Tidelands is the duo of San Francisco’s Gabriel Montana Leis (Guitar, Flugelhorn, Vocals) and Mie Araki (Drums, Keyboards, Vocals).  On the duo’s upcoming debut album If..., Leis and Araki have teamed up with Magik*Magik Orchestra conductor Minna Choi and Deerhoof engineer Ian Pellicci to create an album of sharp, poetic lyrics uniquely arranged with looped guitars, Moog bass and beautiful harmonies.

“I found myself writing melodies that I knew were meant for a horn,” Leis says of the Tidelands material that began to take shape in 2009. “Never having played a horn before, I purchased a beautiful vintage Benge flugelhorn and began at the beginning,” Leis says of the decision to learn the horn from scratch on his own. Leis soon recruited Araki, a classically trained percussionist, who then added a Moog to her ensemble of instruments, essentially learning to play the drums and synth at the same time.

Further exploring his earlier experiences in other bands writing for cello, violin and trumpet, Leis began using a looping device to write guitar parts that he could later pair with orchestral instruments. Araki would then transcribe these ideas to standard musical notation and via a connection with musician John Vanderslice, Tidelands was introduced to Choi and her ensemble, the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

“We gave her the framework of the songs and the charts and the freedom to create around what we had already written,” Leis explains. Recording engineer Pellicci was the final collaborator added to the project, and less than six short but studious months into becoming a flugelhorn player, Leis, Araki, Choi and Pellicci convened at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone studios to create If...

If... will be released on July 26th, 2011Tidelands will perform a hometown show in San Francisco at Café du Nord that same evening. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“I urge you to give They Will Find You Here a listen. These self-described “swamp stalkers” have something truly special.” – The Owl Mag

Tampa, Florida’s Sleepy Vikings has landed on the cover of its hometown weekly, the venerable Creative Loafing newspaper, and this week was also featured on the cover of the pull-out section of the city’s daily paper, The Tampa Tribune.  The band has also been lovingly covered numerous times by the fine Tampa-based blog, The Ruckus.

All of this local love for Sleepy Vikings is not without merit – the band has made one of the most striking debut albums of 2011 with its They Will Find You Here.  Now Sleepy Vikings will debut its live show to cities along the East Coast with its first tour, set to launch June 8th and run through the remainder of the month. See below for dates.

For the uninitiated, the Creative Loafing cover story on Sleepy Vikings does a great job of illustrating the control and out-of-control that makes the band unique on the musical landscape and easily adored.  In the piece, the band talks about having to hurriedly finish writing a set of songs to play its first show ever – a chance opportunity in 2009 to open for the Vivian Girls.

The success of this risk led to an opportunity to perform in Canada at NXNE, a show they drove 26 hours to play in front of a half-dozen people. Turns out that half of that half were bloggers who loved the set, leading to an invite for Sleepy Vikings to perform in the Paste Magazine offices.

The new fans and new opportunities that will greet Sleepy Vikings on its upcoming tour are anyone’s guess, but the love for this band and its debut album They Will Find You Here is already apparent.

They Will Find You Here is out now via New Granada Records. Members of Sleepy Vikings are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Columbus, Ohio’s Red Wanting Blue has the distinction of working with a Grammy®-nominated producer (Jamie Candiloro, who is currently producing his second album with the band), a Tony®-nominated producer (Ken Davenport, who directed the feature documentary film about Red Wanting Blue), and now an Oscar®-nominated producer.

Red Wanting Blue was recently commissioned to write the original song “Magic Man” (STREAM) for the end title sequence of the upcoming documentary feature film, “Unraveled.” The film is co-produced by Oscar®-nominated producer Steven Cantor and is set to premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 17th with additional screenings on June 19th and 20th.

“Unraveled” profiles Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney, who, just days before Bernard Madoff captured headlines as the largest Ponzi schemer in U.S. history, was arrested (and later convicted) for orchestrating a massive fraud scheme that netted hundreds of millions of dollars from hedge funds. The film documents Dreier’s period of house arrest as he awaits sentencing, candidly confessing his crimes for the camera.

