Garden Gate Records (Apples In Stereo) set to release latest album of danceable hits, and electric light harmonies by Lexington, Kentucky's Big Fresh.

Grab the bouncy first single “W.L.U.V” right now, right HERE.

The glow on the horizon grows brighter until... the UFO is outside your window. Bending circuits, plastic travelers wave from within. If they are singing, invite them into your room. Big Fresh comes from beyond, bearing bright gifts on Garden Gate Records, the newly launched label by Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo.

Lexington, Kentucky's beloved pop superheroes have been hard at work in the laboratory since Yes, Nice, Please, Thanks (2001, Aquapop Records) electrified the regional college radio airwaves. Their U.S. tour last year opening for The Apples in Stereo broadcast their pop manifesto to head-bopping masses, disseminating a 150-copy limited pressing of their newly completed album.

Who are they? Artists, filmmakers, electronic experimentalists. Two compose screenplays. One composes songs that sound like science fiction. One grew up steeped in psychedelia, his father and home-recording legend R. Stevie Moore creating magic in their band Goods and other groups. But that is water. What is ice is that they have produced a very cool record, B.F.F.(Big Fresh Forever): crystalline pop rainbows beamed through a prism.

B.F.F.(Big Fresh Forever) is an ambitious tapestry of danceable hits, bubbling soundscapes, electric light harmonies and synthetic orchestrations: alternately gorgeous and playful. Produced by Big Fresh in their home environment and mastered by Robert Schneider (The Apples in Stereo, Elephant 6), this shining album will transport you to another world.

For the purpose of concluding our propaganda with informative content, we interviewed the group in a controlled environment, and transcribed their terse responses below:

New Album: “We've been working on it for the past seven years. We have lots of recordings that didn't make the cut. We felt it was important to release something short and tight.”

History: “We've been a band for 10 years. Our first band name was Meat Tape.”

Other Projects: “John plays in The Apples in stereo. Ben and John both play in Ulysses with Robert Schneider. Danny and John play in Deek Hoi. Jeremy plays in Joybombs. Dave is in Club Dub.”

“Dancethink” music makers My Dear Disco remix Kanye West and Franz Ferdinand amid press props and continued touring.

Grammy-nominated Shiny Toy Guns, Cure, Tricky knob-turner Mark Saunders turns out band’s latest for fans of VHS or Beta, Donna Summer, and Devo.

“...those with a taste for dance-rock inspired by 1980s sounds and heavy synths, take note.” – XLR8R.com

My Dear Disco is a force to be reckoned with! I hope any follow-up to their Dancethink LP is as grossly enjoyable and engaging. A feat these days, to make something this good. I want more!” – about.com

“...chock full of deliciously smooth, synth-laden beats designed to send listeners swirling and whirling about on the dance floor.” – My Old Kentucky Blog

Emerging from the Ann Arbor suburb of Detroit, My Dear Disco has been cutting a path throughout the Midwest with its addictive self-branded style of “danethink” music which displays influences from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Daft Punk and Tom Waits. The band has kept busy in the studio as well, recently producing remixes of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” (MP3) and Franz Ferdinand’s “Ulysses” (MP3) that incorporate the band’s live instrumentation into each tune’s original tracks.

Known for its distinctive, “Dancethink Music,” My Dear Disco’s debut album Dancethink LP (watch the trailer HERE) has met with much critical acclaim since its release and the band’s unique sound and style has begun to make waves nationwide. The album features mixes by Grammy-nominated engineer Mark Saunders and his multi-platinum record generating studio in New York, the same people responsible for the sound of Shiny Toy GunsWe Are Pilots, Tricky’s Maxinquaye, David Byrne’s Feelings, and The Cure’s Wish. Additionally, the band’s high energy, inventive live shows have been generating hard-fought praise all their own (see the band perform “White Lies” LIVE.)

In 2008, My Dear Disco was named one of the most promising bands in the country by American Eagle’s “New Music Union” and was invited to perform at the American Eagle Summer Festival, curated by Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers. This resulted in a fully-stocked summer 2008 festival schedule where the band performed alongside artists such as Lotus, Moe, Buckethead, and Bela Fleck. My Dear Disco continues on the road and will hit the festival circuit once again in the summer of 2009, in full-flight, following its “Dancethink Music,” wherever it takes them.

