Seattle-based singer-songwriter Robert Deeble premieres two music videos today for songs from his forthcoming new album Heart Like Feathers. The record, Deeble’s first full-length release in six years, is out February 7^th. Heart Like Feathers is also scheduled for release in a deluxe limited edition version that will include a CD of acoustic demos, a DVD with the “Sunflower” and “Eucharist” videos among others, all packaged in a hardcover book bind.

Of the videos and the songs that inspired them, Deeble comments, “An interesting aspect to ‘Sunflower’ is the return of an old friend, Victoria Williams.” Named one of Paste Magazine’s “Top 100 Living Songwriters,” Williams appeared to sing a duet on Deeble’s first album, “So, I found it fitting to invite her back to add vocals to the last song on my latest album,” explains Deeble. He continues, “We recorded in her California home, capturing her amazing spirit on tape and some great video footage, as well. Our director Todd Zeller was able to use this beautifully in his video of the song.”

Of “Eucharist”, Deeble explains that the video features a new mix of the song from the upcoming limited edition of Heart Like Feathers. “In this version we completely recut the guitars to heighten the intensity and dissonant distortion that we felt the song called for.” This recording of “Eucharist” also features ethereal guitar work by Ric Hordinski, a founding member of Americana favorites Over The Rhine.

In addition to Williams and Hordinski, joining Deeble on Heart Like Feathers is Stephen Hodges (drummer with Tom Waits and Mavis Staples), and Anna Lynne Williams of dream-pop band Trespassers William. Heart Like Feathers was produced by Dylan Magierek, founder of Badman Recording Co. (My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, The Innocence Mission) and is scheduled for release on February 7^th via the artist’s own Mind Bomb Publishing in conjunction with Dead Letter Records. The deluxe limited edition version of Heart Like Feathers is scheduled for release in April, 2012.

Unlike so many musicians that become painters, the Los Angeles-based artist Faris McReynolds found success as a fine artist first. Showing his work in galleries before he was even out of art school, McReynolds thought his career path was mapped out for him. He was wrong.

McReynolds, who also makes music as the minimalist avant-garde pop project One Finger Riot, takes a totally different songwriting approach as alter-ego Exdetectives on Take My Forever due February 14^th from the Post Planetary record label.

"I’m paying tribute to the music of my youth,” McReynolds says about the record. “Britpop bands like Blur, Ride, and Elastica, first wave indie rock like Dinosaur, Jr. and also The Beatles which I didn’t hear until after I’d gone through punk. This music is about being straightforward and letting the songs do the work. It’s loose, casual and direct. Hopefully something I didn’t plan for comes out of that approach.”

Take My Forever’s first single “The Lawn” is a droning wash of guitars and live -- as in not programmed -- synthesizers. “I wanted it to be this mass of sound that stays in place all the way through the song. No dynamics, just this wide swirl of textures,” McReynolds says. “It’s got loud distorted guitars, yet it manages to come off as mellow. I’m proud of that because guitars can get old really fast.”

Created in a quick two-week fit of low-budget recording (vocals were tracked in a storage closet), McReynolds plays all of the instruments (save for the drums) on Take My Forever. It’s a radical approach to making a record that bears itself out all the way down to the title itself. As McReynolds states, “The title of the album says, ‘Here, you can fucking have it. Make of it what you will.”

Columbus, Ohio’s Red Wanting Blue has released the video for “Audition” from its just-released studio album From The Vanishing Point. The clip was shot at a hometown gig at the Newport Music Hall on October 13^th, 2011 and in addition to eight professional videographers, the clip was also shot by the band’s fans. Encouraged to shoot the song with their smart phones, fans were then asked to send in the footage. Lots of these submissions made it into the final clip. It’s just another way that Red Wanting Blue engages its loyal audience and gives them a chance to be part of it all.

The fans are generous too, helping Red Wanting Blue achieve a career milestone as From The Vanishing Point made its Billboard debut in the Top 10 on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart. From The Vanishing Point is the band’s first album of new songs since 2008’s These Magnificent Miles which was re-issued in 2010 after Red Wanting Blue signed with Fanatic Records, an EMI/Caroline-distributed record label based in New York City. The album’s latest single “White Snow” has just been released to radio around the country.

Red Wanting Blue has amassed a loyal following in and around the Midwest since being formed by its leader, songwriter and vocalist, Scott Terry while in college in Ohio in the late 90’s. Fans of the band are used to its records being “released” when they are manufactured, so a proper record label set up time was something new for them. To appease Red Wanting Blue’s followers, the label posted a Soundcloud stream of the album ahead of the release date, which has since amassed nearly 150,000 track plays.