On the night of the “Unraveled” premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 17th, Red Wanting Blue will be on the other side of the US, headlining the Mercury Lounge in NYC.  This stop is part of a recently announced East coast run of dates for the band. This weekend, Red Wanting Blue will headline the House of Blues in Cleveland, a staple venue on its never ending tour schedule and one where the band’s growing legion of fans is at its strongest.

Red Wanting Blue will be previewing songs from its upcoming new studio album at these performances.  The as-yet-untitled album is scheduled for release in the Fall. Meanwhile, Red Wanting Blue continues to support its current These Magnificent Miles album, a record about the road – a subject Red Wanting Blue leader Scott Terry recently told a hilarious story about for NPRs Snap Judgment.

Red Wanting Blue’s latest album These Magnificent Miles is out now.  Scott Terry of Red Wanting Blue is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Oakland’s Tara Tati (performing as Metal Mother), is proving herself a formidable talent to contend with. In addition to her fantastic just-released debut album Bonfire Diaries, Tati has now produced, directed and styled “Shake,” the album’s first music video.  The clip for the latest Bonfire Diaries single is a stunning visual experience sure to take Metal Mother (who also happened to release the album on her own Post Primal label) even further.

“The video for ‘Shake’ tells a story of an annihilation of the oppression that modern culture lays upon us,” Tati explains. Photographed and edited by Galen Oakes and Nelson Brazil of Manifest Media, “Shake” is a visually memorable and emotionally gripping video complete with alien women, smoky rooms, old buildings, gooey elixirs and the beautiful Tati herself, roaming through a dense rainforest.  It’s just the kind of video one would expect and hope for from this emerging, unique artist.

Hailing from the edge of familiarity, singer-soundmaker Metal Mother developed Bonfire Diaries with nearly a dozen musical madmen, including Tommy Cappell of Beats Antique and Micha Grainger of The Yard Dogs Road Show.  The 11 songs on Bonfire Diaries were mixed by Jeremy Black of Apollo Sunshine. Metal Mother will play the Lightning In A Bottle Festival with Pretty Lights, Thievery Corporation and more on May 27th at the Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado, California. A west coast tour will be announced shortly.

Brooklyn-based foursome The Shondes has been hard at work on its upcoming third album (and second for Fanatic Records) and is now ready to announce that the record has a title.

Searchlights is a sing-along rock record for late nights at Coney Island, blowing off steam and saying goodbye to people who hold you back,” says vocalist Louisa Solomon about the album.  Drummer Temim Fruchter adds, “We’ve had Bruce Springsteen and Pat Benatar in our headphones for months now. These songs are in the spirit of that kind of roll-down-the-windows rock.”

Scheduled for a Fall 2011 release, Searchlights follows an emotional roller coaster of a year for The Shondes during which band member Elijah Oberman was diagnosed with and successfully treated for cancer, an inaugural European tour had to be cancelled, and the band’s van was stolen.  $11,000 in Kickstarter donations later, The Shondes is still kicking adversity’s ass and staying focused on the band’s bigger concerns.

The Shondes has long been known as a band that melds politics with music, notably as Jews for a free Palestine and fighters for queer rights. In a show of support for Planned Parenthood, the band will headline a benefit for the organization at Brooklyn’s Death By Audio on May 25th and another in Baltimore at Area 405 on June 11th.

“In a time when accessible, affordable sexual and reproductive health care is under attack, it means a lot to us to be able to support Planned Parenthood,” Solomon explains. “I don’t think I know a single person who hasn’t benefited in some way – directly or indirectly – from their vital services, education and advocacy work.”

Solomon and Fruchter get into more detail about politics, the new album and their affinity for putting on mock Jewish grandmother voices in a recent interview with Moment (referred to by its readers as the “Jewish New Yorker”), the Jewish culture publication co-founded by Elie Wiesel in 1975.  Read the full interview here.

The Shondes “Lines & Hooks + 3” EP is out now.  The title track can also be found on the band’s My Dear One album.  Look for Searchlights, the third album by The Shondes, this Fall.
