More About Wake Up Lucid

L.A.’s Wake Up Lucid started as a vision of singer/guitarist Ryan Baca’s father who had passed. In the dream they wrote a song together, and the name of the song was “Wake Up Lucid.” Since that fateful night in 2008, Ryan and his two cousins Ian (bass) and Jamie Baca (drums) have quickly burned their name into the rock and roll conscience of Southern California with their old school brew of savage blues, heavy rhythm, and the kind of down home sincerity long lost to middle aged ponytails, how-to-play-guitar videos, and ten thousand dollar “vintage” guitar amps.

In the two years since Wake Up Lucid’s inception, the band has already seen two mentions in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Smoking Section” and won Urban Outfitters’ “Your Band Here” contest -- two achievements made without a record label or a professional recording. Now, Wake Up Lucid has cut their first EP, Look Alive People, at the fabled Village Studios in West Los Angeles onto two-inch analog tape (what else?) The band continues to gig around the west coast while planning a national tour for the fall. Obviously, the future is definitely bright for this rock and roll family. As Ryan Baca says, “Our dads were brothers. We grew up watching them play together, doing this just keeps up that family tradition.”

More about Julius C’s Don’t Want Anybody” video

Behold! A group of gorillas has run amok in Central Park and it’s no suprise considering they’re listening to the perfect soundtrack for the summer: Julius C’s debut single “Don’t Want Anybody.” Directed by New York-based filmaker, Jay Lap, a friend of the band since his days at at the prestigious Tisch school, the “Don’t Want Anybody” clip is about as fun and funny as you might expect from a band that is able to take a tune about love, loss, and self-discovery and render it as explosively raw pop.

“Don’t Want Anybody” was shot by Jon Chen, one of the hottest NYC-based directors of photography working today. Chen has previously lensed music videos for Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Q-Tip, The Roots, and many more. You might also recognize actress, Lauren Francesca (the unmistakably sexy blonde) as the star of the Lady Gaga video spoofs that have racked up millions of views on YouTube. Most of all, you’ll notice that bunch of simians, out of their minds with abandon. Beneath the suits, you’ll find the members of Julius C.

More about Julius C

See Julius C live this Friday June 25th at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC (196 Allen St.)

Before the writing and recording of Julius C’s upcoming album OK, OK., this band was already going bananas. The band’s core of vocalist/guitarist Jay Stolar, bassist Mike Tuccillo and Tuccillo’s childhood friend, keyboardist Jason Wexler had rapidly expanded to a group of ten, just as quickly burned through four drummers, and finally managed to top that off with a couple of painful personal break-ups that left the guys feeling empty, lost, and disconnected from the music they were playing.

Willing to give it one last try, the guys moved into a cheap house with a broken Jacuzzi in Newark, NJ with new drummer, John Adamski. By the end of the year, Stolar and Tuccillo had both written enough material to fill their own records. Returning to Tucclillo and Wexler’s hometown of Staten Island, Julius C spent the next six months consumed in writing, arranging, and producing OK, OK. Now, standing united and determined, Julius C is ready to share their sound with the world. No more imploding, only exploding (and chest-beating) from here.

More About GiTAr

Scheduled for release on June 8th, 2010 by Seeland Records, the label owned by legendary culture-jammers, Negativland, GiTAr’s “STUFFED” has the potential to make you more than you are without it. GiTAr members Ellipse Elkshow and I Cut People were raised in Evansville, Indiana, home to major polluters, factories, cancer statistics, pharmaceutical manufacturing and a test town for new products cooked up by various fast food giants.

In that cold war, post genocide, post slavery, post Vietnam climate of arrogance, ignorance and inter-cultural conflict, the Media (that’s YOU!) became the loudest voice on the planet. Television, movies, radio, theater, newspapers, magazines, books, records, CDs, billboards, followed by the internet, gave rise to a gruesome and unimaginably vast ocean of violently conflicting information, ideas and communications.

One dark day in 2006 something snapped and the two childhood friends put powdered sugar on their noses, grabbed a guitar and decided to begin the most important balls-out sonic and visual assault that Civilization has ever freaking encountered – under the guise of GiTAr, no less. Eventually they both left the death trap and moved to the West Coast, where they began collaborating on an endless barrage of visual, sonic and improvisational projects.