Red Wanting Blue will return to one of its strongholds, the House of Blues in Cleveland, for a headlining show on February 4^th, a return to World Café Live in Philadelphia is scheduled for 2/19, and then it’s back to NYC to headline Rockwood Music Hall on February 22^nd. The band’s last performance in NYC was also a sold-out show. Red Wanting Blue is scheduled to perform several times on the 2012 edition of The Rock Boat sailing from New Orleans to Cozumel, Mexico from March 1^st through the 5^th as well.

Austin-band Moonlight Towers released the video for the latest single from its 2011 album Day Is The New Night today. The clip for “The Easy Way Out” was created by Danny and Miranda Cameron with each band member being shot separately and then composited in post-production. Of the clip, Danny Cameron says, “I wanted to create an atmosphere which made the band seem as though it were playing in the middle of space, surrounded by nothingness.” “The Easy Way Out” is also the title track of a new Moonlight Towers EP scheduled for release on January 31^st.

The new EP captures Moonlight Towers live at the famed Austin club Antone’s where the band performed in late April of 2011 to celebrate the release of Day Is The New Night. The performances on the EP give a glimpse into a live show that has been steadily gaining word of mouth for Moonlight Towers around the country. One of the songs featured in its live form on the EP is “Heat Lightning,” the previous single from Day Is The New Night, and the track that caught the attention of Little Steven Van Zandt, famed guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and former co-star of The Sopranos.

Shortly after the release of “Heat Lightning,” Van Zandt named the track as his weekly “Coolest Song In The World” and went on to give the tune (and others from Day Is The New Night) lots of airplay over the following months on his long-running SiriusXM radio show, “Little Steven’s Underground Garage,” syndicated to stations around the world and heard by 1.2 million listeners a week. Moonlight Towers capped the year by seeing “Heat Lightning” named as Van Zandt’s #12 “Coolest Song of The Year” (LINK) and fans of the show voted the song as their #9 “Coolest Song In The World” for 2011 (LINK).

Proclaimed “amazing” by Performing Songwriter for creating what the Chicago Reader calls “perfectly molded power-pop,” the members of Moonlight Towers are “Austin’s favorite three-minute heroes” according to the Austin American-Statesman. In addition to the new video and live EP, Moonlight Towers is wrapping up production on the video for “Distant Wheels,” another track from Day Is The New Night.

“Kontiki gave me something to shoot for.” – Britt Daniel of Spoon

Austin, Texas-based band Cotton Mather will re-issue its influential 1997 album Kontiki on Valentine’s Day, 2012. Or, as band leader Robert Harrison points out, it will basically issue it for the first time. “People have certain assumptions when they hear ‘re-release,’” says Harrison. “But, if our US label at the time only printed two thousand copies and sent it to rarified writers and overseas, was it ever released in the US at all?”

Truly, it seems that most everyone that got to hear Kontiki, an album that has since gone on to be considered an influential, albeit hard-to-acquire classic, were those it actually influenced. In the US, early supporter Britt Daniel of Spoon talked about Kontiki as an inspiration and Little Steven Van Zandt of the E-Street Band gave it generous play on his nationally syndicated radio show. While the record never had a chance commercially in America, in the UK the album was an instant smash in the press, earning raves from Mojo, Uncut and The Guardian upon its European release. When Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis discovered the record, they talked about it in interviews, and ultimately invited Cotton Mather on tour.

Even though Kontiki suffered from a lack of a marketing strategy in the US, the music itself was no accident. “When we made Kontiki we’d been courted, groomed and disappointed by the music industry for three years already,” explains Harrison. “Records at that time were still being made under the authority of ‘professionals’ and the professionals up until that point had failed us. So we reacted.” Harrison continues, explaining, “We were a band operating with a punk rock ethos that eschewed music industry convention and embraced the garage as laboratory in the age before Pro-Tools. The headlines at the time were all ‘Holy shit! It’s four-track cassette?’ We decided the songs were tough enough to withstand our technical limitations and that we could capture the part of it that was pure rock n’ roll. I think that’s why musicians were into it.”

Continuing to reflect on that time nearly a decade-and-a-half later, Harrison adds, “I suppose that besides the songs, it was also the disobedience and daring we displayed when it came to recording and career path that made Cotton Mather loveable, and yet in some ways, it’s what made us little known, as well. Today, everybody is making their own records, but sometimes that’s not a good thing. We’re now hearing the first generation of artists who’ve modeled their whole aesthetic on crappy sounding home recordings. People have come up to me over the years to say ‘You inspired me to record myself!,’ and I think, ‘Sorry about that!’”

