More About The Boom Bang

The Boom Bang is comprised of a group of young friends from suburban Oklahoma City that play loud, fun music. Creating a combination of garage, surf and punk music not unlike Ty Segall, Jeff The Brotherhood or Thee Oh Sees, the foursome of James Smith (Vocals), Tommy McKenzie (Guitar), Weston Lorance (Bass), and Charles Whetstone (Drums) has been playing together for two years.

In that time, the band has managed to work their way onto festival performances at South By Southwest, DFest, the Norman Music Festival, and the Neon Reverb Music Festival. With one national release under their belt through Guestroom Records, The Boom Bang’s debut full-length World War Fun is now scheduled for release on Norman, Oklahoma’s Nice People Records to be followed by a national tour in June and July of 2011.

The band was also recently named one of four bands poised for an “enormous 2011” by the Oklahoma Gazette.  Check it out HERE.

The Boom Bang is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

About Sunshine Factory

Sunshine Factory is a preschool in the Los Angeles suburb of Palmdale, or a band from Palmdale. For purposes that suit us, we will discuss the band.

Sunshine Factory creates ethereal yet playful songs that bring a fresh interpretation to dreamy music. This sound is evident on the band’s debut 7-inch, “Lower Away” b/w “Tidal Waves,” containing two songs that delight, and promise a bright future for this aptly named group. Gigging around L.A. and building an audience all the way, the band has now begun to assemble an EP which will contain two songs recorded solo by band-leader Corey Judge and performed on the grand piano donated in the 1960’s to Hollywood radio station KPFK by The Beach Boys.

The story of Sunshine Factory began in the sleepy desert town of Palmdale, California just outside of Los Angeles. Corey Judge learned to play clarinet at age nine and discovered the guitar at age fourteen. The Beatles, Beach Boys, and Pink Martini are big in his record collection. Corey met Jordan Judge when his parents brought him home from the hospital – they are brothers. Jordan learned to play the guitar at age thirteen and his love of music covers the wide spectrum from Giacomo Puccini and Bear McCreary to Simon and Garfunkel to The Shins.

The brothers met John Karwoski in late 2006 and he soon became Sunshine Factory’s permanent drummer. Karwoski is inspired by music like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, and The Smiths. The final addition to the complete Sunshine Factory line-up occurred in early 2009 with the arrival of Tony Hammons. Hammons adds his own style to the fray, with influences such as Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Bjork, and Sonic Youth.

With the full line-up in place, Sunshine Factory recorded and self released a demo and began playing shows around Los Angeles to get their sea legs. After garnering the attention of Culdesac Kids family leader, Steve Martin, the band has now released its debut single.

Sunshine Factory is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“…imagine Toni Braxton fronting Nine Inch Nails. Or picture Prince and Joy Division collaborating...” – MTV Iggy

Minneapolis band, Dearling Physique, has been crowned the “Artist of The Week” at MTV’s popular new music blog, Iggy. Check out the coverage HERE and read a Q&A with band leader Domino Davis while you’re at it. The honor follows on the heels of the growing enthusiasm for the band and its new album that will go live at SXSW on March 15th when the band appears as part of the Art Disaster/Fanatic showcase at Beauty Bar.  RSVP for the event at http://www.artdisaster.com. The band will play two shows at home in Minneapolis leading up the event.

“Discipline Your Hands,” the first single and video from Deadeye Dealer album, was recently followed-up with another compelling single, “Monster” (MP3). A hybrid of mysterious, sensual rhythms; a soundtrack for the dark untraveled corners hidden beneath the gentle reflections of a pulsating metropolis, the song is another avant-garde but accessible, dark yet uplifting song from the band’s debut album.

Dearling Physique is a band that manipulates genres, effortlessly gliding between ambient sounds and electronica, from alternative pop to soul, while defying preconceived notions of conventional music. Led by enigmatic front man, Domino Davis, the band has built an alluring reputation for captivating and challenging audiences. It’s this flair for visual and musical complexities that has fueled Dearling Physique’s local and emerging national success.

Domino Davis is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

“...an impressive torrent of crunchy guitar distortion...” – Pop Matters

More About Carol Bui

Tacoma, Washington’s Carol Bui took up drums (see her entry on Modern Drummer’s blog HERE) and Middle Eastern dance over the years since her last album, and these new pursuits play vital roles on Bui’s upcoming third record Red Ship. The album is set for release on March 8th, 2011 on Bui’s own Ex Oh Records and Bui will be taking on a handful of rare live performances upon the album’s release.

For those attending South By Southwest, Bui can be seen at the “DC Does TX” event (Bui is originally from the DC area) on March 16th as well as My Old Kentucky Blog’s yearly party on March 18th. See below for more details and a complete list of Carol Bui tour dates.

