About Metal Mother

The bay area’s burgeoning dark folk phenomenon, Metal Mother, will release her first full-length album, Bonfire Diaries, on March 7th, 2011 led by the single “Billy Cruz” (MP3) on January 11^th. Metal Mother visionary Tara Tati drew inspiration for the Bonfire Diaries album from her travels on the backroads of the US, in the deserts of Mexico, and in the Amazon jungle.

Invoking fervent emotion from these experiences, woven together with catchy melodies and alluring lyrical themes of revolution and urban romance, Bonfire Diaries incorporates an experimental mixture of electronic and live world drums and percussion to form a booming and trance-evoking foundation for Tati’s haunting, celtic-inspired vocals.

A California native, Tati first introduced herself to music-making in 2004 after taking a job organizing a vaudeville stage called the Calliope Wondershow, at the annual Harmony Festival, in Santa Rosa, California. Coming off of a long journey of travel, activism, and neo-tribal lifestyle, Tati was studying botany and permaculture when she inherited her first keyboard.

Tati has been deeply influenced and swept away by various underground scenes from a young age. 1960’s underdog bands such as The Velvet Underground and The Grateful Dead, post-punk artists such as The Talking Heads and Kate Bush, the mid-nineties San Francisco rave scene, the rowdy and intricate arrangements of Eastern European gypsy music, and finally by a growing understanding of ethnic and tribal rhythms and traditions.

Other than music, her inspirations include the literature of Anais Nin, her relationships with plants and animals, the films of Jean-Pierre Jeanet, and the works of photographer Jean-Paul Goude. The one quality that has tied together all of her inspirations is a fervent desire for spiritual revolution, which, is the core message and undertone of the Bonfire Diaries album.

Since hurricane Katrina ravaged the gulf coast in late August of 2005, Steven Stubblefield has been working on a new Starlings, TN record. “That storm was like a bad acid trip,” Stubblefield says. “It lasted as nearly as long too. It was eight hours of chaos that left years destruction in its wake.”

With more than $10,000 worth of damage to his home from Katrina, Stubblefield spent the next three years helping others recover from the storm. He worked for the first ten months in Biloxi, MS with the humanitarian organization, Samaritan’s Purse. But, when a job working for the American Red Cross opened up in his home town of Hattiesburg, MS, he made the move back home.

“I enjoyed the time I was in Biloxi and will never forget the things I saw, heard, and the people I met while I was there. There were many precious moments,” Stubblefield says. When Katrina blew in I had already begun recording the ‘next album.’ I lost the hard drive I had been recording to during the storm and when I discovered several instruments were also lost, I was devastated.”

Stubblefield, who had been exposed to gospel music in his Baptist minister grandfather’s church, drew inspiration from listening to the archival albums of renowned folk collector Alan Lomax and from meeting noted dulcimer player David Schnaufer (Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jr.). Stubblefield eventually came upon the sound he wanted when he bought a dulcimer and took lessons on the instrument from Schnaufer.

Over time, these instruments and hard drives were replaced and in early 2009 the bug struck and Stubblefield began writing and recording once again. “I’m really proud of the way How Dark It Is Before The Dawn came out as finished album. It was a tough record to make. I went through a lot during the time I spent making this record and am looking forward to brighter days.”

More About Carol Bui

Tacoma, Washington’s Carol Bui took up drums and Middle Eastern dance over the years since her last album, and these new pursuits play vital roles on Bui’s upcoming third record Red Ship. The album is set for release on March 8^th, 2011 on Bui’s own Ex Oh Records and while she has yet to be approached to blog about Middle Eastern Dance, Bui recently discussed being a new percussionist with Modern Drummer HERE.

Like Red Ship’s lead single “Mira: You’re Free With Me” released last November, the new track “‘Geisha’ Means ‘Open-minded’” is a festive, fiery blend of celebratory Middle Eastern and North African percussion coupled with progressive pop melodic tendencies. My Old Kentucky Blog debuted the new song today HERE previously proclaimed Bui’s last album the completion of the rock trifecta that also includes Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyille and PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me.

The provocative content, lush production (once again by TJ Lipple of Aloha and Bui herself), and unique arrangements demonstrate what Bui chooses to term “the primitive means of expressing joy.”  She explains by asking, “What did people do to make music and express happiness back when there weren’t sophisticated instruments around? They hit things! And sang! And danced! This record is to invoke that spirit.”