Hooked on Zodiac Dust? Loop 2.4.3 to release landmark album of rhythmic, orchestral experimentation hinting at Steve Reich, Konono No.1, Brian Eno.

“Reinvents percussion...” – Fresh Air, NPR

Zodiac Dust -- the name sounds like an addictive new substance that all the kids are taking. Perhaps it soon will be. For now, Zodiac Dust is a fittingly daze-inducing and awe-inspiring work of musical experimentation by Brooklyn duo Loop 2.4.3 that merges myriad elements of classical, jazz, rock and many other world musics. Loop 2.4.3 employs the gamut of percussion instruments, from marimba and steel drum to tom-toms, bongos and snare drums, temple bowls and wood blocks, opera gongs and electronics.

Its music has been described as “transportive percussion odysseys,” (The Boston Phoenix) “taut compositions with a stunning improvisational sense,” (Time Out Chicago) and as containing of both “action adventures and reveries... all sound[ing] like part of a well-thought-out tradition, only the tradition has never existed until now.” (NPR Fresh Air)

In the tradition of sonic innovators like Steve Reich, Konono N°1, Mike Oldfield and Brian Eno, Loop 2.4.3’s new album flows through a vast array of sounds and rhythms across the nine tracks on Zodiac Dust. From edgy to impressionistic, classical to experimental, the music of Loop 2.4.3 takes the audience on “a really focused and thrilling percussive ride,” creating vibrant contemporary music that is “enrapturing and truly alive indeed.” (NewNoise.net)

Hailing from Michigan and arriving in Brooklyn via New Haven and Seattle, Loop 2.4.3 has spent the last five years alternately traveling and working in a Bed-Stuy loft space, focused on writing, improvising and creating their own style. They were exclusively a live act until the release of their debut CD, Batterie, on the Brooklyn label, Music Starts From Silence (MSFS) in the fall of 2007. Batterie was captured in a one-hour session for Sonarchy Radio in Seattle, WA. Upon hearing Doug Haire’s radio show, the group asked if they could release it as a CD. There was NO EDITING of any kind on the recording (other than removing the voice announcements in between tracks). Their new album, Zodiac Dust, is more varied, with tighter compositions, and a more cohesive dramatic flow throughout the entire album. The group introduces two new instruments, the eLog and Rose Echo, and utilizes cello, violin, piano, and voice, along with their standard barrage of percussion. (bio continued below)

Nite Club’s Richard Spitzer brings an education in prog rock, punk, live drum n’ bass and classical composition to My Tronic.

Check the single and video for “No Matter Which Way” (MP3 VIDEO) as well as Nite Club’s reinterpretation of Kanye’s “Good Life” (MP3).

Nite Club is the project of multi instrumentalist Richard Spitzer. Born into a Orthodox Jewish / Cuban family, music was a natural part of daily life. Either the salsa and mambo infused family parties or the introspective soulful prayer at the ultra Orthodox Hebrew Temple. Diversity in music was Spitzer’s calling since he was little.

Spitzer started performing at rave events at 16-years-old. He blossomed as a player with prog rock, punk and live drum n’ bass groups using modern classical composition as his backdrop. Spitzer then pursued a music education in college where he was composition classmates with electronic artist Dan Deacon.

Spitzer has performed across the US, Europe and Japan opening for The Rapture, The Roots, Jamie Lidell, Lightning Bolt, DJ Oscar G, DJ DB, Kool Keith, and The Locust. Spitzer has also performed at major international superclubs such as Crobar, Avalon, and Spirit.

Currently, Spitzer enjoys collaborations and remix projects with his Japanese extend musical family including of members of j-hip-hop group SBK and the first nu rave / minimal techno band from Japan, The Samos.

Showcased in the live setting Nite Club becomes a collaboration with Osbourne (Ghostly International) drummer Steve Bryant. Their combined background of live jungle, indie rock and hip hop makes for a upbeat and dreamy atmosphere reminiscent of early 90’s UK rave scene.

Manipulating all kinds of instruments Spitzer’s experiences come together with Nite Club. While having the New York night life as his backdrop he creates a beautiful project that shines in the night sky.