Harrison’s songwriting and ahead-of-his-time production skills on Kontiki can finally be heard instead of just discussed now that he has regained the rights to the album and scheduled it for a deluxe re-issue on February 14th, 2012 on his own Star Apple Kingdom label. In addition to the original album and copious liner notes, the package comes with the requisite second disc of outtakes, tracks that didn’t make the album and demos like the acoustic version of the rave-up of an album opener “Camp Hill Rail Operator” linked above.

The Seattle-based duo Lux will release its debut album We Are Not The Same on April 3rd, 2012. Inspired by some of the most essential artists of the era of indie and underground music (Pavement, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Magnetic Fields, The Jesus & Mary Chain, New Order, Blondie), Leah Rosen and David Chandler trade off vocals, guitars, synths and drum programming on the record which they also wrote, recorded and mixed themselves.

The pair originally met via Craigslist in early 2010 and quickly released the digital EP “Disorders” just a scant five months later in July of that year. Inspired by the DIY ethics of their heroes, Rosen and Chandler began to relentlessly promote the songs on the internet, gaining the attention of adventurous foreign blogs in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Italy, and Spain.

The songs began to rack up hundreds of plays a day and after setting up a Facebook page, Lux quickly amassed 8500-plus “likes” – an impressive feat for a self-released, self-promoted act that was already doing everything else itself. Lux also printed up a couple hundred copies of “Disorders,” mailed them out themselves to a list of college radio stations, and promptly landed on the playlists of influential stations such as WNYU at New York University and KALX at the University of California at Berkeley.

Lux is still contemplating how it will play live (they never have!) as both Rosen and Chandler are self-confessed control freaks susceptible to the unpredictable nature of the stage. “Really, we just haven’t got around to it yet,” says Chandler. “We were actually offered a tour of Europe, but decided to focus on recording the album instead.” The debut Lux album We Are Not The Same is due for release on April 3rd.

The Berlin-based Israeli band TV Buddhas recently released a new 7-inch on the Staatsakt label, distributed by Rough Trade. Vice Magazine recently caught up with TV Buddhas on one of its never-ending European tours to chat. See the interview here: http://www.vice.com/en_uk/noisey-vbs/tv-buddhas.

With the new single out, and being a prolific band, TV Buddhas is now prepping its next batch of songs. Two of these new TV Buddhas tunes were recently performed acoustically by the trio for the Portugese broadcast Bodyspace. Of the performance, Bodyspace writes (translated from Portugese): “In passing by Portugal, more precisely by the city of Porto, the Israelis TV Buddhas (currently living in Berlin) have accepted our invitation and went to the basement of the Cafe Ceuta and devoted to Bodyspace two wonderful songs in format essentially acoustic, between two fingers of conversation and a few shots of snooker to heat the environment.”

Over the past four years, the three members of TV Buddhas (Juval Haring, his wife Mickey Triest and her brother Uri Triest) have proven themselves to be one of Europe’s most hardworking acts, regularly performing 200-plus shows a year. The band’s work ethic is echoed in its music, influenced by early 80’s guitar driven punk rock, in all its naivety and pathos, and is reminiscent of bands like The Wipers, Husker Du and The Ramones.

TV Buddhas’ lyrics deal mostly with outsider-ism, failing in life, going nowhere, and TV addiction. Some of the realities that end up in the band’s songs can be witnessed first-hand in the documentary of the first, and highly disastrous TV Buddhas US tour. Denver-based indie rock band Dressy Bessy is back with a new holiday single and a new plan. This time, the band is playing by its own rules. Having previously taken cues from its Sixties and Seventies heroes, Dressy Bessy is taking that one step further and plans to start releasing a series of singles next year and beyond.

Lead singer and guitarist, Tammy Ealom, along with rocker boyfriend, lead guitarist John Hill (The Apples in stereo), founding bass player Rob Greene, and the solid backbeat of Craig Gilbert, intends the work to be a full-length album, but released one or two songs at a time, “So this way”, Ealom says, “you won’t have to wait more than three months for new songs, ever.”

Dressy Bessy is kicking things off early with a new holiday single. “Mister Kringle’s” is dedicated to and inspired by Ms. Ealom’s father, Terry Atherton, a life-long record collector, dealer, and music lover, who succumbed to terminal illness in February, 2011. Ealom reflects, “My Dad was a mod in the sixties, so it’s really no wonder why I turned out the way I did. From the time he gave me my first record (“Hang On Sloopy” by The McCoys) he has always been a major influence on my music and me.”

The upcoming “album” plans include full digital releases every three months starting in March 2012, with videos and limited edition vinyl along the way. CD and vinyl collections will follow in 2013. All songs will be available at select online marketplaces and directly from the band’s website. There you will find a variety of single downloads, various merchandising, as well as several “Club House” subscription packages that should be enticing to both the casual Dressy Bessy fan and the most dedicated.