The provocative content, lush production (once again by TJ Lipple of Aloha along with Bui herself), and unique arrangements on Red Ship demonstrate what Carol Bui chooses to term “the primitive means of expressing joy.”  She explains by asking, “What did people do to make music and express happiness back when there weren’t sophisticated instruments around? They hit things! And sang! And danced! This record is to invoke that spirit.”

Carol Bui is available for interviews.  Contact Josh Bloom at Fanatic for more information.

About Batwings Catwings

Amidst the blood, cocaine, and Botox soaked tapestry of L.A., the members of Batwings Catwings hail from all over the US and converge upon the wasteland of Southern California to give underground dwellers a reason to shake and sweat. Following the release of “Endless Summer,” the first single and video from the band’s debut EP, Peacock Collection, the track was promptly remixed by Jacob Safari (Wavves, Mae Shi). This remix (heard HERE) recently debuted at My Old Kentucky Blog (LINK) and coincides with the release of “Misbehaving,” (MP3) the latest rave-up of a single from the EP.

All of this music gives but an indication of the intensity of the Batwings Catwings live experience which will descend upon Austin, Texas during SXSW 2011.  Batwings Catwings will make numerous appearances during the week, most notably at Dom’y Books on March 18th at the showcase of trend-setting Los Angeles punk rock venue, The Smell. As usual, Batwings Catwings is continuing to cut a path straight through the high dollar hustle of Hollywood to the art galleries and punk houses that are known by only the most discerning ears.

Fronted by the tiny, yet fierce dance commander Dana Poblete, an everygirl with the ability to entrance audiences from Los Angeles to the hell mouths of Mexico’s border towns, she is backed by guitarist and UCLA professor Pepper Glass who wields his axe with the devastating accuracy of his feared red correction pen.   On the drums is L.A. blogger Clay Johnson, who cut his teeth drumming for about every metal band on the northern Midwest’s arctic front.  The newest member, Josh Crampton rounds out the lineup on bass, diversifying the sound even further with his sexy funk and shoegaze influences.

Batwings Catwings’ first EP, Peacock Collection is out now IndianGold Records.  Recorded at L.A.’s famous Infrasonic Studios by Daniel Haworth and engineered by Pete Lyman (No Age, Best Coast, Abe Vigoda), Peacock Collection is a totem of modernist punk – noisy as hell with a tinge of pop and a nod to the punk rock roots of the L.A. underground.

Batwings Catwings is available for interviews.  Contact Corey Gingerich at Fanatic for more information.

“I’m Da Best” is the second single from Shunda K’s solo album debut, “The Most Wanted”

+++

Shunda K’s debut solo album The Most Wanted dropped worldwide on January 11th and the latest single from the record, “My Light” (MP3) featuring the bombastic female UK rapper, Tan, is already causing a commotion. The shooting of the video for the album’s second single “I’m Da Best” recently wrapped its Florida production and has now moved to Los Angeles for another week of shooting under the direction of Steven Andrew Garcia of The Masses (wearethemasses.com).

Garcia informs us that the clip   “…will be featuring select wardrobe items from legendary fashion designer, Brian Lichtenberg (LINK) who has worked with some amazing artists like Peaches, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, MIA, and many others. Also, Trillon Galloway, who recently was featured in Michael Jackson’s last video, ‘Hold My Hand (feat. Akon)’ will play one of our main bullies.” See Lady Gaga wearing a Lichtenberg necklace in a still from her “Poker Face” video HERE. Also appearing in the clip is child actor Ian Hamrick, famously featured in MIA’s controversial “Born Free” video. See Hamrick discussing his role in that video courtesy of TMZ at: http://www.tmz.com/2010/04/29/m-i-a-mia-music-video-red-head-kid-violence-born-free-video-ian-hamrick.

Shunda K’s “I’m Da Best” clip is a direct assault on the Westboro Baptist Church (WIKI) and concerns a young boy who is harassed, called “faggot” by his peers, faces even more tension at home and how, with the help of his faith and the support of his role models Shunda K and Shon B, he overcomes these obstacles to stand tall. The video is Shunda K’s contribution to the ongoing “It Gets Better” Project (itgetsbetter.org) started by famed syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage as a place where young people who are lesbian, gay, bi, or trans can see how love and happiness can be a reality in their future.

To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of “Glee”, Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, and Suze Orman among many others.  The video for “I’m Da Best” will debut in mid-January.  More stills from the clip can viewed HERE.

Shunda K’s debut solo album The Most Wanted arrives on the heels of two Shunda K mixtapes downloaded thousands of times each, US and Australian dates opening for electro superstar Peaches, a collab on the track and video for the Peaches song “Billionaire”, and the NME naming Shunda K to its “Cool List” and earmarking The Most Wanted’s first single “Here I Am To Save The World” as one of “10 Tracks You Need To Hear”.
