In 2009, a European group with a danceable sound took America by storm. The lyrics were romantic, the synthesizers were bright, and the guitars shimmered. The music was at the intersection of sound and style, and once it reached these shores, it was unstoppable. We’re talking about Phoenix, but next year we might be saying the same things about the Lisbon, Portugal-based band, Blasfemea. These four talented Portuguese musicians -- Tiago Amaro, Fabio Jevelim (vocals and guitars) & the Lourenço brothers (David and Rui on drums and bass) -- are the darlings of the Lisbon pop underground and now they're ready to make their mark in the United States.

Consider Maria, the first single and video from the new Blasfemea album, Galaxia Tropicalia. It’s a swirl of oscillating synth, angular guitar, irresistible beats, pop sweetness and punk attitude -- it’s a welcome blast of heat from sunny Portugal and, like all the tracks on Blasfemea’s gripping debut, it’s named after a girl. Blasfemea’s casual confidence is also apparent in every frame of David Francisco and Maria João Carvalho’s vibrant video for “Maria,” too as Blasfemea are naturals in front of the camera -- good-looking, sharply-dressed, and looking the part of international pop stars.

“Heaven” Maxi Single

+++

“Heaven” is the new maxi-single and video from “Can’t Stop Not Knowing”, the current EP by Milwaukee-band, The New Loud. The track listing for the release features the single version of “Heaven” (MP3) mixed by Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World , Rilo Kiley, Drive Like Jehu) alongside remixes by dub legend Mad Professor (MP3). “Heaven” is available now digitally and as a limited edition clear vinyl 12-inch available exclusively through the band’s webstore HERE.

A video for “Heaven” has also been released (VIDEO), and continues The New Loud’s collaboration with director / “Funny or Die” writer and producer, Jack Packard. In the video for “Heaven”, The New Loud literally gets face to face with the viewer. Through use of slow-motion long portraits, Packard takes his subjects past the point of their ‘camera faces’ in order to find true expression and real emotion. Shot on location throughout Milwaukee and Chicago, the video assembles a cast of fellow musicians, local actors as well as some of the band’s friends and fans. Live band footage was shot at Milwaukee’s historic Turner Hall Ballroom. Look out for The New Loud’s full-length album, Measures Melt, coming this summer.

The Gary In The Press

“5 Austin bands to catch up to in 2010... Maybe it’s just a matter of it still being relatively obscure, but when The Gary unfurls its maudlin, steely-eyed, drinking-class woes over brittle shards of distorted guitar, it’s somehow easier to believe.” - The Onion AV Club

“There’s more substance to be found in these seven songs than most double-LP concept albums...Intelligent, honest, unpretentious, stirring, grassroots indie rock like this doesn’t come along as often as PR reps would like to have us think.” - Ink 19

More About The Gary

In 2009, Austin TX trio The Gary made waves with their debut EP, which produced the sleeper hit “Damn Machines” and six other songs of blue-collar angst and disillusionment. 2010 brings the arrival of their full-length album Logan, ten songs of “Minutemen-esque brevity and wit” that raises the bar, though maintains the aesthetic, of their Chub EP. It’s been speculated that The Gary’s sound is the antithesis of much of today’s over-achieving indie rock scene, hearkening back to a sincere and direct approach that is sometimes lost on the gadgetry and vague delivery often found in current musical trends.

The band simply believes they are following their noses, as well as honoring their influences. Peruse through their record collections, and you’re sure to find albums by Husker Du, Silkworm, Mission Of Burma, Archers Of Loaf, Squirrel Bait, Sonic Youth, GBV, among many with the Touch & Go and Dischord imprint. Logan is The Gary’s second release on the Austin, TX label Cedar Fever Records. They will be playing in Texas and touring the midwest throughout Spring/Summer 2010. Personnel: Dave Norwood - bass & vocals / Trey Pool - guitar / Paul Warner - drums.

The Frontier Brothers sound exactly like what would happen if The Flaming Lips smashed Brandon Flowers in the face: awesome.” - Austin Sound

The Frontier Brothers have had an incredible February, playing a sold out show at the Webster Hall studio in NYC, and wrapping up the recording of a new EP, You Should Start A Band. The video for the title track finds a posse of drunk and inconsiderate bears partying their way to a Frontier Brothers underground concert. Do you like bears? Then see HERE. And now, with South by Southwest upon us, The Frontier Brothers are rocking Austin all week.

