Youth is an instantly impressive album full of smart melodic modern pop.” – Babysue

“...the spirit and vitality of a group on the verge of making it on their own terms...” – This Is Book's Music

Columbus, Ohio band Alert New London recently released its debut album, the meticulously crafted Youth, on November 15th.   The album’s first single “Silverdrive” caught the attention of the local press, landing the band features in several Columbus papers, and now cutting edge blogs are beginning to find the band’s impressive album as well. “Pulse of Youth,” a new single from the record, has just been made available.

Youth was completed over the course of 15 months in six different studios, reflecting a dedication to precision that can only come from people who truly love what they do. Using effected guitars (up to 39 pedals), vocal harmonies (voicing universal messages), and heavy drumbeats (to entice connoisseurs and average listeners alike) on Youth, this band of best friends has created a melodic wall of atmospheric ambient pop with the album’s 11 tracks.

“Absolutely sublime.” – Rolling Stone on Princess Chelsea

“Pop perfection.” – Mix It Up (New Zealand) on Pikachunes

Following up an extended stay in the States, New Zealand-based artists (and ‘Lil Chief Records label mates) Princess Chelsea and Pikachunes have some video news on tap.  Jumping up in YouTubes views to nearly 250,000 plays since its American debut is Princess Chelsea’s video for “The Cigarette Duet,” the first single from Lil’ Golden Book, from primarily-solo artist Chelsea Nikkel’s debut album.

The clip was directed by and co-stars Jonathan Bree, a member of Sub Pop band The Brunettes and a proprietor of the ‘Lil Chief Records label.  Bree claims he shouldn’t even be credited at director, however, saying, “The Cigarette Duet music video was filmed on a shoestring budget of zero dollars, with no production crew, director or even a tripod. I filmed and edited it, and I'm not a filmmaker,” he joked.

Bree continues, “We were house sitting a swanky property in an Auckland suburb and the idea for the video came to me after looking out at the backyard area and its unusual amount of palm trees, exotic plants, and hot tub.  It was all done in one take that take took us six hours to get right. The close-up scene of Chelsea lighting up was filmed later that night.”

Another video with a lot of YouTube love (over a million views) is The Go! Team clip that has come to be known as “the Pac-Man” video.” The video was directed in 2007 by Doug Schachtel and features the famous video game characters running around the streets of New York. Now Schachtel re-visits this theme in his clip for “Nervous” by Miles McDougall aka Pikachunes.

Donning his namesake Pikachu pajamas, McDougall can be seen performing the song at various New York City landmarks to the delight and confusion of many Manhattanites.  Some Disney characters even make a surprise appearance and happily accept McDougall as one of their own. “Nervous” is the first single from the self-titled Pikachunes debut album, inspired by and created during some unexpected downtime from McDougall’s Jazz drumming study which was preceded by reconstructive surgery on his arm.

Chelsea Nikkel and Miles McDougall are available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“City of Ice” is the title track and the latest single from the new Br’er album City of Ice.

+++

Philadelphia-based musician Benjamin Schurr (recording under the name Br’er) is currently on tour in support of his latest album City of Ice, scheduled for release via the Edible Onion label this Tuesday, November 22nd. The title track from City of Ice is also the latest single from the album where bleak industrial soundscapes, bittersweet pop songwriting, and modern classical music are combined with the refined hand of a young, but experienced songwriter.

Sounding like a dark, electronic version of The Smiths or Bright Eyes produced by Trent Reznor, the songs on City of Ice focus on topics that tend to be marginalized in music such as abuse, displacement, and mental illness (although love and joy make appearances too).  Never-the-less, Br’er still manages to cover these topics in a way that commands repeat listening.

“Since Br’er is a personal coping mechanism for me, I really want the music to reflect the lyrics appropriately and to get the right sounds by any means necessary,” says Schurr. This meant either learning an instrument simply to satisfy the need for a specific part, or as Schurr states, to arrange for “musical one night stands” by recruiting players he’d meet at parties. Schurr would record them and typically never see them again.

City of Ice will be released on November 22nd, 2011 by Edible Onion Records. The album packaging contains a lyric and photography book held in cases covered in gel transfers on top of acrylic and watercolor washes. Each case is unique and hand numbered.  Benjamin Schurr is available for interviews. Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.
