SPIN has premiered “U.V.,” the first single from the upcoming debut by Oakland, California–based trio Mortar & Pestle.  “This song is all about how things that normally feel good can be harmful to you,” says band member Paul Shinichi of the track, scheduled for release on May 7th, 2013 from the Post Primal label.

The sounds of a pinball machine in the opening of “U.V.” might say fun, but gives way to a darkness that is real.  Born on the kitchen piano of a studio apartment, days after singer Janaysa Lambert and keyboardist Shinichi first met at a mutual friend’s party, the two were joined within the year by drummer Sean Paul Duke. Tragically, the friend who brought them together met with an untimely death shortly after she gave the band its name.

“She wanted to be the one to name us,” says Shinichi. “We were struggling with a name for months, and then she came up with Mortar & Pestle. I think honoring her life is one reason why we are together. This album is really about her.”

The self-titled debut from Mortar & Pestle is scheduled for release on the Post Primal label on May 7th, 2013. The band’s first single “U.V.” is streaming now. Members of Mortar & Pestle are available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

Austin-based band Boy + Kite rustled up a bit of a bang around town upon the release of its debut album Go Fly in 2011.  The record lodged itself in the charts of the city’s NPR affiliate, and Boy + Kite was picked to tour as opener for favorite sons of Fort Worth, The Toadies.

Family life soon called, inflicting constant delays on the production of the video for the band’s popular song “Think In Stereo,” but eventually kids get born and so do paint fight filled films. The “Think In Stereo” video, directed and produced by Daniel Gibbs of Yard Turkey (Coldplay, Dixie Chicks, Blues Traveler, Ben Kweller) is worth the wait.  Check out the debut of the clip now via Under The Radar.

“This video was absolutely a riot to make,” says guitarist and co-lead vocalist Darvin Jones. “Daniel was such a pleasure to work with, and brave enough to get very messy and with very expensive film equipment! We all gave up some clothes, shoes, and almost our eyesight that day.”

The clip is also a reminder of this band’s pop power as it celebrates its upcoming official South By Southwest showcase with the release of an EP of new songs.  Titled “We Can Go Anywhere We Want,” the new Boy + Kite EP was recorded by Nada Surf keyboardist Louie Lino and is scheduled for release on March 19th, four days after the band’s official South By Southwest showcase at The Parish Underground at 8:25 PM.  Stay tuned for the first single from the new EP coming soon.

Australian indie pop duo The Cannanes will issue their first official release in over 11 years on March 19th, 2013. The “Small Batch” EP contains the fun, bouncy songs that the band's fans know them for (and that famously earned them a mention in Kurt Cobain’s journals.)  The Cannanes have been releasing modest, ramshackle records since being formed in Sydney, Australia by Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil almost 30 years ago.

UK producer Richie Phoe has his own take on the first single from “Small Batch” and his downtempo remix of “Bumper” is streaming and available for download now.  BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank has described Phoe as “Brighton’s Lee Scratch Perry” and fellow BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens calls his work “Bouncy dub at its very best.”

SPIN recently premiered the original EP version of “Bumper,” with columnist Marc Hogan writing, “Cardigan-owners, rejoice! Long-running Australian indie-pop combo The Cannanes have returned with ‘Bumper,’ the first taste of their first major release since 2002’s Trouble Seemed So Far Away. The ‘Small Batch’ EP, due March 19, is helmed by veteran members Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil; and while the production quality seems slightly more polished, the earnest melodicism remains.”

For the “Small Batch” EP, The Cannanes have once again collaborated with Explosion Robinson producer and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Hermann.  The six-track release sees Gibson and O’Neil at their best, back on familiar territory musing on the nature of friendship, love, and outer space that has characterized their best work over the last 27 years.

The Cannanes are available for interviews. Check out a recent Q&A with Fran Gibson via Girl About Town. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“Their arty, roiling post-punk veers on the dissonant, gale-swept precipice where noise kites like Sonic Youth fly.” – Orlando Weekly

Tampa, Florida’s Permanent Makeup will release its debut album The Void… It Creeps via the New Granada label on February 26th.  MAGNET Magazine has premiered the album’s first single “Not A Riot,” available for free download now.

Formed in 2010, bassist Chris Nadeau (of noise-punk band Blast & The Detergents), his wife/drummer Susan Dickson, and guitarist James Bess (ex-Dumbwaiters, Insect Joy), played their first show together as Permanent Makeup without having ever practiced. The venue was a doctor’s office, and the mostly improvised show, featuring audience members on vocals reading infomercial ad copy, was deemed a success.

Calling the underground punk and art scene their home, Permanent Makeup spent the following two years cutting its teeth in true DIY fashion by playing house shows on self-booked tours of the U.S. and recording and releasing home-packaged EPs.

Fans of the band have since identified elements in Permanent Makeup’s sound that remind of fuzzed-out garage-psych, the writings of author Phillip K. Dick, sci-fi surf and avant-electronic music, and the content of pamphlets handed out on street corners by homeless schizophrenics.

The Void… It Creeps, the first official label release from Permanent Makeup, is scheduled for release on February 26th.  See the band set the record free via an album trailer here: http://vimeo.com/59033211 and on tour next month (see dates below.)

Permanent Makeup is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