Though the Austin-based quartet remains holed up putting the finishing touches on their next studio release, their new single is already getting attention. After the group debuted “You Should Start A Band” at their CMJ showcase in New York, legendary DJ Matt Pinfield immediately picked up the party-punk anthem to feature on the NYC rock station 101.9 RXP.

Of course, The Frontier Brothers are no strangers to attention. The dynamic rockers have been critical favorites since the release of their sharply crafted cinematic debut, Space Punk Starlet in 2008. Writing for Paste Magazine, Andy Whitman listed the album among his favorites for 2008. Spin Magazine tuned in as well, featuring the band in the June, 2008 South by Southwest feature, “Bands on the Run.”

Amid this sea of attention, The Frontier Brothers don’t care, they’re just here to kick ass. Eccentric, tight, and aggressively brilliant, The Frontier Brothers are drunk on Pavement, Bowie, and Davies or as the Houston Chronicle proclaims, “The Frontier Brothers are something I have never quite heard before, a punky sort of rock that isn’t afraid to dress up with some Bacharachian fussiness.”

THE SHONDES announce US tour in support of “My Dear One” out May 4th, 2010. Tour kick-off show at Southpaw, April 10th.

Village Voice’s Chris Weingarten calls the band’s single “Make It Beautiful” the “Newest Lonely Hearts Epic” – Grab it HERE.

+++

Seems South by Southwest turned the members of THE SHONDES – from L-R: Louisa Solomon (bass, lead vocals), Temim Fruchter (drums), guitarist Fureigh, and Elijah Oberman (violin) – into crazy people by the looks of the photo at left. No matter – it’s the perfect state of mind for embarking on a tour. “Old-world romance elegantly intertwined with riot grrrl piss and vinegar...,” says Venus and fans can expect both on the “Heartbreak Tour” that begins with a tour kick-off show at Brooklyn’s Southpaw on April 10th where the band has previously drawn capacity crowds.

Copies of THE SHONDES upcoming sophomore album My Dear One will be available for sale at the show ahead of the album’s national release date of May 4th, 2010 on Fanatic Records via EMI/Caroline. In addition to making political art and melding influences as disparate as classical and traditional Jewish music and punk rock, THE SHONDES work for justice on many public levels, including in queer communities and as Jews fighting for a free Palestine.

As the band’s upcoming My Dear One is actually a break-up album, it serves as a more personal reminder that those who fight for what they feel passionately about still suffer heartbreak. See below for tour dates and check out “Make It Beautiful”, the first single from My Dear One via the links below. The track was recently written about by Chris Weingarten in the Village Voice who called it the “Newest Lonely Hearts Epic.” Check out the full article and interview HERE. Also available, an album and single trailer featuring THE SHONDES prior to being rattled by Austin, Texas!

JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND
DAMNANT QUOD NON INTELLIGUNT
(Ah Ritualism)
Release Date: April 27th, 2010

MP3:DO NOT THE CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN!?

+++

ABOUT:

Hailing from the heart of Southern California’s desert wasteland, JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND brings their apocalyptic message to mass attention by any means necessary. Influenced by the likes of radio host Art Bell, Robert Anton Wilson, Teddy and Terry Riley (no relation), JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND merges noisy synths, discordant guitars, and percussive machinery with the precision and transcendence of dark ritual.

JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND formed in 2004 with multi-instrumentalist Ramiro Zapata and drum machine Adrian Laguna. After six years, over 500 shows, and a revolving cast of their friends and cultist-like followers, maximalist Lvis Pe Rez and sound conjurer Sergio Camarena balanced the scales. Collectively, JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND taps into the kind of desperation born of Southern California: vapid consumerism, gang violence and social apathy. The sweeping vision of these young men is to create music that challenges the expectation of the listener, leaving one with the sort of uneasiness usually reserved for personal epiphany or witness to a violent crime.

JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND’s debut EP DAMNANT QUOD NON INTELLIGUNT carries a distinct aesthetic rooted in the ethos and imagery of the film “Koyaanisqatsi,” which translates into “Life Out of Balance.” The clash of humanity versus nature, the organic vs. synthetic, order into chaos, such is the music of JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND.

East meets west on the exotic garage blues of Baltimore's Primal Static.

Chinese bassist/keyboardist, HouFei Yang, and American acid garage guitarist, Greg Thuman, offer up first single, "Waking Shadows."

