The Clutters In The Press

The Clutters have a loose notion of place and time -- with a push and punch back-dated to Fifties Memphis and Hamburg’s Star Club in the mid-Sixties.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone

“The music has a fearless, untamed energy that shames most of their too–cool–for–rock–school, retro contemporaries.” – David Browne, Blender

“Most impressive is the sense one gets that this band is simply doing what it wants to do...” – Cameron Lawrence, Paste Magazine

“They’re simply the band you wished were playing your bash. Intuitive with the handclaps, messy with the cymbals and clockwise with the volume knobs.” – CMJ

The Clutters clearly revel in making fun, rebellious and catchy rock songs.” – Lily Percy, NPR

About The Clutters

Nashville-based band, The Clutters, will release its third album of pure, unmitigated rock n’ roll fury on May 10th. Breaking Bones arrives on the heels of the band’s critically praised second full-length, Don’t Believe A Word. The album is preceded by the single “Under Suspicion” (MP3) which will be available as a limited edition 7-inch at mom and pop stores nationwide on Record Store Day 2011, April 16th.

Ten years ago, when The Clutters first exploded onto the Nashville scene, there was a lot of head scratching. So this is rock n’ roll, eh?  When the band’s debut album hit, the record pretty much exploded the “rock free Music City” myth and now, ten years after the genesis of The Clutters and on the eve of  their third album, Breaking Bones, Nashville has become an epicenter for the rawest of rock n roll. Coincidence? Probably not. The Clutters might not take credit for the path they blazed, but they blazed it none the less.

Breaking Bones finds The Clutters – vocalist/guitarist Doug Lehmann, bass player Jake Rosswog, drummer Stephanie Brush and keyboardist Andrew Higley – raising the bar for rock n’ roll once again with twelve tracks that land somewhere between Vanilla Fudge and The Voidoids, AC/DC and The Animals. The Clutters barrel through the rock pantheon with a punk rock propulsion and the belligerence of Bon Scott on Breaking Bones, leaving no ass un-shook and no fist un-pimped.

These are anthems for an unemployed, unloved and unsatisfied America. No concessions are made to decorum, no acknowledgment made of the delicate sensibilities that have sucked the fun out independent music over the last decade. This is hyphen-free rock n roll – all energy, no bullshit.  The new The Clutters album Breaking Bones will be released by Chicken Ranch Records on May 10th, 2011.

Members of The Clutters are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

About The Shimmies

Northern California band The Shimmies has received some rightful praise for its debut album To All Beloved Enemies and now the album’s first single “Judas” (MP3 | VIDEO) has an equally praiseworthy video to go along with it.  Directed by Brandon Vedder, who has previously helmed clips for Pearl Jam and Sleater-Kinney among others, the seven-minute clip for “Judas” will be featured at this weekend’s LA Film + Music Weekend in Beverly Hills.  Watch the “Judas” video now at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQHlmHff0vA.

Still maturing from a childhood project that combined brothers Sean and Jimmy Galloway’s first names, The Shimmies has created a self-appointed genre for itself, lovingly referred to as “home school rock.” Much in the way a home schooled child’s take on a book may have less to do with the collective opinion of their peers, so does The Shimmies’ take on pop music stand apart from the collective pretense of our generation.

The Galloway brothers started out in the late 90’s as an acoustic two piece, and before that as kids trying to perfect difficult harmonies by panning Simon and Garfunkel’s Wednesday Morning 3AM on their small cassette deck boom box. They’ve since plugged in and added younger brother Stephen on bass and long time friend Jack Gingerich on drums. The Shimmies’ music has come a long way since the band’s inception, but its defining characteristic remains angelic harmonies from its two front men, vocals that give The Shimmies a truly magical quality that garners sonic comparisons to the likes of Band of Horses, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros.

To All Beloved Enemies, the debut album by The Shimmies is out now. The band is available for interviews.  Contact Corey Gingerich at Fanatic for more information.

See Sunshine Factory live at Origami Vinyl this Saturday March 26th in Echo Park!

Like just about every great song, the dreamy pop songs of suburban Los Angeles, California band Sunshine Factory radiate in a stripped down acoustic setting.  For the band’s follow-up to its debut 7-inch, Sunshine Factory’s Corey Judge sat down at the grand piano donated in the 1960’s to KPFK radio in Holywood to (softly) bang out versions of Sunshine Factory tunes.  This new take on “Lower Away” (MP3 | VIDEO) deftly displays the songwriting skills the band is becoming known for.

Sunshine Factory’s Unplugged & Remixed is a limited edition tour only EP only available at live shows. For the next week only, the band is making the entire EP available as a free download via its label, Culdesac Kids.  In addition to the acoustic versions of “Lower Away” and “Faux Real,” the EP features a “Lower Away” remix by Chloroform Days and two additional “almost live” tracks recorded during a sound check in Pasadena.