Wooden Wand leader James Jackson Toth returns under vaguely familiar name, issues new album via Ecstatic Peace and launches supergroup The Jescos.

Lead track,
“Arriving” available HERE.

The highly prolific artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Wooden Wand, James Jackson Toth has announced the release of not one, but two releases under the name WAND for early 2009. As if that weren’t enough, Toth has also just completed work in the studio (entertainingly blogged about HERE with a brand new supergroup of sorts called The Jescos. The new band features Timothy Bracy, formerly of The Mendoza Line along with members of alt-country faves Glossary and We Were The States.

Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label has once again signed on with Toth under his new moniker to release Hard Knox or “Are You Sure Hank Jr Done It This Way?,” a collection of Wand demos and home recordings, on May 26th.

“To quickly address the elephant in the room,” Toth explains, “certainly, collections of demos, outtakes and home recordings are mostly bogus, so let’s cut to the chase. In my defense, all of the cuts contained herein are ‘songs’ in the traditional western sense – my experiments in ‘surf harmonica’ and ‘doom zydeco’ will not be chronicled here, deep and plentiful as those archives may be.”

Things have been relatively quiet for the notoriously prolific songwriter since the release of last summer’s Waiting In Vain album, but 2009 looks like it’s back to business as usual. On March 31st, Toth will release the first album under the name WAND via Olympia’s People In A Position To Know Records and his own Mad Monk imprint. This is a limited edition release to set up the pending release of Hard Knox.

Toth further elaborates on Hard Knox thusly:

“All of the songs on this collection have been, at one time or another, considered for inclusion on a Wooden Wand album. As such, they make up about 5% of a towering archive, but I sleep better knowing that I have at least spared you that other 95%.

“The lyrics here bug me in many cases – in some instances the words were used as syllabic placeholders, which is the price you pay for the immediacy and, some would argue, vitality of recording demos of songs the same day you write them. Nowadays, I don’t record as many demos as I used to. But I have a bad memory, so I still occasionally break out the mics and cables and allow the creepy muse - a pest, really - do what it does, and transmit something to me. I’ve missed many episodes of Mythbusters this way. You’ve already pardoned the narcissism, now pardon the cliché: I stand behind these songs as “snapshots” and enjoy them despite their many flaws. I hope you do, too.

“Everything here was recorded by me on either a Roland BR-8 digital 8-track or its flashier, more cosmopolitan cousin, the BR-1600, with incalculable assistance from Jexie Lynn, who accompanies me on many of these songs and whose encouragement and creativity allowed many of them to be. Most of the recordings were done at my then-home in beautiful Knoxville, TN between October 2002 and January of 2007, just prior to the retirement of the Wooden Wand name.”

Onward to the present, Toth’s latest project, The Jescos has completed recording its debut for release later this year. Timothy Bracy, late of The Mendoza Line, and Toth formed the band to pay tribute to their mutual love of classic songwriters and the rock and roll zeitgeist. The band also features Elizabeth Nelson, Bingham Barnes (of alt-country cult faves Glossary), Tyler Coppage (We Were The States) and Brian Lowery. You can read Toth’s hilarious play-by-play / color commentary of the entire recording session on his blog, http://www.tothtellsthetruth.blogspot.com/.

As if this wasn’t enough, Toth is currently writing for his next official full length, a follow-up to 2008’s Waiting In Vain, collaborating with famed guitarist / producer Jon Tiven (Alex Chilton / Big Star, BB King, Wilson Pickett, Jim Carroll Band), and performing in a new band called Occult Activity On Campus with Bummer Road / Cherry Blossoms drummer Chris “Crittle” Davis, among others.

What is the Killola cult? L.A. underground buzzsaw band’s rabid fans, free album, extensive touring and SXSW show with the New York Dolls explained.

Group kicks off “Hell On Heels” tour today with Semi-Precious Weapons and Von Iva.