In a word: Innovative.
+++

You hear a lot of bands talk about how they are trying to break the mold of the music industry and are providing listeners with music that is really something unique and different. But how many of them are actually doing what they say? Listening to Primal Static's The Curtain Of Many Faces, the duo of Greg Thuman and HouFei Yang create songs that combine blues-rock and trance dance beats and give you something completely different with each track on the album. It's blues guitar-meets-Fruit Loops, and if you were on the hunt for something new, look no further than Primal Static.

"Love Drone" gives you a taste of the blues, yet the very next track, "Dream Arabic," really shows off what Thuman does with his sound manipulation talents. It is like an electro-jam where the guitar provides an infectious melody, and the beats hold the song down and your interest as well. Songs like "Shelter" provide blues vocals over guitar swells, a mandolin solo and sweet beats really showing off what Primal Static is about. It's a trippy combination any band has yet to make, which is what makes Thuman and Yang true innovators in the music world.

+++

" Thuman leads Primal Static with his raw vocals, blues guitar and love of dance beats, while Yang accompanies him on keyboard and bass. Yang, who lived in China until she came to the U.S. at age 18, is a classically trained pianist who shows off her skills on "Enimia," where the piano creates the bass line for the song. Thuman and Yang stick to anything but a classical approach to things. They have a novel method of creating new music with their combination of sounds that makes them stand out from any other band in the music scene today. Each track on The Curtain Of Many Faces stands out for the sheer fact each one is different from the next making the album one that should stand out in the indie music world."

Praise already received for Rykarda Parasol’s For Blood and Wine:

“You should listen to Rykarda Parasol if you don’t already. This is gorgeous, gothy, dark, sensual stuff...” – Crawdaddy.com

“Her music owes much to Nick Cave, but while he is grotesque and gothy, like some erudite, cave-dwelling mutant, Parasol’s more a precious vixen -- an inhumanly elegant entity that emerges from an ice palace each sunset, poured into a smoky evening gown, ready to wield her piercing stare in the service of some unsavory end..” – San Francisco Weekly

“...Rykarda Parasol is at once raw and earnest, sensual and callous with just enough wit and wry humor to make it all go down sweet and easy. For Blood and Wine is an intoxicating swig of bitters and a trace of lipstick on a stubbled cheek.” – The Big Takeover

Release Date: Out Now

+++

Born of a holocaust orphan and distant Swedish royalty, Rykarda Parasol uses her life story and a love of literature to craft music that is vacuously dark while simultaneously a celebration of life and its vices.

With a voice and lyrics compared to the likes of a female Nick Cave, and drawing influence from The Doors, Serge Gainsbourg, and Oscar Wilde, Parasol describes her music as “rock noir,” evoking moody cinema drenched in gin and white-collar crime. Parasol’s nature is strong, her prose is starkly sincere, and she could drink Tom Waits under the table.

Parasol’s new self-produced album For Blood and Wine is a true-life narrative depicting the progress and downward spiral of a rake, which in this case is female. “It’s witty, darkly romantic, edgy and elegant… It’s tales of infidelity, addiction, and death. Mostly sad, but some real moments of joy and hope,” Parasol states.

“…it's the simple, startling vulnerability of ‘Be My Friend Always’ that could make Foster a contender for the This Generation's Laura Nyro title…” – Mary Leary, San Diego Reader

Houston native Sarah Elizabeth Foster began studying music at the age of four. A classically trained vocalist, pianist and ballerina, she grew up performing in church and school choirs, winning numerous awards. But along the way, Sarah found it was other genres of music that truly inspired her. After perfecting her vocal technique with a degree in music, singing in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, Sarah embarked on extensive travels throughout Asia and Europe expanding her cultural horizons. All this being an irrepressible quest to turn towards the music that inspired her and to fulfill her ultimate dream of a life as a singer/songwriter in New York City. Where now, for the first time, Sarah unearths words and melodies that are all her own.

See Sarah Elizabeth Foster performing live at the American Folk Art Museum in NYC (45 W 53rd St, btw 5th and 6th) on April 16th, 2010.

Gardening From The Ground Up Part 1 is Sarah’s first collection of deeply charged tunes. Filled with raw emotion and wistful reflection, the record hints liberally at Sarah’s stated influences which are rare for a singer-songwriter (Dusty Springfield, Sam Cooke, Judy Garland, and Edith Piaf) and her exceptionally broad vocal range -- moving effortlessly from crystal clear purity to shuttering vibrato -- places her in a league with contemporaries such as Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor, Norah Jones and Feist. The record is an unusual acoustic blend of 60‘s-inspired pop, fresh folk and classical motifs wrapped around Sarah’s deep, pure vocals and emotionally rich, informed lyrics.