“We’ve always had an emphasis on having fun,” says Dressy Bessy guitarist and recording engineer, John Hill. “Recently we realized the ups and downs that come with a full album production. It was just getting in the way of our fun. We want to make music our way, release it, and keep it coming. This should keep us happy and in turn our music and our fans will benefit,” Hill concludes.

While Dressy Bessy’s holiday single is only one track and might leave you wanting more, rest assured that the next pop gem by Dressy Bessy is on the horizon, and Ealom, Denver’s here-and-now girl, is up to the task. “I can keep up this pace forever,” she says, “So you’d better get ready to rock!”

Austin, Texas band Cotton Mather is preparing to reissue its long out-of-print landmark power pop album Kontiki on Valentine's Day, 2012. The album was originally released in the US in 1997 with little fanfare. In the UK, however, Kontiki was a smash with Uncut Magazine giving the album five stars and calling it “music to smile yourself to death to.” Mojo said the songs were “brought to life with daring vitality” and in its own five-star review, The Guardian called Kontiki “a bewildering, dizzy thrill.”

With the spotlight shining on the album in their homeland, Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher discovered and fell in love with Kontiki. The Gallaghers started talking about the record in the press themselves, helping to spur on a cult following for the album among musicians all over the globe. A fellow Austin-ite and fan from the beginning, Spoon’s Britt Daniel also began to spread the word, and over the years, the adoration of Kontiki continued to grow, leading band leader Robert Harrison to prepare Kontiki (Deluxe Edition).

Scheduled for release on February 14th, 2012 on Harrison’s own Star Apple Kingdom label, the two-CD deluxe format will include the original album along with four-track demos, acoustic versions and songs that didn't make the final cut. Harrision funded the reissue via a Kickstarter campaign made successful by the many fans that Kontiki created since 1997. Moneychasers, the sophomore album by Lexington, Kentucky’s 10-member band Big Fresh is not only an addictive pop record, it’s also a satirical, absurdist board game.

Big Fresh leader John Ferguson (who also plays keyboards in The Apples in stereo) explains, “You have to play the game to realize that you can never actually win. The design of the game was meant to parody Milton-Bradley games from our childhood, but the concept was created to shine a light on class issues and the inhumanity of American capitalism.”

The setbacks that players encounter as they play the Moneychasers game are obvious critiques of the modern capitalist trap and are meant to be as funny as they are sad. Players can participate in the game as a “wage slave”, “bourgeoisie,” or “overclass,” with the goal of chasing money around the board to “reach your dreams.”

As for the addictive pop record part of Moneychasers, listeners will find sleek waves of swirling harmonies, horns and electronic bliss. Produced by Big Fresh and engineered by electro-wizard Craig Morris in his hand-built Garden Gate Studio (The Apples in stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Thee American Revolution), the album is packed with production details including guitar contributions from lo-fi pioneer R. Stevie Moore who has been a mentor to Ferguson since childhood.

Following up an extended stay in the States, New Zealand-based artists (and ‘Lil Chief Records label mates) Princess Chelsea and Pikachunes have some video news on tap. Jumping up in YouTubes views to nearly 250,000 plays since its American debut is Princess Chelsea’s video for “The Cigarette Duet,” the first single from Lil’ Golden Book, from primarily-solo artist Chelsea Nikkel’s debut album.

The clip was directed by and co-stars Jonathan Bree, a member of Sub Pop band The Brunettes and a proprietor of the ‘Lil Chief Records label. Bree claims he shouldn’t even be credited at director, however, saying, “The Cigarette Duet music video was filmed on a shoestring budget of zero dollars, with no production crew, director or even a tripod. I filmed and edited it, and I'm not a filmmaker,” he joked.

Bree continues, “We were house sitting a swanky property in an Auckland suburb and the idea for the video came to me after looking out at the backyard area and its unusual amount of palm trees, exotic plants, and hot tub. It was all done in one take that take took us six hours to get right. The close-up scene of Chelsea lighting up was filmed later that night.”

Another video with a lot of YouTube love (over a million views) is The Go! Team clip that has come to be known as “the Pac-Man” video.” The video was directed in 2007 by Doug Schachtel and features the famous video game characters running around the streets of New York. Now Schachtel re-visits this theme in his clip for “Nervous” by Miles McDougall aka Pikachunes.

Donning his namesake Pikachu pajamas, McDougall can be seen performing the song at various New York City landmarks to the delight and confusion of many Manhattanites. Some Disney characters even make a surprise appearance and happily accept McDougall as one of their own. “Nervous” is the first single from the self-titled Pikachunes debut album, inspired by and created during some unexpected downtime from McDougall’s Jazz drumming study which was preceded by reconstructive surgery on his arm.