“Teaching quirky ‘80s new wave pop hooks how to stomp glitter-rock-style, I Am The Messer just might pack as many eccentric but indelible melodic and rhythmic twists into its 10 songs as any rock record this year” – Chuck Eddy (Village Voice, Billboard Magazine)

“You’ll need to brace yourself for the drool-able Lisa Rieffel, who blazes over Sparks-like tracks like she just gave Gwen Stefani a bloody nose.” – L.A. Weekly

Cults of all kinds seem to spring up in Los Angeles. It is a city well known for its history of obsessive sects, but few L.A. rock bands have ever enjoyed the kind of rabid fervor of its fans nationwide as Killola. The underground buzzsaw pop band’s loyal followers are often known to get tattoos of the band’s logo (see HERE) and/or add the group’s familiar "K))" symbol to their online screen names. Killola’s latest album I Am The Messer has been downloaded over 40,000 times and lauded as “Blondie for the 21st Century.” Grab your free copy of I Am The Messer HERE. Now, the garage pop quartet has been tapped to support the New York Dolls this month at the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, TX, and synth-pop heroes Berlin later at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

How did this young underground band become so popular? Its infectious tunes and lovely front woman Lisa Rieffel notwithstanding, the simple answer is: touring. Killola tours relentlessly, winning over obsessively dedicated new fans with every stop. That endless evangelism continues this week as the “Hell On Heels” west coast tour (with Semi Precious Weapons and Von Iva) kicks off. Immediately following that jaunt, Killola has the honor of playing with the legendary New York Dolls at 504 Trinity Street during SXSW. Dates follow in April with Berlin, then yet another tour in May (please see complete dates below.)

Killola lead singer Lisa Rieffel recently played the role of Daisy Robson in the Girltrash! web-series created by Angela Robinson (creator of Showtime’s The L Word). Robinson asked the singer to act on the show after having seen a Killola performance in Los Angeles.

Since signing a deal with True Anthem, a new digital distribution company specializing in free downloadable albums through strategic brand sponsorships, Killola’s latest album I Am The Messer has notched over 40,000 downloads in its first months of distribution. Following the band’s string of successfully self-booked U.S. and UK tours, the M.O.B. Agency -- the elite outfit responsible for booking No Doubt and Gwen Stefani, Fountains of Wayne, Joan Jett, Girl In A Coma and others -- recently signed Killola to their tight roster of touring bands.

And the press already loves Killola. See below for some quotes from the media, find out for yourself by downloading your FREE copy of I Am The Messer, get yourself to a Killola show in your town, and drink, drink, drink the Killola-Aid.

Alligators emerge from Washington state to snap at you with pop gems recalling Radiohead, The Beach Boys and The Zombies.

Grab “Where Does It Hide?,” the first single from Piggy & Cups HERE.

Calling themselves Alligators, these five charming gentlemen have already hit it big with their name. Alligators (the animals), are large reptiles that have a peculiar mystique surrounding their existence. Well, so do these guys. Where do they come from?

When you think about Kitsap County and “the other side of puget sound,” not much comes to mind but small towns and the naval shipyard. All the members, hailing from the greater Bremerton area, have had a long career in the local music scene and all played in some of the area’s most widely known and accomplished bands like Rocketstar RecordingsTime To Fly, Map of June, and Arper.

Talent is not in question; most of these guys have been professionally trained in music and they all convey their knowledge of songwriting in each piece they compose. With the apathetic and bland music that plagues radio stations and music venues today, it’s only a matter of time before Alligators’ brand of thought-out and innovative music breaks free to reach listeners everywhere.

Alligators take influence from many of the greats and hints of Radiohead, The Beach Boys, and The Zombies can be heard in their songs. While they don’t stick with one narrow style of music, their sound can be described as very creative, high-energy, precise pop laced with beautiful harmonies and clever arrangements. Each element of the band is interesting; from the tight pulses that the bass and drums provide, to the guitar-synthesizer relationship during the always-stylish vocal melodies.

Alligators have recently locally released a full-length album titled Piggy & Cups. It was recorded at Jason McGerr’s (Death Cab For Cutie) Two Sticks Audio in Seattle and in the comfort of Alligators’ own home. See footage of the band recording the single “Where Does It Hide?” HERE.

Alligators drummer Kit Arper started up Applehouse Records to nationally release Piggy & Cups this April 7th, 2009.

The Aguilar brothers conjure “Jeff Buckley as an ADHD-riddled nine-year-old” via genre-busting singing and bizzaro found junk-gypsy percussion setup.

