sounds like it could be a traditional folk song.  It also sounds like one that really will become an actual traditional folk song.  “Money Only Hates Me” captures a common sentiment, made even more common considering our current times and realistically, our times to come.

As with many of the tunes on Crane’s new Jump With A Child’s Heart album, “Money Only Hates Me” is made especially unique by being set amidst life in New York. The song was inspired by real-life events in which Crane lost her singing voice for three months in 2008.  Frustrated with bad diagnoses from the only doctors she could afford, Crane eventually recovered, but not without being confronted directly with the harsh reality of being a have-not and a long rehabilitation.

The silver lining is this song. “The city’s like a friend from childhood almost like... like distant kin. In one breadth enraging and supporting all I’d ever want to do,” sings Crane, summing up that time. Performing “Money Only Hates Me” in this city that sheds light on the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor only makes the song more impactful.  Crane will do just that at a record release show for the Jump With A Child’s Heart album this weekend, October 1st at 8PM at The Living Room, (154 Ludlow St.) one of NYC’s havens for new singer-songwriters.

To hammer home the concept of the world’s ambiguous relationship with cash, Crane will be giving away a copy of Jump With A Child’s Heart to each audience member that attends The Living Room performance.  The show signals the launch of several weeks of dates that will see Crane performing in bars, lounges and living rooms through the end of November.

Jump With A Child's Heart will be released on October 4th, 2011 by Constant Clip Records. Annie Crane is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“This album is, on a lyrical level alone, a true folk record...” – Old Fridges Can Kill

NYC-based folk singer-songwriter Annie Crane will embark on a tour in October in support of her upcoming Jump With A Child’s Heart album scheduled for release by Constant Clip Records on October 4thCrane will kick off the run of dates with a record release show on October 1st at NYC venue The Living Room where she will be joined by Jason Benjamin of the Red Hook Ramblers on Trumpet, Lauren Weaver on Cello, Brian Speaker on Drums, husband Eric Wolfson on Bass and Jeff Berner on Slide Guitar. Vocal harmonies will be provided by Claire Bowman of Americana duo The Bowmans.

The tour that follows will see Crane playing some intimate house shows in the same vein made recently notable by artists such as David Bazan and others. Crane is also satisfying a folk music tradition with these shows by playing to close crowds in an environment that lets the stories in her songs shine outside of the typical club environment. As with Bazan’s living room tours, these house shows can be attended by e-mailing the address provided in order to receive directions to the performance location.

One song fans are sure to hear is “Copenhagen Heart,” a song about missing home that is the current single from Jump With A Child's Heart. Crane recently released the Jesse Miksic-directed video for the tune which was in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in Ridgewood, Queens and in the artist's own apartment. It’s in this portion of the clip where viewers can clearly see the postcard reminders of Crane’s tour to Copenhagen, Paris, Hamburg and Berlin that inspired the song.

While this single was written in Denmark, the Jump With A Child's Heart album is decidedly urbane, especially for a Celtic-laced, Americana-based folk record. Tales of characters trying to make dreams come true in NYC run throughout the album and Crane plans to bring these same inspiring messages to those who see her on the road this fall. Jump With A Child's Heart will be released on October 4th, 2011 by Constant Clip Records. Annie Crane is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Austin’s Boy + Kite has released the second single from its critically praised debut album Go Fly“Deciphering Static” is another example of the fine boy-girl vocal sharing that has become the band’s signature. Go Fly has turned quite a few heads since its July release, with a sound that brings back the essential eras of Sonic Youth and The Pixies in a way that is totally refreshing, but still evokes enough nostalgia to be timeless.

One new fan is fellow rock band The Toadies (best known for the hit song “Possum Kingdom”) which picked Boy + Kite as the winner over 60 other acts of the “Your Shot To Rock” contest sponsored by Austin’s rock radio station 101X.  As part of the prize package, Boy + Kite earned a featured slot on The Toadies yearly Dia De Los Toadies festival alongside The Sword, The Black Angels and other Texas favorites.

Boy + Kite will be playing some shows of their own in Austin over the coming weeks.  As the band’s profile begins to grow in Austin, new fans will get the chance to find out that Boy + Kite can back up its album with a memorable live show.  Boy + Kite’s debut release Go Fly is out now.  Members of the band are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“Absolutely sublime.” – Rolling Stone on Princess Chelsea

“Pop perfection.” – Mix It Up (New Zealand) on Pikachunes

Two artists on New Zealand’s 60’s pop-influenced Lil’ Chief Records label have landed stateside for a series of shows on the East coast.  Princess Chelsea will release the debut album Lil’ Golden Book this week and Pikachunes with do the same with its self-titled debut.  Both acts are led primarily by solo artists – Chelsea Nikkel being the Princess and Miles McDougall being the man behind Pikachunes.  Both artists will be holing up in Brooklyn during their stay, awaiting a farewell performance to take place during CMJ at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge club.

Over three years in the making, Princess Chelsea’s Lil’ Golden Book is the first collection of what her label describes as “the soundtrack to an old Disney movie meeting Kraftwerk fronted by Enya in a 60’s production of ‘Les Miserables’ set in space.”  The album’s first single and video “The Cigarette Duet” dishes up a catchy 60’s style pop duet reminiscent of Nancy & Lee.  The humorous his / her argument about smoking combines witty, direct lyricism with shimmering pop arrangements and one of the catchiest guitar solos you’ll hear for a while.

The recording of New Zealander Miles McDougall’s debut Pikachunes album came about after he fractured his ulna while skateboarding, an injury that required reconstructive surgery. At the time, McDougall was majoring in Jazz performance on drums and the injury left him unable to play. Instead, he created Pikachunes, a first person account of the turmoil of moving to a new city to build a name as a musician. “All you have to do is write a bass line and then everybody wants to know your name,” McDougall sings in the single “Nervous,” sounding like he may know plenty about the US music scene already.

See below for US dates for Princess Chelsea and Pikachunes.  Chelsea Nikkel and Miles McDougall are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“‘Daaaamn!’ That's all we can say when we listen to the rap riot that is Yo! Majesty...” – LA Weekly

On Shunda K's “The Most Wanted”:

The original voices of Tampa, Florida’s (and the world’s) first lesbian-Christian hip-hop group Yo! Majesty are back on the road. Shunda K and Shon B, the two rappers that made you move to their ubiquitous underground hit “Club Action” are following up a successful run of European dates with a US-tour sponsored (logically!) by Toyfriend, a Swedish vibrator brand created by the design company Tickler.

Joining Yo! Majesty on a handful of dates on the tour is female Swedish DJ duo Swedish Dyke Vibes. All of the upcoming dates will also feature a solo opening set by Shunda K of Yo! Majesty featuring material from her critically praised 20-track solo debut album solo debut album, The Most Wanted.

Released in early 2011 by Fanatic Records via EMI/Caroline, the occasion of recording The Most Wanted is what initially brought Shunda K and Shon B back together.  The album’s single “I’m Da Best” features a guest appearance by Shon B and both ladies appear in the video for the track.

The experience of working together again was a good one, so prior to the launch of Yo! Majesty’s recent European tour, Shunda K and Shon B hit the studio to begin recording a new Yo! Majesty album.  The new single “Cherry Pop” representing the first new Yo! Majesty music in years is now streaming at: http://soundcloud.com/fanaticpro/yo-majesty-cherry-pop.

Shunda K will also be releasing new solo material soon. A remix and video for the track “It’s Time To Get Paid (feat. Snax)” from The Most Wanted is scheduled to debut later this month.

Shunda K and Shon B of Yo! Majesty are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