Sunshine Factory is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Hyderabad” is the first single from the upcoming Clara May album, Hush

About Clara May

Clara May is Tom Silva, a Malaysian-born filmmaker, and Nicole Sotelo, a Harvard-trained theologian and author, who together write songs that are at once dark, romantic, reflective and emotional, but also come with a social message.  The duo’s debut album Hush (recorded at Chicago’s legendary Rax Trax Studios by Phillip Amerson) explores themes rarely addressed by mainstream music such as the war in Iraq, the genocide in the Congo, colonialism, and cultural identity.

Race issues are addressed on the first single from HushHyderabad (MP3). Silva wrote the multi-part song (think “Band On The Run” or “Bohemian Rhapsody”) in a historic Muslim city that is equal parts Indian and Persian.  He explains that “The song is about standing in sacred spaces on the other side of the world – the mosques and the temples – and feeling the humanity of the people around me. The song is a call to return to our innocence and to realize we are a single race.”

Silva and Sotelo are joined by some of Chicago’s finest session players on Hush, helping to coalesce a sound made of many musical styles.  The album finds the group exploring pure folk, grunge, pop, British post-punk, alt-country, romantic ballads and brooding guitar numbers. “We wanted to use our combined Indian, Malaysian, Mexican, Chilean, and European backgrounds to create a new kind of American sound,” says Sotelo.

Further adding to Hush’s cultural and music diversity is the classical guitar work of Barmey Ung, a Cambodian-American composer who has studied Flamenco guitar in Spain. On Hammond B3 Organ and keyboards is Marcus Smith, a professional church organist with an extensive background in liturgical, gospel and jazz. The album’s producer Amerson also plays lead guitar on Hush and can further be found performing with his hard-rock band, Bitterson. Rounding out the Hush band is Michael Sinclair on bass and drummer & percussionist, Nate Pusateri.

Both Silva and Sotelo also bring the experiences gained through their other personal projects to bear in Clara MaySilva’s work as a filmmaker was honored with the “Best Independent Film” award from Chicago Screen Magazine for his feature “The Quiet,” which premiered at the Art Institute of Chicago. Sotelo is leader at the nation’s largest church justice organization and writes and speaks nationally on issues of equality.  She is also the author of “Women Healing from Abuse: Meditations for Finding Peace” (Paulist Press) and leads workshops and retreats for Christian women healing from abuse.

In keeping with Clara May’s dedication to social consciousness, the band will dedicate 10% of its profits to charity. Hush will be released on April 19th, 2011.

About John Brodeur and Tiger Pop Ten

New York musician John Brodeur has launched a major nationwide tour in support of his upcoming Tiger Pop Ten double CD, a set that includes the now out-of-print, critically adored 2001 album Tiger Pop along with an all new, full band re-make of the album, appropriately titled Tiger Pop Ten.

The new CD also includes a band new track, “Masterpiece” (MP3). The song displays Brodeur’s greatest strengths, easily and breezily showing off why his tunes have earned such praise over the years. This addition to Tiger Pop Ten was written just as the original album was completed.

To kick off the Tiger Pop Ten tour (which includes more than a half-dozen performances at next week’s SXSW festival), Brodeur performed the album track “Confidentially” on Philadelphia’s NBC-TV morning program “The 10! Show.”  See the performance here: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/shows/10-show/John_Brodeur_Performs_Philadelphia-117425638.html.

Tiger Pop Ten is a celebration of the relationships that went into it – something we can all share as a reminder of our time together,” Brodeur says of the collaborative nature of the new version. “Without road maps – the original Tiger Pop sessions were quite carefully plotted – the songs found their own identities. They’re still part of my DNA, but they’ve also become their own beings.”

See below for tour dates.  John Brodeur is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“These guys sounded so good that they cut through the din of South By Southwest from 100 yards away...” – Wired

“We wanted to perform on the streets of Nashville just like so many Nashville musicians before us. We just did the video for fun. We went downtown and did a few takes,” says We Were The States guitarist J Stoyanov.

In anticipation of releasing “Hot Waves,” the latest single from the band’s sophomore album Rasa, We Were The States (minus drummer Tyler Coppage) shot this late night acoustic version of the tune out in public, later editing in split screens for that “Woodstock” documentary effect. The result is a powerful and emotionally raw take on the tune that shows off singer Justin Webb’s distinctive style.

See the “Hot Waves”video here: http://www.vimeo.com/wewerethestates/hotwaves.

We Were The States had nearly completed the recording of its new album Rasa when the Nashville floods came. With two feet of water in the basement of their studio, the band thought the record they had worked on for two years would be indefinitely derailed. Regrouping in Nashville, the Murfreesboro-based five-piece spent long hours on a very limited budget to finish Rasa, which is now out on Austin’s Chicken Ranch label.
