“...a masterpiece of dark pop songwriting.” – Baltimore City Paper

Spirit Animal is a masterpiece...” – Willamette Week (Portland, OR)

The quotes above about Steve Hefter’s debut album as St. Even (how come no one ever thought of that) come from papers at opposite sides of the country, but with a consensus that meets in the middle.  It would be difficult to ignore such sentiments in a time of ultimate musical saturation.

So, let’s let the music speak for itself and give you the facts. Steve Hefter isn’t one of those songwriters that pops out of nowhere as a next big thing.  The accolades are the result of dues paid. Hefter has been churning out a steady stream of his brand of memorable, musical heartache since the late 90’s.

Currently based in Portland, but originally from Baltimore (this explains how these regional publications are ahead of the curve on this one) Hefter’s collaborative efforts with Baltimore luminaries such as Chris Freeland (Oxes, Frenemies), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), and Jason Dove followed his first album release Twist and Hold ‘Til Morning in 2007.

Prior to that album, Hefter developed his lyrically-driven folk sensibilities and melodic indie-rock textures with Judd Bolger (Judd and Maggie) and Billy Gordon (J. Roddy Walston and The Business) in the bands Sons of Buford and Challenge Club respectively.

The west coast beckoned Hefter in 2009, and now in 2011, under the name St. Even (still really cool), Spirit Animal is set to show the rest of the country what some already know. Spirit Animal was recorded with Jake Kelly (Kimya Dawson) at Materials To Outlet Studios in Portland, Oregon with an immensely talented smattering of old and new friends in tow. It will be available via Dustbin Records on September 6th, 2011.

“…dark and hypnotic, sexy and sinister, an alluring sound that swallows you whole.” – The Onion

Mineapolis duo Dearling Physique has made the first single from its upcoming three EP series available for download.  The song “Up All Night” is taking from the upcoming “Tracing The Alphabet Part 1” EP that will be followed by two more editions. The new single follows on the heels of the attention that Dearling Physique drew in late 2010 and into 2011 with its debut album Deadeye Dealer.

The debut LP mixed cinematic Grace Jones-ian afropunk and funk with an industrial, electronic edge that some compared to Nine Inch Nails.  Of course, being from Minneapolis, references to the purple one also came to the forefront. These influences were especially apparent in Dearling Physique’s attention grabbing video for the Deadeye Dealer single “Disciple Your Hands” which was featured by The Onion, OUT Magazine and others. The acclaim that followed helped earn the band recognition as Metromix’s “Artist To Watch” and as MTV Iggy’s “Artist of the Week.”

“Tracing The Alphabet Part 1” will be released on Friday, October 14th. The EP’s first single “Up All Night” is available for free download now. Domino Davis is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“Annie Crane plays fabulous folk with enough thoughtful twang to transport you back in time...” – Time Out New York

NYC-based singer-songwriter Annie Crane has completed the video for “Copenhagen Heart,” the latest single from her upcoming album Jump With A Child's Heart out on October 4th, 2011 from Constant Clip Records.  The video was directed by Jesse Miksic and shot along the water in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in Ridgewood, Queens and in the artist's own apartment where viewers can clearly see postcard reminders of Crane's touring to Copenhagen, Paris, Hamburg and Berlin.

It was at the beginning of this 2010 European tour that Crane wrote this song about feeling homesick and missing her man. “At the time, I had just been on vocal rest for the about four months and I was pretty rusty,” she says.

Crane had lost her voice for three months in 2008 and upon recovering, spent the next two years trying to fully rehabilitate it.  She saw multiple doctors and specialists during that time, one of which told her she wasn't “singing right,” about which the classically trained vocalist comments, “It was total horse shit. I know how to sing without harming myself.”

When Crane finally was able to get on a good health insurance plan (“People without health insurance get shoddy care and are treated differently than those with it”), determine the actual cause of the problem (“Just a sweet little case of acid reflux”) and recover, she still had to fight the nerves and self-doubt that went with using her voice again after a long time off.

“I was feeling self-conscious and like a fool and therefore homesick and missing my man,” she says candidly.  But Crane stayed on tour and put her feelings into a song that is one of many bright spots on her new album.  Perseverance is actually the main theme of Jump With A Child's Heart. The record weaves the reality of city life into tracks that combine the essence of classic 60’s folk, traditional Celtic music and rootsy Americana with Crane's optimistic messages about making dreams come true.

Jump With A Child's Heart will be released on October 4th, 2011 by Constant Clip Records. Annie Crane is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