There is love and hate encapsulated in GiTAr’s work, as well as social satire and an astute condensation of the brutal irony of our social, political and physical existence. To be smarter than the Experts, hipper than the Hippest Hipster, fantastically famous, rolling in money and undeniably sextractive, obviously, you’ll need this album. “STUFFED,” by GiTAr; It comes in a compact disc, with FREE face-eating, mind-blowing artwork by GiTAr.

The Shimmies Press

The Shimmies are probably without question the most talented band I’ve seen in this part of the country.” – Bill Fishkin, Synthesis Magazine

The Shimmies’ songs are packed with a strong sense of atmosphere, layered with beautiful harmonies, piano and guitars that shift effortlessly from spacey passages to distorted riffing and solos.” – Landon Moblad, Chico News & Review

“Like many albums of our generation, To All Beloved Enemies is a throwback, not to a forgotten genre, but rather to a time when a musician wasn’t something just anyone could be, a time when pop music was written by a chosen few tortured ambassadors to the human condition.” – Craig Gordon, The Delta Mirror

+++

About The Shimmies

+++

Still maturing from a childhood project that combined brothers Sean and Jimmy Galloway’s first names, The Shimmies have created a self-appointed genre for themselves, which they lovingly refer to as “home school rock.” Much the way a home schooled child’s take on a book may have less to do with the collective opinion of their peers, so does The Shimmies’ take on pop music stand apart from the collective pretense of our generation.

Sean and Jimmy started out in the late 90’s as an acoustic two piece, and before that as kids trying to perfect difficult harmonies by panning Simon and Garfunkel’s Wednesday Morning 3AM on their small cassette deck boom box. They’ve since plugged in and added younger brother Stephen on bass and long time friend Jack Gingerich on drums.

The Shimmies’ music has come a long way since inception, but its defining characteristic remains angelic harmonies from the bands two front men, giving them a magical quality similar to that of The Avett Brothers or Fleet Foxes, with an overall sound that garners comparisons to the likes of Band of Horses, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros.

Presently, The Shimmies’ sights are set on sharing their music with a greater audience, with national release of To All Beloved Enemies along with an upcoming tour of the US in late 2010. While other bands look to the future or to a time before they were born for inspiration, The Shimmies continue to make their home school rock. Rather than steal from their parents music, they’ve updated the music they grew up with, adding a more contemporary anthemic quality to our favorite 90’s memories.

More about Jaques Labouchere:

They say great art reflects life and Jacques Labouchere’s new album is no exception – the formerly homeless bi-polar new-father-of-one’s collection of songs is firmly rooted in his own personal experience. Born in Sharon, Connecticut, Jacques began playing ukulele and guitar before hitting double digits. He was already playing bass in local bands at the age of 15 when he was kicked out of school after being ratted on by Donald Trump’s son for boozing in the school yard.

Abandoning the USA for London in his late teens, Jacques spent a few years squatting in Brixton, experimenting with “psychedelics and music” and busking on the streets. To quote Charles Dickens, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...,” as a mental breakdown led him back to his family in the US – and revealed a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder. Whatever - Jacques’ hunger for adventure saw him resume his journey despite his condition: Connecticut, Boston and Washington DC were all temporary homes until, chasing love across continents, the musician finally ended up in Gothenburg, Sweden.

When the relationship faded, Jacques found himself homeless - couch surfing on good days - but all the while busking for coins. Pretty much alone in a foreign country, it was his unique voice and way with a tune that proved to be his salvation: local Gothenberg musicians and artists welcomed his talent and, after making friends and making a living with his music, Jacques eventually settled down to make Sweden his home.

“Göteborg is the home I have always been looking for”, says Jacques. “Everyone you meet here is so supportive of one another.” Spurred on by his new life in a new country, a new love and a new baby daughter, Jacques has woven the ups and downs of his life into the very fabric of Bi-polar Baby Strollers. “My songs are about love, loss, loneliness, togetherness, family (daughter, sisters, friends), and the bi-polar disorder, which I have suffered or prospered (depends how you look at it) from since the age of 20”, he continues.

The organic sound of Bi-polar Baby Strollers echoes the street performances that were ultimately the making of his talent – an acoustic guitar and a strong voice – but it’s only when Jacques comes together with his band of collaborators that we clearly hear the influences behind the songs – Donovan, George Harrison, The Band, Dylan, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Wilco, The Magic Numbers and Ryan Adams are all in there somewhere. At times joyous, at times a passionate plea, Bi-polar Baby Strollers is an honest, vulnerable and emotional mirror to Jacques’ personal, Wildean journey. Listen, engage, enjoy.