New album Ma Raison De Vivre Ton Amour (Your Love Is My Reason To Live) available now.

Roberto and Nathaniel Aguilar are brothers. No Jack-and-Meg-White mystery about it. The two members of Dish have bickered on family car trips, fought over bunk beds and cruised the streets of their hometown of Damascus, Maryland their whole lives.

But more importantly, they discovered music together, and the pairing of Roberto’s organic, genre-busting singing and guitar work with Nathaniel’s junk-gypsy found percussion has been a decade in the making (check out plenty of shots of Nathaniel’s “junk” drums HERE.) That’s exactly what Dish is, two left-of-center musical minds preternaturally in tune with each other to create a sound without peer on the current pop scene.

Their debut EP Los Angeles, which has been called an impressionist dreamscape, came from a feverish three-day recording session in Los Angeles produced by drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant, Beck, Ray Lamontagne) and Jen Condos (Don Henley, Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen) and engineered by Ryan Freeland (who recently helmed Aimee Mann’s The Forgotten Arm).

A year later the Aguilar brothers took a year and produced the album Ma Raison De Vivre Ton Amour (Your Love Is My Reason To Live) which is their most complete work yet. With collaborations and the room to stretch out artistically, Dish has been described as “Jeff Buckley as an ADHD-riddled nine-year-old playing prodigious poly rhythms on pots ‘n pans” and been compared to Flaming Lips with snippets of Radiohead.

Their latest CD is raw, organic, strong, dark and beautiful, (something their fans are accustomed to in their live shows – see HERE.) It’s that intensity of performance and song craft that have, quite simply, leveled audiences wherever Dish has played. Come for the buckets, stay for the groundbreaking music. Dish will play your kitchen sink and blow the roof off the place. There are no mistakes, only sounds with intention. Intention is everything.

Jeniferever busts out of Sweden with its glacial and electrifying sounds of nostalgia, loss and longing.

UK label Monotreme (65daysofstatic, Reigns, Barzin) set to release Spring Tides in April. Get your copy of the lead track “Green Meadow Island” HERE.

Monotreme Records is extremely proud to be releasing Spring Tides, the second full-length album by Jeniferever.

Jeniferever is a four-piece band from Uppsala, Sweden. They have previously released four EPs and one album since 2002, and have played over 250 live shows across Europe. Over the years, they have gained an ever-growing band of admirers, who have bestowed descriptions such as ‘lush’, ‘melodic’, ‘swooping’, ‘glacial’, ‘beautiful’, ‘shimmering’, ‘sublime’, ‘electrifying’ and ‘atmospheric’ on their music.

Some have compared their sound to the physical beauty of their native country, with its aural landscapes of slow-paced melodies which build to orchestral-like climaxes. Stylistically, the music can fit into a number of different genres, with its elements of ambient indie rock, post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop.

Each song is perfectly crafted in a way that lends equal importance to all instruments, with intricate interplay between Martin Sandström’s, Kristofer Jönson’s and Olle Bilius’ guitars, the melodic intertwining of keyboards and Kristofer Jönson’s softly dolorous vocals and the warm heartbeat of Fredrik Aspelin’s drumming.

Lyrically compelling and poetic, the songs deal with themes of nostalgia, loss and longing, yet also manage to convey an uplifting feeling of hope. One can’t help but be moved by the soul that pours forth from these songs - from the sincerity of the vocals to the passionate instrumentation. It is as heartfelt and beautiful an album as you are likely to hear all year.

Jeniferever’s debut album, Choose A Bright Morning, was released in 2006 by Drowned In Sound Recordings in the UK and in Italy by Midfinger Records. The album has now been licensed exclusively to Monotreme Records worldwide apart from Italy, and will be re-issued this spring.

Spring Tides will be released in the Far East on Thomason Sound Records and the vinyl album will be released on the German label Denovali. The band will tour Europe in April and May. Jeniferever is Fredrik Aspelin, Olle Bilius, Martin Sandström, Kristofer Jönson with Joel Borg, Karl-Henrik Mattsson, Åsa Magnusson, David Wärmegård, Anna Tomlin, and Emelie Molin.
