There is a quiver on the mirror’s edge. Silver fish scatter below the surface. A new sound rings from Kentucky: a fuzzed-out, spaced-out, finger-picking noise like “Interstellar Overdrive” reborn in Appalachia. That sound is Benton, Kentucky’s Terrapin Pond, the latest signing to Garden Gate Records, the new record label from Apples In Stereo leader Robert Schneider and family.

Neo-psychedelic mastermind and producer Craig Morris presents an innovative fusion of garage rock and Appalachian folk, incorporating friends, family and regional Bluegrass musicians (including members of the Kentucky family band The McKendrees) in a swirling folk-psych landscape.

Their debut album, Hello All Stations, plays like an unheard mountain songbook discovered by latter-day indie rockers—full of classic hooks we might anticipate from Morris and company, but this time growing in a darker, mossier forest.

Fuzz guitar, banjo, mandolin and Mellotron ebb and surge, buoyed by lush harmonies and a heavy rhythm section, as if Fleet Foxes collided with The Band. Described by Morris as “modern rural psychedelic music,” Terrapin Pond is certain to appeal to fans of Americana and of the new psychedelia.
