“Filming ‘Petting Zoo’ was a blast,” says 17-year-old Jendayi Bonds of Charlie Belle about the first video from the duo’s upcoming EP.  “It was shot almost entirely out of our carport and everyone in the video is a friend of ours, so it was just a whole lot of fun.”

Jendayi goes on to say that the hardest part about the video (which also stars her bandmate and brother, 14-year-old Gyasi Bonds) was the driving. “That car is pretty old and it's a stick shift, so I had to learn how to drive a stick a half our before we started filming!”

“It’s pretty R&B inspired, which excites me,” she explains about “I Don’t Want To Be Alone,” the duo’s new EP, scheduled for release on Sept. 18th, 2015.  “I’ve really been feeling the groove and trying to figure out a way to put that into Charlie Belle without taking away from who we are.” She succeeded.

This time, complemented by the agile bass playing of studio vet David Andersen, the songs jump in a way that gets in your face, under your skin, and into your heart and mind.  The groove Jendayi is feeling hits home and is immediate.

“Nobody knows me like I do / But everyone is telling me what I’m supposed to do / And nobody knows what goes on in my head / But everyone is acting like all my thoughts can be read,” Jendayi sings on “Petting Zoo,” the song most reminiscent of the band’s previous EP, bearing a distinct UK sound that doesn’t quit.

The Bonds siblings, who began playing together as a duo in 2011 (promptly landing in USA Today with a cover of “Strange Powers” by Magnetic Fields), made a splash earlier this year with the breezy debut EP “Get To Know,” which recalled the English “alternapop” sound of the 90’s in a succinct and memorable handful of songs that reflected Jendayi’s mature-beyond-her-years songwriting.

Displaying a style that Jendayi began to hone starting with her first songwriting attempts at only 10-years-old (brother Gyasi started on drums at four!), the “Get To Know” EP earned Jendayi’s songs their first bit of national attention.  The new collection shows off a major step forward in the young lyricist’s songwriting and abilities with a hook.

“This is an exciting time for us as people and as artists,” explains Douglas Wooldridge of Tree Machines referring to the formerly Lawrence, Kansas-based duo’s decision to relocate to Los Angeles this summer. “This city is vastly different from the one where we grew up, but here we are staring blankly into the sun, trying to get our feet under us.”

Following up Wooldridge and bandmate Patrick Aubry’s critically praised debut EP as Tree Machines in early 2015, the duo will now release three new stand-alone singles as they continue to prep a full-length.  The first of these singles, released August 7th, is “Summer Night,” a more pop take on the Tree Machines sound than previously heard.

‘Summer Night’ is one of our most playful songs to date by far,” says Wooldridge.  “It’s full of quirky guitar lines and stoned observations of late night wonderings in bar districts, following two hand-clasped lovers striving to keep one step ahead of this world.”

Aubry continues the thought, explaining that “Summer Night” is the first Tree Machines track that he’s ever recorded on guitar, since Wooldridge and Aubry’s previous incarnation as a trio left Aubry relegated to bass.

“I’ve written plenty of songs on guitar, but as no one else was willing to shoulder the bass for the songs, I had to pass the riffs on to the others,” he explains. “I suppose with the changing of the guard, it’s only natural that I’d start expressing myself.”

In addition to “Summer Night,” look out for the new Tree Machines singles “To Be Alive” on August 28th and “At Arms Length” on September 18th.  Then it’s on to the first Tree Machines album.

“The immediate plan for the future is to partner up with our producer Mikel Giffin, who has now become a true member of Tree Machines and get started on an album,” says Wooldridge. “An album that amasses to the enormity of our move to the coast.”

“It feels like we’re just getting warmed up,” says Aubry of the band’s future. “It feels like we’ve got so much more to write.”

Austin-based musician Craig Marshall believes that as a songwriter, he’s only as good as his next song. Fortunately, the prolific Marshall always seems to have a next song on tap, with a songbook that goes back thirty-plus years.  The latest entry into Marshall’s discography is his sixth album After All, arriving via Big Ticket Records on August 7th

The album’s second single “Standing Still” is the most bluegrass track on After All, with contributing players including Patterson Barrett on mandolin and dobro, Eddie Dickerson on fiddle, and Betty Soo on harmony vocals. Hear it now via Blurt.

After All is Marshall’s second outing with producer (and longtime Marshall admirer), Robert Harrison, leader of the critically acclaimed band, Cotton Mather.

Craig Marshall has always kept his artistic sights trained on the loftiest of goals,” comments Harrison.  “That is to craft songs that are immediate, timeless, and classic.”  Indeed, the songs on After All show off Marshall’s gift for penning and performing the kinds of tunes that helped country-inflected folk to eventually become the Americana genre. His longstanding status as a well-kept secret speaks to his influence, while his skills transcend genre at the same time.

“I’m hearing Buck Owens or Merle Haggard in my head when I’m writing a song like ‘After All’ or ‘The Only Sound,’Marshall says, but in fact, two of After All’s centerpieces, the single “Something On Your Mind” and “Only Till The End of Time” navigate firmly in the Petty-Beatles lane.

Marshall’s love of The Beach Boys and The Bee Gees can also be heard, and over the years, critics have cited artists as diverse as Badfinger, Marshall Crenshaw and XTC when describing Marshall.  The songs on After All do show these influences, but ultimately a Marshall fan will hear a Marshall song, and the uninitiated will be treated to a warm, familiar sound that plays unique and fresh.

After All by Craig Marshall arrives on August 7th, 2015 via the artist’s own Big Ticket Records label. Marshall is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
